Identification and characterization of an ectophosphatase activity involved in Acanthamoeba castellanii adhesion to host cells
Eur J Protistol. 2023 Oct 13;91:126026. doi: 10.1016/j.ejop.2023.126026. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcanthamoeba castellanii is a free-living amoeba and an opportunistic pathogen for humans that can cause encephalitis and, more commonly, Acanthamoeba keratitis. During its life cycle, A. castellanii may present as proliferative and infective trophozoites or resistant cysts. The adhesion of trophozoites to host cells is a key first step in the pathogenesis of infection. A major virulence protein of Acanthamoeba is a mannose-binding protein (MBP) that mediates the adhesion of amoebae to cell surfaces. Ectophosphatases are ...

Multidisciplinary evaluation of the remineralization potential of three fluoride-based toothpastes on natural white spot lesions
ConclusionsAll the tested dentifrices have shown to remineralize the WSLs.  SF and HAF have comparable capability in hardness recovery and crystallinity; however, SF shows the best remineralizing potential according to both micromorphological and chemical analyses.Clinical relevanceThe daily use of toothpastes containing hydroxyapatite partially replaced with fluoride, sodium monofluorophosphate with arginine and sodium fluoride toothpaste associated with enzymes represents a preventive, therapeutic, effective, and non-invasive tool for remineralize  WSLs. Effectiveness of silver diamine fluoride versus sodium fluoride varnish combined with mother ’s motivational interviewing for arresting early childhood caries: a randomized clinical trial
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) has gained attention as one of the minimally invasive modalities to manage ECC although it causes black staining of treated carious lesions. A possible affordable alternative may ... (Source: BMC Oral Health)

A Novel Two-Domain Laccase with Middle Redox Potential: Physicochemical and Structural Properties
AbstractThe gene for a previously unexplored two-domain laccase was identified in the genome of actinobacteriumStreptomyces carpinensis VKM Ac-1300. The two-domain laccase, named ScaSL, was produced in a heterologous expression system (Escherichia coli strain M15 [pREP4]). The enzyme was purified to homogeneity using affinity chromatography. ScaSL laccase, like most two-domain laccases, exhibited activity in the homotrimer form. However, unlike the most two-domain laccases, it was also active in multimeric forms. The enzyme exhibited maximum activity at 80 °C and was thermally stable. Half-inactivation time of ScaSL at 80...

Neuroligin-3 activates Akt-dependent Nrf2 cascade to protect osteoblasts from oxidative stress
Free Radic Biol Med. 2023 Sep 27:S0891-5849(23)00657-3. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2023.09.032. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExcessive oxidative stress will cause significant injury to osteoblasts, serving as one major pathological mechanism of osteoporosis. Neuroligin-3 (NLGN3) is a postsynaptic cell adhesion protein and is expressed in the bone. We here explored its potential activity against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative injury in cultured osteoblasts. In primary murine and human osteoblasts, NLGN3 stimulation dose-dependently induced Akt, Erk1/2 and S6K activation. NLGN3 pretreatment ameliorated H2O2-in...

Role of 18F-NaF PET/CT in bone metastases
Q J Nucl Med Mol Imaging. 2023 Sep 26. doi: 10.23736/S1824-4785.23.03534-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe use of 18F sodium fluoride (18F-NaF) in positron emission tomography (PET/CT) is increasing. This resurgence of an old tracer has been driven by several factors, including its superior diagnostic performance over standard 99mTc-based bone scintigraphy (BS), availability of PET/CT imaging systems, a shortened examination time and an increase in the number of regional commercial PET radiotracer distribution. In this special article, we aimed to highlight the current place of the 18F-NaF PET/CT in the imaging of bone ...
