Salmonella in Chicken and Pork Meat as a Likely Major Contributor to Foodborne Illness in Peru
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2024 May 14:tpmd230575. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0575. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNontyphoidal Salmonella is one of the major causes of self-limiting diarrheal disease and the most common foodborne pathogen worldwide. It is an important contributor to the burden of foodborne illness in South America, including Peru, where chicken and pork are important vehicles for Salmonella infection. Salmonella infections are underreported, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where concerted action tackling Salmonella along the chicken and pork chains, from primary production to retail, is urgently needed...

GSE256211 Integrated OMICs approach reveals energy metabolism pathway is vital for Salmonella Pullorum survival within the egg white
Contributors : Xiamei Kang ; Hongli An ; Baikui Wang ; Min YueSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar PullorumPurpose: To elucidate the survival strategies in egg white of Salmonella Pullorum, a host-restricted pathogen with vertical transmission capability. Methods: The logarithmic-phase wild-type and Δfim mutant strains were inoculated into LB medium and egg white (final concentration 80%) and statically cultured at 42°C for 6 hours. RNA samples were then extracted for sequencing. Three biological replicates were carried out per sample. ...

PEG modification increases thermostability and inhibitor resistance of Bst DNA polymerase
This study explored the PEGylation of Bst DNA polymerase, determining optimal modification reaction conditions. In comparison to the unmodified wild-type counterpart, the modified Bst DNA polymerase exhibited significantly improved of activity, thermal stability and inhibitor tolerance during loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). When applied for the detection of Salmonella in crude samples, the modified enzyme demonstrated a notably accelerated reaction rate. Therefore, PEGylation emerges as a viable strategy for refining DNA polymerases, helping in the development of novel molecular diagnostic reagents.PMID:3873...

ICP-MS based detection method combined with Au NP and Ag NP labeling for bacteremia diagnosis
Anal Biochem. 2024 May 7:115559. doi: 10.1016/j.ab.2024.115559. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBacteremia, as a serious infectious disease, has an increasing incidence and a high mortality rate. Early diagnosis and early treatment are crucial for improving the cure rate. In this work, we proposed an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)-based detection method combined with gold nanoparticle (Au NP) and silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) labeling for the simultaneous detection of Salmonella and Escherichia coli (E. coli O157:H7) in human blood samples. Salmonella and E. coli O157:H7 were captured by magnetic beads c...

Accumulation of resistance genes in < em > Salmonella < /em > Typhimurium transmitted between poultry and dairy farms increases the risk to public health
Appl Environ Microbiol. 2024 May 9:e0229723. doi: 10.1128/aem.02297-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSalmonella Typhimurium is a zoonotic pathogen that poses a major threat to public health. This generalist serotype can be found in many hosts and the environment where varying selection pressures may result in the accumulation of antimicrobial resistance determinants. However, the transmission of this serotype between food-producing hosts, specifically between poultry layer flocks and nearby dairy herds, was never demonstrated. We investigated an outbreak at a dairy in Israel to determine the role of nearby poultry houses ...

Antimicrobial activity of chitosan- edible films containing a combination of carvacrol and rosemary nano-emulsion against Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes for ground meat
Int J Food Microbiol. 2024 Apr 20;418:110713. doi: 10.1016/j.ijfoodmicro.2024.110713. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis research aimed to assess the potential of active food packaging as an innovative approach to enhance the quality of fresh food products. Specifically, our focus was on developing chitosan edible films combined with rosemary nanoemulsion (Ch-RNE) and carvacrol nano-emulsion (Ch-CNE) as effective antibacterial food packaging solutions. The efficacy of these films against artificially inoculated L. monocytogenes (NCTC 13372\ ATCC® 7644) as a Gram-positive bacterium, and S. enterica serovar Typhimurium (ATC...
