Orofacial functional impairments among patients following stroke: a systematic review
ConclusionsExisting evidence highlights a number of compromised orofacial functions experienced by patients following stroke. These impairments appear to be sustained, with spontaneous recovery unlikely to occur. While rehabilitative approaches may have the potential to improve orofacial function and quality of life following stroke, there is currently a lack of evidence‐based interventions available to inform the development of comprehensive rehabilitation protocols. This article is protected by copyright. The effect of fidelity: How expert behavior changes in a virtual reality environment
ConclusionSlight differences in drill interaction between a virtual environment and the real world can have measurable effects on surgical technique, particularly in terms of stroke length, duration, and curvature. It is important to understand these effects when designing and implementing surgical training programs based on VR simulation—and when improving the fidelity of VR simulators to facilitate use of a similar technique in both real and simulated situations. Dental implants in patients at high risk for infective endocarditis: a preliminary study
Abstract: The safety of dental implant placement in patients at high risk for infective endocarditis (IE) has never been shown. The outcome of osseointegrated implants in patients with artificial heart valves or with a history of an infected valve is not known. In this article we describe our experience of dental implant placement in patients at high risk for IE. A retrospective study was conducted on patients at high risk for IE who underwent dental implant placement. All the patients received prophylactic antibiotic treatment before the surgical procedure, in accordance with the relevant American Heart Association guidel...

Gastroesophageal Reflux in Chronic Cough and Cough Syncope and the Effect of Antireflux Treatment: Case Report and Literature Review.
CONCLUSION: For chronic cough and cough syncope of unknown cause, the GER assessment could be valuable. In treating well-selected GER-related chronic cough and cough syncope, PPI, SRF, and LF can be considered. Moreover, satisfactory restoration of physical and social functions could be achieved after effective antireflux therapy. PMID: 24842868 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Microvascular free tissue reconstruction in the patient with multiple courses of radiation
ConclusionsMicrovascular free tissue transfer to the head and neck is expected to provide a successful reconstruction in patients who have received multiple courses of radiation and who develop second primary tumors, recurrence of disease, or who suffer from late complications of their radiation therapy. Predictor of rehabilitation outcome for dysphagia
Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that a combination of factors other than stroke, including cognitive dysfunction and a decrease in activity of daily living (ADL) influence the outcome of dysphagia. It is not rare for patients who resume oral intake to be readmitted within a year for symptoms such as fever. Therefore, effective rehabilitation programs should be developed for the impairments of elderly patients and common disabilities such as dysphagia.

Detection of calcifications in panoramic radiographs in patients with carotid stenoses ≥50%
Conclusions: Carotid calcifications are seen in PRs in 84% of patients with carotid stenosis ≥50%, independent of gender. FRs do not contribute significantly to this identification.

Posterior circulation ischemic stroke in childhood and neurofibromatosis type 2
We report the clinical and genetic findings and review the previous literature on vasculopathy reported in association with NF2, with a focus on the symptoms presenting at disease onset. For our case patient, an unpublished germline mutation resulting in frameshift (c.876_877insT) was identified on blood screening. We report our full multidisciplinary assessment with vascular angiography, volumetric MRI and audiometry. Vasculopathy is not currently included in the criteria traditionally used for diagnosis of NF2. We suggest that vascular stroke in childhood may be considered a presenting symptom for NF2.

Trigeminal sensory recovery using processed nerve allografts for large continuity defects
The processed nerve allograft, Avance (AxoGen, Alachua, FL), has become a popular alternative to an autograft for the repair of nerve injuries, including the trigeminal nerve. Clinical outcome data on their safety and effectiveness in restoring sensory function of the trigeminal nerve is needed. Sensory assessments of trigeminal nerve injuries were conducted at pre-surgical, 3, 6, and 12 months post-surgical reconstruction with Avance® Nerve Graft. Subjects with at least 6 months of follow-up were included in this analysis. Assessments included brush stroke directional sensation (BSDS), static 2-point discrimination (s2PD...
