Modifiable Risk Factors for Stroke and Strategies for Stroke Prevention
Semin Neurol 2017; 37: 237-258 DOI: 10.1055/s-0037-1603685The pathophysiology of stroke is well characterized, and 9 out of 10 strokes are due to modifiable factors. However, preventive strategies thus far have been relatively ineffective in curbing the global stroke burden, which is projected to increase given the aging of the world's population and epidemiological transition in many low- to middle-income countries. In this review we will summarize our current understanding of behavioral, environmental, and metabolic stroke risk factors not covered elsewhere in this issue. Specifically, we will review the evidence for env...

Stroke and food groups: an overview of systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
CONCLUSIONS: The current overview provided a high level of evidence to support the beneficial effect of specific foods on stroke outcome. Clinicians and policy makers could inform clinical practice and policy based on this overview. PMID: 29143697 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Risk of Coronary Heart Disease and Ischemic Stroke Incidence in Gastric Cancer Survivors: A Nationwide Study in Korea.
CONCLUSIONS: CHD and ischemic stroke risk decreased after gastrectomy. The amount of weight loss and accompanying metabolic changes seemed to mediate the reduction of such risk. Reassessment of cardiovascular risk factors after gastrectomy and consideration of cardiovascular risk in the selection of treatment modality are suggested. Interaction of High-Sugar Diet and History of Stroke with Risk of Cognitive Decline in Older Adults
CONCLUSIONS A high-sugar diet and history of stroke interacted synergically in association with cognitive decline in older adults, which might provide a reference for management of cognition in older adults.PMID:36059134 | DOI:10.12659/MSM.937572

Evaluating remote facilitation intensity for multi-national translation of nurse-initiated stroke protocols (QASC Australasia): a protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial
DISCUSSION: We will generate new evidence on the most effective facilitation intensity to support implementation of nurse-initiated stroke protocols nationwide, reducing geographical barriers for those in rural and remote areas.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ACTRN12622000028707. Differentiation of Serum sLOX-1 and NO Levels in Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients with Internal Carotid Artery Stenosis and Those Without Internal Carotid Artery Stenosis.
Conclusion: There are higher sLOX-1 and lower NO levels in AIS patients with ICAS when comparing those with NICAS. These parameters may become the novel potential biomarkers for predicting risk to acute ischemic stroke. PMID: 29916681 [PubMed]

3-Month Outcome of Ischemic Stroke Patients Underwent Thrombolytic Therapy; a Cohort Study.
Conclusion: There was no significant correlation between 3-month disabilities of stroke patients underwent thrombolytic therapy and age, sex, time from initiation of symptoms, or vital signs on admission. Patients with a blood sugar lower than 144 had better 3-month outcome. PMID: 32021987 [PubMed]

Consumption of coffee and tea and risk of developing stroke, dementia, and poststroke dementia: A cohort study in the UK Biobank
by Yuan Zhang, Hongxi Yang, Shu Li, Wei-dong Li, Yaogang Wang BackgroundPrevious studies have revealed the involvement of coffee and tea in the development of stroke and dementia. However, little is known about the association between the combination of coffee and tea and the risk of stroke, dementia, and poststroke dementia. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the associations of coffee and tea separately and in combination with the risk of developing stroke and dementia. Methods and findingsThis prospective cohort study included 365,682 participants (50 to 74 years old) from the UK Biobank. Participants joined the study f...

Researchers get a handle on how to control blood sugar after stroke
(NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) Hyperglycemia, or high levels of glucose, is common in patients with acute ischemic stroke and is associated with worse outcomes compared to normal blood sugar levels. Animal studies also pointed to an effect of high blood sugar in worsening stroke injury. Stroke experts have debated whether intensive glucose management after acute ischemic stroke leads to better outcomes but a new study in JAMA finds that aggressive methods are not better than standard approaches.

Mobilization of endothelial progenitor cell in patients with acute ischemic stroke
AbstractEndothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) have important effect in tissue repair in ischemic organs. The present study was conducted to demonstrate the mobilization of EPCs and its possible mechanism after acute ischemic stroke (AIS). A total of 148 individuals were examined, including 106 patients with ischemic stroke and 42 healthy controls. Seventy-one patients with imaging-confirmed AIS were examined at days 1, 7, 14, and 21 after stroke onset. Circulating EPCs were quantified by flow cytometry using CD133 and KDR surface markers. Serum stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) concentrations were determined by enzyme-li...

Predictors of intracerebral hemorrhage in acute stroke patients receiving intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator
Conclusion: High NIHSS score, increased stroke onset to thrombolysis time , high blood sugar at presentation ,prior diabetes and hypertension increase the chances of sICH. None of these contraindicate thrombolysing strokes but should caution the physician.
