A developmental account of the role of sequential dependencies in typical and atypical language learners
Cogn Neuropsychol. 2023 Nov 14:1-22. doi: 10.1080/02643294.2023.2275837. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Gerken lab has shown that infants are able to learn sound patterns that obligate local sequential dependencies that are no longer readily accessible to adults. The Goffman lab has shown that children with developmental language disorder (DLD) exhibit deficits in learning sequential dependencies that influence the acquisition of words and grammar, as well as other types of domain general sequences. Thus, DLD appears to be an impaired ability to detect and deploy sequential dependencies over multiple domains. We meld th...

Prevalence, comorbidities, and profiles of neurodevelopmental disorders according to the DSM-5-TR in children aged 6  years old in a European region
ConclusionIn disadvantaged contexts, there was a higher prevalence of NDDs and comorbidities, unless the disorder was extreme, in which case only the NDD manifestations were presented. A significant proportion of the sample had not been previously diagnosed (88.6%); therefore, early detection programs are recommended to identify warning signs and develop policies that help and support the most disadvantaged sectors of the population. Improving the Efficiency of Dysarthria Voice Conversion System Based on Data Augmentation
This study aims to propose a data augmentation-based voice conversion (VC) system to reduce the recording burden on the speaker. We propose dysarthria voice conversion 3.1 (DVC 3.1) based on a data augmentation approach, including text-to-speech and StarGAN-VC architecture, to synthesize a large target and patient-like corpus to lower the burden of recording. An objective evaluation metric of the Google automatic speech recognition (Google ASR) system and a listening test were used to demonstrate the speech intelligibility benefits of DVC 3.1 under free-talk conditions. The DVC system without data augmentation (DVC 3.0) wa...

Communication in Daily Life of Children With Developmental Language Disorder: Parents' and Teachers' Perspectives
CONCLUSIONS: The results confirm that children with DLD face significant challenges in a variety of communicative situations. We found indications that children with receptive-expressive disorder experience more severe limitations than children with expressive disorder. The involvement of parents and teachers in evaluating a child's communicative ability provides valuable and clinically relevant information.PMID:37934883 | DOI:10.1044/2023_LSHSS-23-00051 (Source: Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools)

A preliminary study of the effects of stimulant medications on estimates of psycholinguistic abilities for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder
Clin Linguist Phon. 2023 Oct 31:1-21. doi: 10.1080/02699206.2023.2273750. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUnderlying deficits in inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity might contribute to suboptimal test-taking behaviours during language assessments that can lead to diagnostic errors. Considerations of potential medication effects on estimates of children's nonword repetition, sentence recall, tense-marking, and narrative abilities are warranted given long-standing enthusiasm for these indices to serve as clinical markers for developmental language disorder (DLD). A battery consisting of 1 nonverbal, 1 reading, and 6...
