Indiana University (Indy) Residency Reviews
I really don't even know where to begin talking about this place. I had heard great things about IU but to visit it in person was like seeing my first NFL hero in person when I was a kid....much bigger and better than I had dreamed. I am not going to have time to elaborate much right not because I have to get to sleep for my next interview in the morning. I really thought I had seen some "A list" programs already, but this place would have to be classified in the "AAA" category. The... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Yet another lost MS3 - help me choose a specialty
Tlr: I like procedures/surgery + hate clinic, but want balance/sleep/avg grades I am yet another M3 who is lost on what specialty to apply to. Any and all advice would be appreciated, because the more I think about what to pursue, the more I don't know what to do. Surgical vs. non-Surgical: I am content with surgical procedures but I prefer shorter 1-2 hr cases. The more I'm in the OR the more I feel like doing what the surgeon is doing. The main drawback is an unbalanced lifestyle... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Working nights as a hospitalist
Is it possible to negotiate a contract as a hospitalist where you don't have to work any night shifts? I'm willing to work evenings and weekends. I have a health issue where I have trouble inverting my sleep cycle. And how does this differ between academics and private practice? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Story is good but GPA is not
So this is going to be a story I am sure you've seen before. (It'll help me sleep at night knowing I got to ask myself, so humor me) So long story short, I am 27-29, and a software engineer for one of the top 3 defense contractors in the United States. I have been working here for almost a year now. I was originally going to get my masters in management and I recently just switched to an official pre-med postbaccalaureate certificate, but I don't think it offers med school interviews like... Oral surgeons, how much/often do you take call after residency and does it significantly interfere with your lives outside of work?
Until recently, I was under the impression that the average oral surgeon could expect to take as much call as any other surgeon after residency (so much that it becomes an impediment to having a family, pursuing projects outside of work, getting enough sleep). I found out that while they almost always have to take call if they desire hospital privileges and board certification, it’s supposedly not enough to prevent them from having the relatively predictable schedule associated with other... Risperdal withdrawal
I have a client with bipolar 1 disorder who has taken 6mg of risperdal daily for years. The medication has worked well for her but led to an 80 pound weight gain. The client has been working with weight management and taking Wegovy for 5 months with no weight loss at all. She quit her risperdal cold Turkey more than a week ago. Today, I noticed irritability and restlessness. The client has started having sleep difficulties. I reflected my observations today and expressed concerns for her... Sleep Medicine as subspecialty of EM
I'm working on petitioning ABEM to add Sleep as a subspecialty of EM so ABEM docs can pursue Sleep. I think it's a natural fit for us and we have lots to offer the field, from circadian rhythm research to airway issues. What I've done: -I'm collecting names of ABEM docs interested in Sleep, -I have sent out emails to ACEP, EMRA, SAEM, and AAEM asking if I can do a SurveyMonkey of their members for interest in Sleep. Literally no one has responded. -I am MEETING WITH THE ABEM LEGISLATIVE... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
