Transportation noise and risk of stroke: a nationwide prospective cohort study covering Denmark
ConclusionRoad-traffic noise increased the risk of stroke. These findings add to the evidence of road-traffic noise as a cardiovascular risk factor.

Statin use is associated with lower risk of dementia in stroke patients: a community-based cohort study with inverse probability weighted marginal structural model analysis
AbstractCurrent evidence is inconclusive on cognitive benefits or harms of statins among stroke patients, who have high risk of dementia. This observational cohort study investigated the association between statin use and post-stroke dementia using data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink. Patients without prior dementia who had an incident stroke but received no statins in the preceding year were followed for up to 10  years. We used inverse probability weighted marginal structural models to estimate observational analogues of intention-to-treat (ITT, statin initiation vs. no initiation) and per-protocol (PP, su...

Ischemic Stroke and Systemic Embolism Among One-and-Done Direct Oral Anticoagulant Users with Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation
CONCLUSION: A substantial proportion of patients were one-and-done DOAC users, which was associated with significantly higher risk of ischemic stroke/SE events. There is an unmet need to improve access and encourage continuous use of DOACs among patients with NVAF so that severe and fatal complications may be mitigated.PMID:36947331 | DOI:10.1007/s12325-023-02483-4

Trends and ethnic differences in stroke recurrence and mortality in a bi-ethnic population, 2000-2019: a novel application of an illness-death model
CONCLUSIONS: An ethnic disparity in post-recurrence mortality was newly identified, driven by the increasing trend in MAs but a decreasing trend in NHWs.PMID:37054958 | DOI:10.1016/j.annepidem.2023.04.003

Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Dermcidin-Containing Migrasomes enhance LC3-Associated Phagocytosis of Pulmonary Macrophages and Protect against Post-Stroke Pneumonia
Adv Sci (Weinh). 2023 May 28:e2206432. doi: 10.1002/advs.202206432. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPneumonia is one of the leading causes of death in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Antibiotics fail to improve prognosis of patients with post-stroke pneumonia, albeit suppressing infection, due to adverse impacts on the immune system. The current study reports that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSC) downregulate bacterial load in the lungs of stroke mice models. RNA-sequencing of the lung from BM-MSC-treated stroke models indicates that BM-MSC modulates pulmonary macrophage activities after cerebral ischem...

Acute reperfusion treatment and secondary prevention of cancer-related stroke: comprehensive overview and proposal of clinical algorithm
In conclusion, acute CRS remains a clinical challenge, with many patients suffering recurrent stroke, despite preventive measures. More randomized-controlled clinical trials are urgently needed to pinpoint the most effective management options for this subset of stroke patients.PMID:37342814 | PMC:PMC10278431 | DOI:10.1177/17562864231180717

Atrial fibrillation and risk of stroke in dialysis patients
Abstract: Purpose: Both stroke and chronic atrial fibrillation (AF) are common in dialysis patients, but uncertainty exists in the incidence of new strokes and the risk conferred by chronic AF.Methods: A cohort of dually eligible (Medicare and Medicaid) incident dialysis patients was constructed. Medicare claims were used to determine the onset of chronic AF, which was specifically treated as a time-dependent covariate. Cox proportional hazards models were used to model time to stroke. Results: Of 56,734 patients studied, 5629 (9.9%) developed chronic AF. There were 22.8 ischemic and 5.0 hemorrhagic strokes per 1000 patient...

Telephone follow-up was more expensive but more efficient than postal in a national stroke registry
Conclusion: Posthospital stroke outcome data were slower to collect by mail, but the method achieved a similar completion rate and was significantly cheaper to conduct than follow-up telephone interview. Findings are informative for planning outcome data collection in large numbers of patients with acute stroke.
