Effective degradation of synthetic micropollutants and real textile wastewater via a visible light-activated persulfate system using novel spinach leaf-derived biochar
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2024 Mar 11. doi: 10.1007/s11356-024-32829-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA novel biochar (BC), derived from spinach leaves, was utilized as an activator for persulfate (PS) in the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under visible light conditions. Thorough analyses were conducted to characterize the physical and chemical properties of the biochar. The (BC + light)/PS system exhibited superior MB degradation efficiency at 83.36%, surpassing the performance of (BC + light)/hydrogen peroxide and (BC + light)/peroxymonosulfate systems. The optimal conditions were ascertained through the implem...

Longevity spinach (Gynura procumbens) ameliorated oxidative stress and inflammatory mediators in cisplatin-induced organ dysfunction in rats: comprehensive in vivo and in silico studies
This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of Gynura procumbens (GP) leaf extract against cisplatin (CP)-induced hepatorenal complications in Wister albino rats. Additionally, it aims to detect pol-yphenolic compounds using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection (HPLC-DAD). The rats were treated intraperitoneally with CP (7.5mg/kg) to mediate hepatorenal damage. They were then treated with GP extract (75 and 150mg/kg, P.O.) for 7 consecutive days. CP-mediated hepatorenal biomarkers like alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, aspar-tate aminotransferase, creatinine and blood urea nitrog...

Multiphasic investigations imply transfer of orange-/red-pigmented strains of the bean pathogen Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens to a new species as C. aurantiacum sp. nov., elevation of the poinsettia pathogen C. flaccumfaciens pv. poinsettiae to the species level as C. Poinsettiae sp. nov., and synonymy of C. albidum with C. citreum
In this study, phenotypic features and DNA similarity indexes were investigated among all C. flaccumfaciens members. Results showed that the C. flaccumfaciens pv. poinsettiae strains causing bacterial canker of Euphorbia pulcherrima in the USA as well as the orange-/red-pigmented strains of C. flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens pathogenic on dry beans in Iran are too distinct from each other and from the type strain of the species to be considered members of C. flaccumfaciens. Hence, the latter two groups were elevated at the species level as C. poinsettiae sp. nov. (ATCC 9682T = CFBP 2403T = ICMP 2566T = LMG 3715T = NCPPB ...

137Cs contamination of Japanese mustard spinach by resuspended particles in areas with different contamination conditions
AbstractWe investigated cesium-137 (137Cs) transfer to Japanese mustard spinaches (spinach) due to resuspended particles across the multiple sites in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. At a site located in difficult-to-return zone,137Cs deposition in pots placed near the ground increased. However, there was no significant difference in the amount of137Cs in spinach placed near the ground and those placed far from the ground.137Cs adsorption to the spinach was less than 10% of the137Cs deposition at each study site. For future study, it is necessary to evaluate the effects of weather and growth conditions on137Cs absorption to th...

Genes, Vol. 15, Pages 172: A Genome-Wide Association Study Reveals the Genetic Mechanisms of Nutrient Accumulation in Spinach
In this study, we analyzed the content of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, oxalate, nitrate, crude fiber, soluble sugars, manganese, copper, and iron in 62 different spinach accessions. Additionally, 3,356,182 high-quality, single-nucleotide polymorphisms were found using resequencing and used in a genome-wide association study. A total of 2077 loci were discovered that significantly correlated with the concentrations of the nutritional elements. Data mining identified key genes in these intervals for four traits: chlorophyll, oxalate, soluble sugar, and Fe. Our study provides insights into the genetic architecture of nutrien...

Preparation and properties of antibacterial food ‐preservative paper incorporating ceramic pigments
This study was prepared the antibacterial food-preservative paper incorporating ceramic pigments. The composite papermaking pigment was prepared by coating silver onto red ceramic powder using the electroless plating method. The antibacterial food-preservative paper preserved the freshness of the spinach and was shown to inhibit the growth ofS.  aureus andE.  coli by>99%. AbstractAg@ceramic composite papermaking pigment was prepared by coating silver onto red ceramic powder using the electroless plating method. SEM and XRD showed that the ceramic pigments have a porous crystalline structure and that silver particles h...

Fates of attached E. coli o157:h7 on intact leaf surfaces revealed leafy green susceptibility
Food Microbiol. 2024 May;119:104432. doi: 10.1016/j.fm.2023.104432. Epub 2023 Nov 28.ABSTRACTLeafy greens, especially lettuce, are repeatedly linked to foodborne outbreaks. This paper studied the susceptibility of different leafy greens to human pathogens. Five commonly consumed leafy greens, including romaine lettuce, green-leaf lettuce, baby spinach, kale, and collard, were selected by their outbreak frequencies. The behavior of E. coli O157:H7 87-23 on intact leaf surfaces and in their lysates was investigated. Bacterial attachment was positively correlated with leaf surface roughness and affected by the epicuticular wa...
