Update on the Preventive Antibiotics in Stroke Study (PASS): a randomised controlled phase 3 clinical trial
Conclusion: The data from PASS will establish whether preventive antibiotic therapy in acute stroke improves functional outcome by preventing infection. In this update, we changed our primary outcome analysis from dichotomisation to ordinal regression analysis.Trial registration: Current controlled trials; ISRCTN66140176. Date of registration: 6 April 2010.

Phenotyping Stroke in Sub-Saharan Africa: Stroke Investigative Research and Education Network (SIREN) Phenomics Protocol
Background: As the second leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult-onset disability, stroke is a major public health concern particularly pertinent in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where nearly 80% of all global stroke mortalities occur, and stroke burden is projected to increase in the coming decades. However, traditional and emerging risk factors for stroke in SSA have not been well characterized, thus limiting efforts at curbing its devastating toll. The Stroke Investigative Research and Education Network (SIREN) project is aimed at comprehensively evaluating the key environmental and genomic risk factors for s...

Lost Productivity in Stroke Survivors: An Econometrics Analysis
Conclusions: Stroke survivors are less likely to be employed and they earn a lower hourly wage than the general population. Interventions such as dedicated vocational rehabilitation and policies targeting return to work could be considered to address this lost productivity among stroke survivors.Neuroepidemiology 2016;47:164-170

Can Survival Bias Explain the Age Attenuation of Racial Inequalities in Stroke Incidence?: A Simulation Study
Conclusions: A relatively moderate unmeasured common cause of stroke and survival could fully account for observed age attenuation of racial inequalities in stroke.

Development of a diagnosis score for stroke in the Lebanese population
In conclusion, the DS-Stroke is a useful tool for emergency physicians, non-specialists and front-line clinicians. It is a good diagnosis tool for use to diagnose stroke at emergency, call for further emergency testing if necessary and speed up treatment.

Stroke Patients with Atrial Fibrillation Treated with Oral Anticoagulants: Comparison of the Population-Based Stroke Registry of Dijon and the French National Health Databases
Conclusion: If administrative health databases can be a useful tool to study the epidemiology of anticoagulated AF in stroke patients, population-based stroke registries as the Dijon Stroke Registry remain essential to fully study the epidemiology of strokes with anticoagulated AF.Neuroepidemiology

Women With Osteoarthritis Are at Increased Risk of Ischemic Stroke: A Population-Based Cohort Study.
CONCLUSION: Women with OA are at an elevated risk of ischemic stroke. A close monitoring of hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and other stroke related comorbidities is required for stroke prevention for OA patients. PMID: 33536376 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Stroke Epidemiology in Oceania: A Review
Conclusions: Stroke is a major healthcare problem in Oceania. Variations in stroke epidemiology are found between countries in Oceania. Data are lacking in some; more research into the burden of stroke in Oceania is needed. With the expected increase in life expectancy and vascular risk factors, the burden of stroke in Oceania will likely rise. Some of the disparities in stroke burden may be addressed by great investment in healthcare.Neuroepidemiology

Care for post-stroke patients at Malaysian public health centres: self-reported practices of family medicine specialists
Conclusions: Post discharge stroke care guidelines and access to rehabilitation services at primary care is needed for post stroke patients residing at home in the community.

Stroke Prevention Worldwide - What Could Make It Work
The global burden of stroke is of continual major importance for global health. The present report addresses some of the core principles that could make stroke prevention work. The prevention of stroke shares many common features with other non-communicable diseases (NCDs); stroke prevention should therefore be part of the joint actions on NCD led by the WHO and member states. Stroke prevention is an integral part of both the 2011 UN declaration on actions on NCDs and the UN Post-2015 Sustainable Developmental Goals. Stroke prevention requires an intersectoral approach, with important responsibilities on the part of govern...

Sex Differences in Stroke Incidence, Prevalence, Mortality and Disability-Adjusted Life Years: Results from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013
Background: Accurate information on stroke burden in men and women are important for evidence-based healthcare planning and resource allocation. Previously, limited research suggested that the absolute number of deaths from stroke in women was greater than in men, but the incidence and mortality rates were greater in men. However, sex differences in various metrics of stroke burden on a global scale have not been a subject of comprehensive and comparable assessment for most regions of the world, nor have sex differences in stroke burden been examined for trends over time. Methods: Stroke incidence, prevalence, mortality, d...

Vital Signs: Recent Trends in Stroke Death Rates - United States, 2000-2015.
CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICE: Prior declines in stroke death rates have not continued in recent years, and substantial variations exist in timing and magnitude of change by demographic and geographic characteristics. These findings suggest the importance of strategically identifying opportunities for prevention and intervening in vulnerable populations, especially because effective and underused interventions to prevent stroke incidence and death are known to exist. Change in the Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate Over Time and Risk of First Stroke in Hypertensive Patients
CONCLUSION: In Chinese hypertensive patients, both the decline and increase of eGFR levels were independently associated with the risks of first stroke or first ischemic stroke.PMID:35400712 | DOI:10.2188/jea.JE20210242
