Characterizing Trends in Diagnosis and Management of Sinusitis in a Large Health Care System: From Primary Care to Otolaryngology
CONCLUSIONS: Over half of the patients referred to an otolaryngology practice from primary care for sinusitis did not receive a diagnosis of sinusitis from an otolaryngology practice. Further research should investigate implications for increased healthcare costs and inappropriate prescription trends associated with the management of sinusitis.PMID:38345045 | DOI:10.1177/00034894241230365 (Source: The Annals of Otology, Rhinology, and Laryngology)

Pediatric chronic rhinosinusitis
ConclusionsPCRS is very common in children causing poor QOL for these children. Medical management remains the main stay of treatment with attention to management of co-morbidities that may contribute to the disease severity. Making the correct diagnosis will help with the choice of surgical intervention if medical management fails. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

The Surprising Effect of Priming on SNOT-22 Results
CONCLUSIONS: Priming impacts how patient's perceive their chronic rhinosinusitis as determined by the SNOT-22. It is imperative that the rhinologist understand this when using this instrument in research applications and in clinical decision-making for patients.PMID:38332587 | DOI:10.1177/19458924241229160 (Source: American Journal of Rhinology and Allergy)

Bilateral cavernous sinus and ophthalmic vein thrombosis secondary to Trueperella pyogenes rhinosinusitis
AbstractOphthalmic vein thrombosis is a severe clinical entity with proptosis, eyelid swelling, orbital pain and reduction of visual acuity; its incidence is rare with 3 –4 cases /million /year. Clinical manifestations result from venous congestion caused by septic (orbital cellulitis) or aseptic aetiologies (coagulopathies, trauma) and in some cases it could be associated with cavernous sinus thrombosis. In this paper, we describe a case report unique in the lite rature, of bilateral cavernous sinus and ophthalmic veins thrombosis due to both septic and aseptic causes characterized by unilateral sphenoid sinusitis susta...

Increased IgG4 Levels Are Associated with Severe Asthma and Chronic Sinusitis in an Inner City Population with Persistent Eosinophilia
Persistent eosinophilia (PE) is a common problem which is frequently not adequately evaluated. IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is one of the causes of PE. We evaluated characteristics of patients with elevated IgG4 levels in an inner-city Allergy Clinic population with PE. (Source: Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology)

Central Compartment Atopic Disease in The Bronx Population
Central compartment atopic disease (CCAD) is a novel subset of chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), characterized by polypoid changes in the central areas of the nose (ethmoid cells, turbinates, medial or inferior walls of the paranasal sinuses). This phenotype is understudied in the US. We sought to characterize CCAD within the unique Bronx population. (Source: Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology)

Dupilumab, Immune Surveillance And Malignancy: What Does The Literature Reveal?
Dupilumab is an IgG4-monoclonal antibody binding IL-4 receptor alpha, which inhibits downstream IL-4 and IL-13 signaling via JAK-STAT. Modulation of this pathway has been linked to the progression of solid and hematological malignancy. Widely used in sinusitis, asthma and eczema, the influence of dupilumab on oncogenic potential is unclear. The reports of various malignancies developing after dupilumab use are concerning and warrant investigation. (Source: Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology)

The Variants of Frontal Recess and Its Effect in the Development and Prevalence of Frontal Sinusitis in Patients in a Tertiary Care Hospital: A Retrospective Observational Study
This study included a total of 200 participants with a mean age was 43.38  years (± 10.69). There was 146 (73%) male and 54 (27%) female were in the study. Type I frontal recess in 50 (25%), type II in 82 (41%), type III in 24 (12%) and type IV in 18 (9%) patients. The association of age (P = 0.141) and gender (P = 0.345) with frontal sinusitis was not significant. The statistical association between type of frontal recess and frontal sinusitis was statistically not significant. The association between age and the type of frontal recess was found to be statistically significant by Fischer’s exact test withP v...

A Potential Role for the Receptor for Advanced Glycation End-Products (RAGE) in the Development of Secondhand Smoke-Induced Chronic Sinusitis
Curr Issues Mol Biol. 2024 Jan 13;46(1):729-740. doi: 10.3390/cimb46010047.ABSTRACTChronic sinusitis (CS) is characterized by sinonasal inflammation, mucus overproduction, and edematous mucosal tissue. CS impacts one in seven adults and estimates suggest up to 15% of the general U.S. population may be affected. This research sought to assess a potential role for receptors for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE), an inflammatory receptor expressed in tissues exposed to secondhand smoke (SHS). Human sinus tissue sections were stained for RAGE and S100s, common RAGE ligands. Wild-type mice and mice that over-express RAGE i...
