Predicting Stroke Through Genetic Risk Functions: The CHARGE Risk Score Project Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The single-nucleotide polymorphisms associated with stroke and its risk factors result only in a small improvement in prediction of future stroke compared with the classical epidemiological risk factors for stroke.

Prevalence of physical activity and sedentary behavior among stroke survivors in the United States.
Conclusion: Findings from this study provide a basis for future work seeking to measure the impact of physical activity on the secondary prevention of stroke by characterizing the prevalence of physical activity and sedentary behavior among stroke survivors in the United States. Cryptogenic Subtype Predicts Reduced Survival Among Cancer Patients With Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Cryptogenic stroke is independently associated with reduced survival in patients with active cancer and ischemic stroke.

High Prevalence of Atrial Fibrillation Among Patients With Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Access to nationwide register data shows that AF is more common among patients with ischemic stroke than those previously reported. Few patients with stroke and AF had anticoagulant treatment before the event, and few got it after the event. CHA2DS2-VASc could be a useful monitoring tool to intensify efforts to diagnose AF among patients with cryptogenic stroke.

Associations Between Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate and Stroke Outcomes in Diabetic Versus Nondiabetic Patients Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Decreased eGFR (<45 mL/min per 1.73 m2) is a strong predictor of all-cause mortality, stroke recurrence, and stroke disability in diabetic and nondiabetic patients with acute stroke. Increased eGFR (≥120 mL/min per 1.73 m2) is associated with all of stroke outcomes in diabetic patients and linked to all-cause mortality in nondiabetic patients.

Pathogenic Ischemic Stroke Phenotypes in the NINDS-Stroke Genetics Network Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— This study demonstrates that pathogenic subtypes can be determined with good reliability in studies that include investigators with different expertise and background, institutions with different stroke evaluation protocols and geographic location, and patient populations with different epidemiological characteristics. The discordance between phenotypic and causative stroke subtypes highlights the fact that the presence of an abnormality in a patient with stroke does not necessarily mean that it is the cause of stroke.

Acute Hospital, Community, and Indirect Costs of Stroke Associated With Atrial Fibrillation: Population-Based Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In our population study, AF-stroke was associated with substantially higher total, acute hospital, nursing home, and general practitioner costs per patient. Targeted programs to identify AF and prevent AF-stroke may have significant economic benefits, in addition to health benefits.

Outcome determinants of stroke in a brazilian primary stroke center.
Conclusions. The stroke mortality and stroke outcome determinants found in the present study do not remarkably differ from studies carried out in developed countries. Stroke prognosis studies are crucial to better understand the high burden of stroke in Brazil. PMID: 25580352 [PubMed]

Community-Based Case-Control Study of Childhood Stroke Risk Associated With Congenital Heart Disease Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— CHD is an important childhood stroke risk factor. Children who undergo CHD surgery remain at elevated risk outside the perioperative period and would benefit from optimized long-term stroke prevention strategies.

Insomnia and health-related quality of life in stroke.
CONCLUSION: The findings show that stroke survivors who experienced insomnia had a reduced overall HRQoL and were impaired in the energy and thinking domains of HRQoL. Early screening for sleep disturbance would be beneficial to prevent later development of post-stroke insomnia. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions are suggested to improve HRQoL in stroke patients with insomnia. PMID: 25908494 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The pooled incidence of post-stroke seizure in 102 008 patients.
CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis showed that seizures occurred in about 6.93% of people with stroke. Seizures occurred more commonly after hemorrhagic stroke and when stroke occurred in the cortical region. PMID: 25920619 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Left Atrial Enlargement and Stroke Recurrence: The Northern Manhattan Stroke Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusion— Moderate to severe LAE was an independent marker of recurrent cardioembolic or cryptogenic stroke in a multiethnic cohort of ischemic stroke patients. Further research is needed to determine whether anticoagulant use may reduce risk of recurrence in ischemic stroke patients with moderate to severe LAE.
