Feasibility of national living guideline methods: the Australian Stroke Guidelines
Key findingsIt is feasible to produce living evidence-based guidelines covering a wide range of topics related to management of stroke or transient ischaemic attack. What this adds to what is knownLiving evidence synthesis methods are becoming more common particularly in response to the COIVD-19 crisis. However, whether these methods can be applied to a large national guideline was unclear. This work shows that it is possible to develop rigorous living guidelines and update them by considering all major randomised trials and systematic reviews each month.

Update on the Global Burden of Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke in 1990-2013: The GBD 2013 Study
Conclusion: Global stroke burden continues to increase globally. More efficient stroke prevention and management strategies are urgently needed to halt and eventually reverse the stroke pandemic, while universal access to organized stroke services should be a priority.Neuroepidemiology 2015;45:161-176

Sleep Duration and the Risk of Mortality From Stroke in Japan: The Takayama Cohort Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Data suggest that longer sleep duration is associated with increased mortality from total and ischemic stroke. Short sleep duration may be associated with a decreased risk of mortality from hemorrhagic stroke in men. PMID: 26521720 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stroke Prevalence, Mortality and Disability-Adjusted Life Years in Children and Youth Aged 0-19 Years: Data from the Global and Regional Burden of Stroke 2013
Conclusions: Globally, between 1990 and 2013, there was a significant increase in the absolute number of prevalent childhood strokes, while absolute numbers and rates of both deaths and DALYs declined significantly. The gap in childhood stroke burden between developed and developing countries is closing; however, in 2013, childhood stroke burden in terms of absolute numbers of prevalent strokes, deaths and DALYs remained much higher in developing countries. There is an urgent need to address these disparities with both global and country-level initiatives targeting prevention as well as improved access to acute and chronic...

Mortality of Stroke and Its Subtypes in China: Results from a Nationwide Population-Based Survey
Conclusions: The burden of stroke in China is still heavy. Greater attention should be paid to improve strategies for preventing stroke.Neuroepidemiology 2017;48:95-102

National Stroke Registry Programme in India for Surveillance and Research: Design and Methodology
The objectives of the National Stroke Registry Programme (NSRP), India, are to generate reliable data on the incidence of first-ever stroke events in defined populations through a population-based stroke registry (PBSR) and to describe the patterns of care and outcomes of patients with stroke in different treatment settings through a hospital-based stroke registry (HBSR). Continuous systematic collection on a standardized format of diagnostic, treatment, and outcome information on stroke events in persons of defined population (PBSR) and those who attend hospitals (HBSR) is conducted through active data abstraction from re...

Sociodemographic and Geographic Variation in Awareness of Stroke Signs and Symptoms Among Adults - United States, 2017.
Abstract Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States (1). In 2017, on average, a stroke-related death occurred every 3 minutes and 35 seconds in the United States, and stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability (1). To prevent mortality or long-term disability, strokes require rapid recognition and early medical intervention (2,3). Common stroke signs and symptoms include sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side; sudden confusion or trouble speaking; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, or loss of balance; and a...

Development of the Madrid Stroke Programme: Milestones and Changes in Stroke Trends and Mortality from 1997 to 2017
Conclusions: Our study illustrates how measures such as the development of stroke units, implementation of a regional stroke code and treatment with intravenous thrombolysis coincide in time with a reduction in in-hospital mortality due to stroke.Neuroepidemiology

Rural Stroke Surveillance and Establishment of Acute Stroke Care Pathway Using Frontline Health Workers in Rural Northwest India: The Ludhiana Experience
Conclusion: ASHAs were able to identify stroke patients in the villages. Despite high numbers of patients reaching health-care facilities within a window period, the hospitals were unable to provide acute stroke treatment like thrombolysis. The health-care system needs to be strengthened to improve stroke care.Neuroepidemiology

African Rigorous Innovative Stroke Epidemiological Surveillance: Protocol for a Community-Based Mobile-Health Study
Despite projections of stroke being a leading cause of mortality in Africa, reliable estimates of stroke burden on the continent using rigorous methods are not available. We aimed to implement a mobile-Health community-based interactive Stroke Information and Surveillance System to sustainably measure stroke burden and improve stroke health literacy and outcomes in urban and rural sites in Nigeria. African Rigorous Innovative Stroke Epidemiological Surveillance (ARISES) is an observational cohort study, which will be conducted in urban (Ibadan North LGA Ward 3) and rural (Ibarapa Central LGA) sites with a combined base pop...

Stroke Mortality Among Black and White Adults Aged ≥35 Years Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic - United States, 2015-2021
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2023 Apr 21;72(16):431-436. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7216a4.ABSTRACTStroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of long-term disability in the United States (1). Although stroke death rates have declined since the 1950s, age-adjusted rates remained higher among non-Hispanic Black or African American (Black) adults than among non-Hispanic White (White) adults (1,2). Despite intervention efforts to reduce racial disparities in stroke prevention and treatment through reducing stroke risk factors, increasing awareness of stroke symptoms, and improving access to treatment and care for s...
