A Blood Filter Fights Deadly Inflammatory Response
A new blood filtration technology may prove to be life-saving for patients whose normally healthy inflammatory response to injury or illness has gone into overdrive, resulting in fatally high levels of cytokines in their blood. In an interview with MD+DI, Dr. Phillip Chan, MD, PhD, CEO of CytoSorbents Corp., explained that inflammation, and the production of substances called cytokines that drive inflammation, are the body’s natural response to heal injury or infection. But sometimes, the inflammatory response is so severe in such conditions as sepsis and infection, burn injuries, trauma, pancreatitis, li...

Long-Term Single Centre Outcomes of Patients with Chronic Renal Dialysis Undergoing Cardiac Surgery
CONCLUSIONSCardiac surgery in DD-CRF patients is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Interestingly, overall mortality was mainly none cardiac-related, where elderly patients or those presented with CHF had the worst life expectancy. However, subsequent kidney transplantation positively impact long-term survival in such patients.

Neurological Involvement in Primary Systemic Vasculitis
Conclusion Neurological involvement is a common complication of PSV (Table 1), and neurologists play an important role in the identification and diagnosis of PSV patients with otherwise unexplained neurological symptoms as their chief complaint. This article summarizes the neurological manifestations of PSV and hopes to improve neuroscientists' understanding of this broad range of diseases. TABLE 1 Table 1. Common CNS and PNS involvements of primary systemic vasculitis. Author Contributions SZ conceived the article and wrote the manuscript. DY and GT reviewed and edited the manuscript. All authors ...

Etiology and Outcomes of Thrombotic Microangiopathies.
CONCLUSIONS: Secondary thrombotic microangiopathies represent the majority of thrombotic microangiopathies. Multiple thrombotic microangiopathies causes are present in one half of secondary thrombotic microangiopathies. The risks of dialysis, neurologic and cardiac complications, and death vary by the cause of thrombotic microangiopathies. Sternal wound complications in patients undergoing orthotopic heart transplantation
ConclusionSternal wound infections impart a significant burden on patients with OHT. Causative organisms are predominantly virulent gram ‐negative bacteria. Therefore, a high index of suspicion must be maintained for early detection and treatment.

Trends in Utilization, Mortality, Major Complications and Cost after Total Artificial Heart Implantation in the United States (2009-2015).
CONCLUSION: In-hospital mortality and complication rates associated with TAH implantation remain increased and did not change in the era of continuous flow LVADs. PMID: 30790715 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Muscle Mass and Mortality After Cardiac Transplantation
Conclusions Muscle mass is an independent predictor of mortality and major morbidity after OHT. Further research is needed to determine whether frail OHT patients with low PMA may benefit from muscle-building interventions to improve outcomes.

Left ventricular assist device exchange for the treatment of HeartMate II pump thrombosis.
Conclusions: It is generally feasible to treat pump thrombosis via LVAD exchange. Yet, the exchange procedure is not without risk and the risk of re-thrombosis (34%), stroke (29%), postoperative dialysis (29%) and perioperative complications remains high. PMID: 30034845 [PubMed]

Cerebrovascular Accidents During Mechanical Circulatory Support Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Stroke is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients on LVAD support. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease increases the risk of ischemic stroke, whereas dialysis may increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke. Although any stroke increases mortality, post-LVAD hemorrhagic stroke was associated with higher mortality compared with ischemic stroke.
