Chronic Kidney Disease and Functional Outcomes 6 Months after Ischemic Stroke: A Prospective Multicenter Study
This study is an interim report of the Korean Stroke Cohort for Functioning and Rehabilitation. The sample included 2,037 ischemic stroke patients aged 18 years or older. The FIM and K-MBI scores were assessed at discharge and at 6 months after the onset of stroke. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation. CKD was defined as an eGFR

Incidence of Stroke and Transient Ischemic Attack in Croatia: A Population Based Study.
Abstract The aim of this population based neuroepidemiological study was to establish the real incidence rates of acute cerebrovascular disease (CVD): stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) in the Republic of Croatia. Multicentric study included 89 501 persons of all ages in four regional centres in Croatia: Zagreb, Osijek + Slavonski Brod, Rijeka and Split. The following incidence rates of stroke, expressed at population of 100 000, have been established: Zagreb 290.52, Osijek + Slavonski Brod 302.14, Rijeka 219.65, Split 195.82. Incidence rate of stroke for the Republic of Croatia is 251.39. The following in...

Announcement: National Stroke Awareness Month - May 2016.
Authors: Abstract May is National Stroke Awareness Month, an observance that raises awareness of the signs and symptoms of stroke and encourages persons to act FAST (Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911) if someone is having a stroke. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and a leading cause of severe disability (1,2). In the United States, one person dies from stroke every 4 minutes (2). Menstrual Factors and Stroke Incidence in Japanese Postmenopausal Women: The Ohasama Study
Conclusions: Early menarche and its associated features might be a useful tool for future intervention strategies targeting modifiable factors that trigger menstrual onset.Neuroepidemiology 2016;47:109-116

Stroke among Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients: Does Age Matter A Real-Life Study
Conclusion: RA is independently associated with stroke, especially among RA patients under 65 years, for whom cardiovascular risk factors were more prominent. Physicians should advise RA patients to manage their risk factors strictly.Neuroepidemiology 2017;49:99 –105

Long-Term Outcomes of Ischemic Stroke of Undetermined Mechanism: A Population-Based Prospective Cohort
Conclusions: The classification of ISUM as a single group may lead to over- or underestimation of mortality and recurrence in this major category of IS. A better definition of ISUM is necessary to predict death and recurrence accurately.Neuroepidemiology 2017;49:160 –164

Differential Susceptibility in Ambient Particle-Related First-Ever Stroke Onset Risk: Findings From a National Case-Crossover Study.
Abstract Different populations may respond differently to ambient fine particulate (PM2.5) exposure; however, less is known about the distribution of susceptible individuals among the entire population. We conducted a time-stratified case-crossover design to assess associations between stroke risk and PM2.5. During 2013-2015, 1,356 first-ever stroke onset events were derived from a large representative sample, the China National Stroke Screening Survey (CNSSS) database; daily PM2.5 averages with a spatial resolution of 0.1° were estimated using a data assimilation approach combining satellite measurements, air mo...

Direct comparative effectiveness and safety between non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants for stroke prevention in nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies
In this study, apixaban was found to have the most favorable safety profile amongst the three NOACs. No significant difference was observed in risk of stroke or systemic embolism be tween the NOACs. Such findings may provide some decision-making support for physicians regarding their choices amongst NOACs in patients with AF.Registration PROSPERO (identifier: CRD42016052908).

Association of serum markers of oxidative stress with myocardial infarction and stroke: pooled results from four large European cohort studies
AbstractOxidative stress contributes to endothelial dysfunction and is involved in the pathogenesis of myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke. However, associations of biomarkers of oxidative stress with MI and stroke have not yet been addressed in large cohort studies. A nested case –control design was applied in four population-based cohort studies from Germany, Czech Republic, Poland and Lithuania. Derivatives of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs) levels, as a proxy for the reactive oxygen species burden, and total thiol levels (TTL), as a proxy for the reductive capacity , were measured in baseline serum samples of ...

Association of vegetable, fruit, and Okinawan vegetable consumption with incident stroke and coronary heart disease.
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that consumption of total vegetable and fruit, total Okinawan vegetables, and specific Okinawan vegetables in Japanese residents of Okinawa was not associated with risk of incident stroke and coronary heart disease. Reliability of Telephone Interview for Assessment of Long-Term Stroke Outcomes: Evidence from Interrater Analysis
Conclusion: It is reliable to get multiple raters in assessing mRS and BI using the telephone system. It is worthwhile to make use of a telephone interview to update clinicians on their acute clinical management towards long-term stroke prognosis.Neuroepidemiology 2019;52:214 –219

Walking on the Moon: A randomized clinical trial on the role of lower body positive pressure treadmill training in post-stroke gait impairment.
Abstract Body weight-supported treadmill training (BWSTT) can be usefully employed to facilitate gait recovery in patients with neurological injuries. Specifically, lower body positive pressure support system (LBPPSS) decreases weight-bearing and ground reaction forces with potentially positive effects on qualitative gait indices. However, which gait features are being shaped by LBPPSS in post-stroke patients is yet poorly predictable. A pilot study on the effects of LBPPSS on qualitative and quantitative gait indices was carried out in patients with hemiparesis due to stroke in the chronic phase. Fifty patients, ...

Pattern Recognition to Objectively Differentiate the Etiology of Cognitive Decline: Analysis of the Impact of Stroke and Alzheimer ’s Disease
This study examined the amount of variance in age-related cognitive change that is accounted for by AD and stroke using a novel pattern re cognition protocol.Method: Secondary analyses of data collected for the Health and Retirement Study (N = 17,579) were used to objectively characterize patterns of cognitive decline associated with AD and stroke. The rate of decline in episodic memory and orientation was the outcome of interest, while algorithms indicative of AD and stroke pathology were the predictors of interest. Results: The average age of the sample was 67.54 ± 10.45 years at baseline, and they completed, on average,...
