Impact of dialysis modality on the survival of patients with end-stage renal disease and prior stroke
Conclusions PD was associated with overall poorer survival among patients with diabetes, ESRD and prior stroke and with similar overall survival among patients with ESRD and prior stroke, but without diabetes, compared with HD.

Risk of major cardiovascular events in patients with hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis with special reference to stroke
Kim et al. determined the incidence rates of major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) and compared several types of events between hemodialysis (HD) patients and peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients [1]. The authors handled 22,892 HD patients and 7,387 PD patients in Korea by intention-to-treat method, and median follow-up period was 21.5 months. Valvular calcification upon initiating dialysis predict the appearance of cardiovascular events in patient evolution.

Warfarin Use and the Risk for Stroke and Bleeding in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation Undergoing Dialysis.

Risk of Stroke in Long-term Dialysis Patients Compared With the General Population
Conclusions: Patients undergoing dialysis are at elevated risk of stroke. Patients undergoing PD appear to be less likely to develop hemorrhagic stroke than those undergoing HD. Comprehensive control of hypertension and diabetes is necessary when delivering dialysis treatment.

Amelioration of ischemic brain damage by peritoneal dialysis
Ischemic stroke is a devastating condition, for which there is still no effective therapy. Acute ischemic stroke is associated with high concentrations of glutamate in the blood and interstitial brain fluid. The inability of the tissue to retain glutamate within the cells of the brain ultimately provokes neuronal death. Increased concentrations of interstitial glutamate exert further excitotoxic effects on healthy tissue surrounding the infarct zone.
