A Review of Screeners to Identify Risk of Developmental Language Disorder
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings presented some DLD screeners that meet most standards and highlight numerous areas for improvement, including improving classification accuracy and clarifying follow-up instructions for children who are identified with DLD risk. Screening for DLD is critical to provide timely early identification, intervention, and classroom support, which in turn facilitates student outcomes.PMID:38324341 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-23-00286 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Examining resting state functional connectivity and frequency power analysis in adults who stutter compared to adults who do not stutter
ConclusionThe results highlight disrupted functional connectivity in AWS at resting state, particularly in speech-related and associated areas. Given the complex neurological basis of developmental stuttering, robust neural markers are closely linked to this phenomenon. These markers include imbalanced activity within brain regions associated with speech and motor functions, coupled with impaired functional connectivity between these regions. The cortico-basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical system governs the dynamic interplay between cortical regions, with SMA as a key cortical site. It is hypothesized that the aberrant resting...

Whole exome sequencing and polygenic assessment of a Swedish cohort with severe developmental language disorder
AbstractDevelopmental language disorder (DLD) overlaps clinically, genetically, and pathologically with other neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD), corroborating the concept of the NDD continuum. There is a lack of studies to understand the whole genetic spectrum in individuals with DLD. Previously, we recruited 61 probands with severe DLD from 59 families and examined 59 of them and their families using microarray genotyping with a 6.8% diagnostic yield. Herein, we investigated 53 of those probands using whole exome sequencing (WES). Additionally, we used polygenic risk scores (PRS) to understand the within family enrichmen...

Exploring Speech-Language Pathologists' Perception of and Individualized Education Program Goals for Vocabulary Intervention With School-Age Children With Language Disorders
CONCLUSIONS: School-based SLPs believe that vocabulary is important and have a strong understanding of the impact robust vocabulary instruction can have on reading and writing outcomes. SLPs in this sample had varying expectations regarding the way their instruction is implemented and generalized. Implications and limitations of these results are discussed.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.25077992.PMID:38295301 | DOI:10.1044/2023_LSHSS-23-00078 (Source: Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools)

Current practices of Portuguese speech-language pathologists with preschool-age children with pragmatic impairment: A cross-sectional survey
This study aims to investigate the practice patterns used by Portuguese speech-language pathologists (SLPs) with preschool-age children with pragmatic impairment and to identify the actual need(s) perceived by SLPs in this field. A total of 351 SLPs responded. The results reveal that 81.5 per cent of the respondents (n=286) reported working or had previously worked with preschool-age children with pragmatic impairment arising from autism spectrum disorder, developmental language disorder, or both. Considering the clinical practice, similarities and differences were found, many of which are due not to the inherent character...

Foxp2 deficiency impairs reproduction by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in zebrafish
Biol Reprod. 2024 Jan 30:ioae019. doi: 10.1093/biolre/ioae019. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFOXP2 was initially characterized as a transcription factor linked to speech and language disorders. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) reveals that Foxp2 is enriched in the gonadotrope cluster of the pituitary gland and colocalized with the hormones LHB and FSHB in chickens and mice, implying that FOXP2 might be associated with reproduction in vertebrates. Herein, we investigated the roles of foxp2 in reproduction in a Foxp2-deficient zebrafish model. The results indicated that the loss of Foxp2 inhibits courtship behavior in ...

Long-term medication for ADHD (LMA) trial: 2-year prospective observational study in children and adolescents. Core symptoms, daily functioning, and comorbidity outcomes
Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci. 2024 Jan 27. doi: 10.1007/s00406-023-01744-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMore knowledge is needed about long-term ADHD medication and symptom, daily functioning, comorbidity, and tolerability outcomes. This "Long-term Medication for ADHD (LMA) trial" was a prospective observational 2-year trial in children and adolescents aged 6-18 years (extension of 1-year trial). Participants met criteria for DSM-5 ADHD (inattentive or combined), with complex comorbidities; autism spectrum disorder (31%), autistic traits (24%), oppositional symptoms (59%), anxiety (32%), dyslexia/language disorder (...

Developmental language disorder and neurodiversity: Surfacing contradictions, tensions and unanswered questions
CONCLUSIONS: DLD should be considered from a neurodiversity-informed perspective, and it is our hope that this will lead to neurodiversity-affirming practice that will afford young people with DLD better understanding from members of the public and the professionals who work with them. Further work is needed to better support children, young people and adults with DLD to have a voice in the neurodiversity movement.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject Neurodiversity approaches are increasingly being taken up in research and practice in relation to autism, meaning that our understanding of autism and ho...

Knowledge and Perspectives of Developmental Language Disorders: The Pilot Development of a Survey of Professionals Working in Law Enforcement
CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study demonstrates a need for collaboration between speech-language pathologists and law enforcement professionals and provides data for a survey that could be used across professional groups in the justice system to measure knowledge and perspectives of DLDs. This work represents an initial step in an iterative process of survey development for law enforcement professionals.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.25033718.PMID:38266216 | DOI:10.1044/2023_AJSLP-22-00374 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)
