High Prevalence of Stroke in Rural Gadchiroli, India: A Community-Based Study
Background: In the near future, a majority of strokes are projected to occur in developing countries. However, population-level information on the prevalence of stroke from rural areas of developing countries, including India, is rare. We estimated the prevalence of stroke in a rural area of one of the most underdeveloped districts of India. Methods: Trained surveyors conducted a house-to-house survey using a validated screening questionnaire in a well-defined population of 45,053 living in 39 villages in a demographic surveillance site in Gadchiroli district. A trained physician and a neurologist evaluated screen-positive...

Gender-Related Differences and Short-Term Outcome of Stroke: Results from a Hospital-Based Registry in Sub-Saharan Africa
Conclusions: Sex differences exist in the clinical profile of stroke but not in the outcome. Knowledge of these differences could help influence stroke prevention, thereby improving stroke burden in Africa.Neuroepidemiology 2017;49:179 –188

Incidence and Current Treatment Gaps in Pediatric Stroke and TIA: An Ontario-Wide Population-Based Study
Conclusion: Our population-based study yielded a higher incidence rate than prior North-American studies. Important care gaps exist including delayed diagnosis, lack of expert care, and departure from published treatment guidelines. Variability in ICD PPV and yield underlines the need for prospective data collection and for improving the pediatric stroke and TIA coding processes.Neuroepidemiology 2019;52:119 –127

Disability-Adjusted Life-Years Due to Stroke in Kenya
Conclusion: The YLD, YLL, and DALYs observed reinforce the need for targeted prevention of risk factors and comprehensive stroke care initiatives in Kenya.Neuroepidemiology

Risk of Ischemic Stroke after an Inpatient Hospitalization for Transient Ischemic Attack in the United States
Conclusions: Patients hospitalized for TIA have a lower risk of ischemic stroke compared to that reported in the studies based on the emergency room and/or outpatient clinic evaluation. Among these patients, those with cardiovascular comorbidities remain at a higher risk of readmission due to ischemic stroke despite undergoing an inpatient evaluation and should therefore be the target for future preventive strategies.Neuroepidemiology

HIV Viremia and Risk of Stroke Among People Living with HIV Who Are Using Antiretroviral Therapy
Conclusions: Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that elevated HIV VL may increase stroke risk, regardless of previous VL levels.

Renal Impairment and Risk of Acute Stroke: The INTERSTROKE Study
Conclusion: Renal impairment is an important risk factor for stroke, particularly in younger patients, and is associated with more severe stroke and worse outcomes.Neuroepidemiology

Characteristics, Management, and Case-Fatality of Patients Hospitalized for Stroke with a Diagnosis of COVID-19 in France
Conclusion: Patients hospitalized for stroke with a concomitant COVID-19 diagnosis had a higher inhospital and 3 months case-fatality rates compared to patients hospitalized for stroke without a COVID-19 diagnosis. Further research is needed to better understand the excess of mortality related to these cases.Neuroepidemiology

Reduction in Acute Stroke Admissions during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Data from a National Stroke Registry
Conclusion: The marked decrease in admissions for acute stroke and TIA, occurring at a time of a relatively low burden of COVID-19, is of great concern. Public awareness campaigns are needed as patients reluctant to seek urgent stroke care are deprived of lifesaving procedures and secondary prevention treatments.Neuroepidemiology

Metalworking Fluid Exposure and Stroke Mortality Among U.S. Autoworkers
We examined implications of exposure to PM composed of metalworking fluids (MWF) for stroke mortality in the United Autoworkers-General Motors cohort. Cox proportional hazards models with age as the timescale were used to estimate the association of cumulative straight, soluble, and synthetic MWF exposure with stroke mortality controlling for sex, race, plant, calendar year, and hire year. Among 38,553 autoworkers followed 1941-1995, we identified 114 ischemic stroke deaths and 113 hemorrhagic stroke deaths. Overall stroke mortality risk was increased among workers in the middle exposure category for straight MWF (HR: 1.31...

Exploring the shared experiences of people with stroke and caregivers in preparedness to manage post-discharge care: A hermeneutic study
CONCLUSIONS: Similarities and differences in perceived preparedness to manage post-discharge care existed between stroke dyadic members. A co-design approach to developing and implementing discharge plans would enhance planned post-discharge care.IMPACT: Hospital-to-home transition is a challenging time for people with stroke and their caregivers. Understanding the shared experiences of stroke dyads in preparedness for post-discharge care enables nurses to take proactive actions to enhance managing post-discharge care. Early identification of those at risk of developing psychological stress will enable nurses to co-develop...
