Evaluation of pharyngeal muscle activity through nasopharyngeal surface electromyography in a cohort of dysphagic patients with acute ischaemic stroke.
Authors: Giannantoni NM, Minisci M, Brunetti V, Scarano E, Testani E, Vollono C, De Corso E, Bastanza G, D'Alatri L, Della Marca G Abstract Oro-pharyngeal dysphagia is frequently present during the acute phase of stroke. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the recording of surface EMG using a nasopharyngeal (NP) electrode could be applied to evaluation of pharyngeal muscle activity in acute stroke patients and if this neurophysiological measure is related with clinical assessment of swallowing. Patients were examined and clinical severity was assessed with the National Institute of Health Stroke Sc...

Dabigatran: A new oral anticoagulant. Guidelines to follow in oral surgery procedures. A systematic review of the literature.
Conclusions: Currently, there is no consensus on the procedure to be followed in patients taking dabigatran. However, all authors agree to treat each case individually in accordance to the risk of embolism, postoperative bleeding and renal function. Also, it is necessary to perform minimally invasive interventions, and take the appropriate local anti-hemolytic measures. PMID: 27694780 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Symptomatic stroke complicating central skull base osteomyelitis following otitis media in a 2-Year Old Boy: Case Report and Review of the Literature
This report describes the first case of symptomatic ischaemic stroke secondary to SBO in an immunocompetent child. We review the literature of the management and the potential cerebrovascular complications of central SBO in children secondary to otolaryngological infection.

Cardiac comorbidity in head and neck cancer patients and its influence on cancer treatment selection and mortality: a prospective cohort study
AbstractComorbidity assessment and a profound cardiac examination were implemented into pre-treatment diagnostics to analyze their influence on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) therapy selection and short-term mortality. Comorbidity was measured prospectively in 49 HNSCC patients using standard indices between 2012 and 2013. Cardiac examinations included electrocardiogram, echocardiography, and bicycle ergometry. Most patients had stage IV tumors (61  %), smoked (61 %), and showed alcohol abuse (57 %); 38 patients (78 %) received a multimodal therapy; 65 % had an adult comorbidity evaluation 27 index ≥2...

Blunt cerebrovascular injury following craniomaxillofacial fractures: A systematic review
ConclusionBlunt cerebrovascular injury is a rare but devastating complication of blunt trauma. The recommended screening modality is CTA, and the most common treatment is antiplatelet/anticoagulant medication. Mandibular and LeFort fractures were the most common isolated CMF injury associated with BCVI, highlighting the need for prospective trials to expand current screening criteria. Level of EvidenceN/A. Neural Mechanisms Contributing to Dysphagia in Mouse Models
Investigative research into curative treatments for dysphagia is hindered by our incomplete understanding of the neural mechanisms of swallowing in health and disease. Development of translational research models is essential to bridge this knowledge gap by fostering innovative methodology. Toward this goal, our laboratory has developed a translational research assessment tool to investigate the neural mechanistic control of swallowing in unrestrained, self-feeding mice. Here we describe our initial development of synchronous brainstem neural recordings with a videofluoroscopic swallow study assay in healthy mice across th...

Neck dissection and stroke in patients with oral cavity cancer: A population ‐based cohort study
ConclusionOur data demonstrate that neck dissection does not increase the risk of stroke in patients with oral cavity cancer. Patients have higher risk of stroke after cancer treatment because of their older age, specific comorbidities, and/or type of postoperative treatment. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck, 2016

Primary Epidermoid Tumors of the Cerebellopontine Angle: A Review of 47 Cases
Conclusions: Surgical intervention is effective in alleviating symptoms of cranial neuropathy and brainstem compression from CPA epidermoids. Gross total resection is preferred; however, aggressive subtotal removal should be considered with adherent or extensive disease as reoperation rates are low, even in the setting of aggressive subtotal resection. Conservative observation with serial imaging is a viable initial strategy in asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic patients.

Management of Major Vascular Injury: Open
Major blood vessels are in proximity to other vital structures in the neck and base of skull. Infections and tumors of the head and neck can invade vascular structures. Vascular injuries can lead to massive hemorrhage, cerebral ischemia, or stroke. Emergency and definitive management can be challenging.

Surgical salvage of recurrent vestibular schwannoma following prior stereotactic radiosurgery
ConclusionMicrosurgical salvage of VS following primary radiation therapy is challenging. Less‐than‐complete resection is required in a greater percentage of patients to preserve facial nerve integrity and prevent neurological complications. Long‐term follow‐up is needed to determine the risk of delayed progression following incomplete tumor removal. Level of EvidenceLevel 3. Laryngoscope, 2016

Pregnancy is not a risk factor for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss: A nationwide population-based study.
Conclusion Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) in pregnancy is rare. It usually occurs in the third trimester. SSNHL in pregnancy does not increase risks during delivery or subsequent stroke. Objectives This study aimed to investigate the incidence and to determine the factors associated with SSNHL in pregnancy. Method Data were retrieved from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Database (NHIRD), covering the years 2000-2009. Patients admitted for SSNHL during pregnancy were enrolled. An age-matched controlled cohort was randomly selected from pregnant women without SSNHL in the NHIRD. The clinical characteristics of ...
