Spectrum of sleep-disordered breathing and quality of sleep in adolescent and adult patients with spinal muscular atrophy
In conclusion, sleep-disordered breathing is common even among adult patients with spinal muscular atrophy type 2 and 3, and may show either obstructive or different types on non-obstructive features. A worse respiratory muscle function is associated to non-obstructive sleep-disordered breathing and poorer sleep quality. Sleep quality should receive greater attention especially in patients with spinal muscular atrophy type 2, who have a poorer respiratory muscle function, as it could affect their quality of life.PMID:38654474 | DOI:10.1111/jsr.14222 (Source: Journal of Sleep Research)

Impact of on-call shifts on working memory and the role of burnout, sleep, and mental well-being in trainee physicians
CONCLUSION: Working more on-call shifts is associated with compromised WM. Trainee physicians who experienced more depressive symptoms and burnout had worse WM.PMID:38656827 | DOI:10.1080/00325481.2024.2347195 (Source: Postgraduate Medicine)

Developmental links between ethnic and racial discrimination and sleep
AbstractA robust literature is developing around how the stress of discrimination is implicated in individual- and group-level sleep disturbances, and how these disturbances contribute to the development of population-level sleep disparities over time. Although discrimination can be based on many individual and intersecting biases, like gender, sexuality, socioeconomic status, and education, in this article, we focus on discrimination rooted in ethnicity and race because of the well-founded documentation of disparities in sleep by race. Focusing primarily on adolescence and young adulthood, we integrate research linking et...

Clinical and molecular outcomes from the 5-Year natural history study of SSADH Deficiency, a model metabolic neurodevelopmental disorder
ConclusionsFindings from the SSADHD Natural History Study converge with iPSC and animal model work focused on a common disorder within our IDDRC, deepening our knowledge of the pathophysiology and longitudinal clinical course of a complex neurodevelopmental disorder. This further enables the identification of biomarkers and changes throughout development that will be essential for upcoming targeted trials of enzyme replacement and gene therapy. The relationship between posttonsillectomy bleeding to hemogram and coagulation parameters
ConclusionsAge, high WBC and neutrophil levels were determined as possible risk factors for PTB. Seasonal and gender distribution, aPTT and INR values were similar in the two groups. In order to prevent and predict bleeding, detailed infection investigation should be performed and the risk of bleeding should be considered to increase with increasing age. Reliability and validity of rapid assessment tools for measuring 24-hour movement behaviours in children aged 0-5 years: the Movement Behaviour Questionnaire Baby (MBQ-B) and child (MBQ-C)
CONCLUSIONS: The MBQ-B and MBQ-C are valid and reliable rapid assessment tools for assessing 24-hour movement behaviours in infants, toddlers, and pre-schoolers. Both the open- and closed-ended versions of the MBQ are suitable for research conducted for policy and practice purposes, including the evaluation of scaled-up early obesity prevention programs.PMID:38654342 | DOI:10.1186/s12966-024-01596-5 (Source: Health Physics)

Sleep quality during and after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (COVID-19) lockdowns in the UK: Results from the SleepQuest study
J Sleep Res. 2024 Apr 23:e14205. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14205. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSleep is fundamental to health. The aim of this study was to analyse and determine factors predicting sleep quality during and after national lockdowns due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (COVID-19) in the UK. A longitudinal online survey-based study (SleepQuest) involving UK adults was administered in Spring 2020, Winter 2020, and Winter 2022 including questionnaires probing sleep quality, depression, anxiety, beliefs about sleep, demographics, COVID-19 status, and exercise. The primary outcome was sleep quality (Pitt...

A perspective on automated rapid eye movement sleep assessment
J Sleep Res. 2024 Apr 23:e14223. doi: 10.1111/jsr.14223. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRapid eye movement sleep is associated with distinct changes in various biomedical signals that can be easily captured during sleep, lending themselves to automated sleep staging using machine learning systems. Here, we provide a perspective on the critical characteristics of biomedical signals associated with rapid eye movement sleep and how they can be exploited for automated sleep assessment. We summarise key historical developments in automated sleep staging systems, having now achieved classification accuracy on par with human exper...

Analyzing the Quality of Life in Individuals with Fragile X Syndrome in Relation to Sleep and Mental Health
This study included 119 individuals with Fragile X Syndrome who were given different cognitive examinations by a neuropsychologist or by parent-proxy questionnaires. This study focused on the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQoL), the Anxiety, Depression and Mood Scale (ADAMS), the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), but did include other cognitive tests (Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales, Nonverbal IQ, Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule). We identified significant associations between decreases in emotional, social and school domains of PedsQoL and the ADAMS subtests of Generalized Anxiety, Manic/Hy...

The Prevalence of Depression and Anxiety and Its Association with Sleep Quality in the First-Year Medical Science Students
CONCLUSION: Noticeable proportion of freshmen students suffer from depression and anxiety; in line with such a critical issue, our study found that depression and anxiety had a statistical association with sleep quality in study population. From this respect, it seems that providing essential interventions and psychological counseling services could be constructive for the freshmen medical students.PMID:38651016 | PMC:PMC11035008 | DOI:10.1155/2024/7102081 (Source: Depression Research and Treatment)
