Challenges in Diagnosing and Treating Subperiosteal Orbital Hematoma Secondary to Sinusitis: A Case
Ear Nose Throat J. 2024 Apr 18:1455613241247764. doi: 10.1177/01455613241247764. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSubperiosteal orbital hematoma secondary to sinusitis is rare. Thus far, 19 cases of this disease have been reported, of which none involved postoperative skin anesthesia in the region innervated by the supraorbital nerve. In this article, for the first time we report a case of subperiosteal orbital hematoma secondary to sinusitis with skin anesthesia in the area innervated by the supraorbital nerve after surgery.PMID:38634313 | DOI:10.1177/01455613241247764 (Source: Ear, Nose and Throat Journal)

COVID-19 presenting with nystagmus
Arch Soc Esp Oftalmol. 2021 Apr;96(4):224-226. doi: 10.1016/j.oftal.2020.09.008. Epub 2020 Nov 6.ABSTRACTThis case reports a 20-year-old female patient who was in northern Italy when the state of emergency was declared on the 31st of January 2020, developing 15 days after return to Spain upper respiratory symptoms characterized by fever, headache and anosmia that was treated as sinusitis. Three weeks later presented with dizziness and an intermittent horizontal nystagmus with rotatory component. Otorhinolaryngology and neurological examination including MRI were normal. COVID-19 IgG antibodies where positive. In the contex...

Measuring outcomes when odontogenic sinusitis is treated with endoscopic sinus surgery: A systematic review
ConclusionReported outcome measures were very heterogeneous. In consideration of the weak evidence base for the role of ESS in ODS management, more consistent measurement and reporting of patient symptoms, clinical and radiological signs with endoscopic findings is recommended to enable meta-analysis. Demographic characteristics and risk factors for invasive fungal sinusitis in the context of COVID-19: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Invasive fungal sinusitis (IFS) is a rare, life-threatening, and the most aggressive form of fungal infection. It is characterized by extensive tissue necrosis through vascular invasion and thrombosis, following by rapid progression and invasion into the orbit and brain from the nasal and sinus mucosa [1]. The leading pathogens are Aspergillus and mucor [2]. If not detected and treated early, the condition rapidly deteriorates, with the mortality rates as high as 50% to 80% due to intracranial extension, orbital involvement, and irreversible immunosuppression [3]. Misdiagnosis of lymphoma as vasculitis: A case report
This article describes a patient with NKTCL misdiagnosed as vasculitis who presented with sinusitis, abdominal pain, anorexia, and lung shadows, and also presented with eosinophilia, which was misdiagnosed as eosinophilic granuloma. The article describes the clinical features, diagnostic methods and differential diagnosis of lymphoma and highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in accurate diagnosis and treatment. AbstractNK/T-cell lymphoma (NKTCL) is a highly aggressive malignant tumour with a very poor prognosis, which often poses diagnostic difficulties due to the non-specificity of its clinical present...

Acute invasive fungal sinusitis with orbital tip syndrome in patients on long-term use of ruxolitinib: a  case report
ConclusionOne of the bases for the occurrence of invasive fungal sinusitis may be the patient ’s long-term use of ruxolitinib for essential thrombocythemia. Some patients with invasive fungal sinuses have atypical nasal symptoms and are referred to the corresponding departments with eye and headache as the first symptoms. It is suggested that enhanced magnetic resonance imaging should be p erformed at an early stage. Surgical treatment in combination with antifungal and enhanced immunotherapy can effectively prevent the spread of infection and reduce the risk of death. (Source: Journal of Medical Case Reports)

Fungal Sensitization and Human Allergic Disease
AbstractPurpose of the ReviewFungal sensitizations have been associated with hypersensitivity reactions with variable levels of evidence available to link types of fungi with human disease. We conducted systematic reviews of the literature to identify the strength of evidence linking lesser-studied fungi for which there are commercially available extracts to identify populations in which they were useful in clinical practice.Recent FindingsExcluding five fungi for which hundreds of articles were identified, there are 54 articles on the remaining fungi with clinical data. For 12 of the fungi, the prevalence of fungal sensit...

Ameloblastic Carcinoma of the Maxilla With Uncommon Sinus Manifestations
We present a unique case of AC in a 70-year-old male, retired dry cleaner, with symptoms initially suggestive of chronic allergic rhinitis and recurrent acute sinusitis with asymmetric facial edema and paresthesia. Detailed evaluation revealed a prominent mass in the right maxillary sinus with extensive cortical destruction. Pathological assessment post-right maxillectomy identified a high-grade AC with malignant spindle cell transformation. The patient underwent subsequent interventions, including neck dissection and radiation therapy. Twelve months post-presentation, the patient was recovering appropriately without evide...

Surgical Strategy on Lung Transplantation for Kartagener ’s Syndrome
Introduction: Kartagener ’s syndrome is a rare, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the triad of situs inversus, bronchiectasis and sinusitis. There are some surgical challenges in lung transplantation for Kartagener’s syndrome due to situs inversus. First, dextrocardia can compress the implanted right lung. F urthermore, the reversed hilum structures cause technical difficulties in anastomoses of bronchus and pulmonary vessels. Herein, we present our surgical strategy used in lung transplantation for Kartagener’s syndrome. (Source: The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation)

Factors Impacting Outcome and Prognosis of Invasive Fungal Sinusitis: How Vital is Iron Metabolism?
We examined the correlations between iron metabolism parameters and the course of invasive fungal sinusitis. Patients with invasive fungal sinusitis were enrolled. Serum iron and ferritin levels, total iron-binding capacity, and transferrin saturation were measured at the initiation of treatment. Patients were followed for 6  months, and the clinical course was categorised as improvement or worsening/death. A total of 35 patients were enrolled. The average ferritin levels in mucormycosis patients was 944.9 ng/ml, versus 110.7 ng/ml for aspergillosis patients. Iron levels were significantly lower in mucormycosis than in ...

Combined allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis: A case report and literature review
Respir Med Case Rep. 2024 Mar 19;48:102012. doi: 10.1016/j.rmcr.2024.102012. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTA 27-year-old female visited our hospital with a history of asthma, peripheral blood eosinophilia, increased total IgE, Aspergillus fumigatus specific IgE, reversible mild bronchiectasis, sinusitis, bronchial mucus plugs and cultivation of Aspergillus from BALF. Glucocorticoids therapy is effective. These results met the diagnostic criteria for both allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPM) and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA). Special attention should be paid to the possibility of both diseases co...
