How can you be kinder to yourself?
I'm three clerkships into third year and I'm realizing that whenever I make a mistake or fall short of my goals, I end up being overly self-critical and mull over the mistake in my mind over and over again to the point where it's affecting my sleep. A friend told me that I need to be kinder to myself. Although I have insight regarding my tendency to self-flagellate, turning the self criticism off has been challenging, particularly since this tendency is what allowed me to succeed in high... So here comes the limbo period...
I took the Step 3 this past week, and now that I've had a good rest... all the mistakes I made on the exam naturally have come flooding to me. Absurd things like recognizing the answer as the ulnar nerve and choosing lateral epicondyle. What was I thinking? Stress leading to lack of sleep I imagine. Or stopping Verapamil on a diabetic patient for Metoprolol? WHY DIDN't I START HER ON LISINOPRIL. I just can't believe how on every step, I always have this happen. Walk out of the Step, and... Psychiatrists in Sleep
I am a psychiatrist. Last year I got trained in sleep medicine at a fairly reputable program however it has been very difficult to find a job in sleep medicine. Although finding a job in psychiatry has been easy, it is frustrating that even places that do sleep will not let me do it because im a psychiatrist. They only want pulmonologists and sometimes neurologists. Most arent even aware psychiatrists could do sleep medicine. I would love to hear other people's experiences on this... Stahl's is putting me to sleep!
Reading Essentials and I am struggling getting through it. Let me rephrase that: I'm struggling getting through the first few chapters. I've heard folks rave about Stahl's but I honestly do not share the sentiment and I'm about ready to pull the ripcord and bail on this venture. Thoughts? Suggestions? Thanks folks. Attendings, Residents, Remember the step exams? Do you feel like you study just as much now?
My wife just finished her step 2, and she was all gung-ho about rads. She enjoyed her rotations, she loves imaging, but now that she is burnt out from studying, she is absolutely dreading having to study the way she did these past 2 months (she had an 8-5 rotation, came home, studied until 10, went to sleep, rinse and repeat). Is it possible to go to a good program where the didactics and attendings are helpful enough that when you get home, you can spend some time with the kids? So,... Social Anxiety and awkwardness making MS3 a nightmare?
I am half way through my surgery rotation and I am struggling like hell. I am the student who is usually quiet, and fumbles with instruments. My nervousness for the next day makes it impossible for me to study or sleep at a decent time and I end up looking even dumber. I constantly drink alcohol almost every night just to make these feelings go away. I am OKAY at communicating, I just tend to be very monotone and kind of dry, and I just get really quiet and stutter my words in group... Social Anxiety and awkwardness making MS3 a nightmare? Why are 24 hr shifts a thing?
Studies have shown that 24 hrs with no sleep is equivalent to having a mental state of a BAC of 0.1. Would you want a drunk doctor managing your care? The military insists its soldiers get enough sleep when possible, so that they don't make stupid decisions. Why is the medical community the only group that is retarded about this. Do the benefits of continuity of care really outweigh the costs? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Mediocre/poor evaluations in rotations I don't care about....
long story short, I hate surgery and I'm about to start the rotation. they work too much, sleep too little and have no time to do anything. I have zero interest in becoming a surgeon or even learning anything about it so from that standpoint, I'm not trying to go above and beyond and get a good evaluation or anything like that cus I don't give 2 sh**s about this specialty. Otoh I loved my FM rotation....it was so easy, like 9-5 pm with 1.5 hr long lunch breaks, no weekends, no nights etc.... Mediocre/poor evaluations in rotations I don't care about.... How are you guys studying?
Hey guys, fellow D1 here. Just wanted to see how everyone is studying. Our school has mandatory attendance for lectures and we have a small class (around 45) so it's not hard for the professors to notice if you are not there. Some care, some don't. We usually go 8-5pm for lecture and have at least two tests a week and a final the following week or so. Just doesn't leave a lot of time to study during the day, even if you sleep at 10:30 - 11pm. I've found myself studying till 10 and waking up... How are you guys studying? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

what's your morning routine?
Roll out of bed and go to work (maximize sleep) vs wake up early/eat breakfast/read/coffee/ect...? I alternate between the two and curious what others are doing. What makes you perform the best at work. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
