Arteriopathy Diagnosis in Childhood Arterial Ischemic Stroke: Results of the Vascular Effects of Infection in Pediatric Stroke Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Clinical data and follow-up imaging help, yet uncertainty in the diagnosis of childhood arteriopathy remains. This presents a challenge to better understanding the mechanisms underlying these arteriopathies and designing strategies for prevention of childhood arterial ischemic stroke.

Catabolic Signaling and Muscle Wasting After Acute Ischemic Stroke in Mice: Indication for a Stroke-Specific Sarcopenia Basic Sciences
Conclusions— Catabolic pathways of muscle tissue are activated after stroke. Impaired feeding, sympathetic overactivation, or infection cannot fully explain this catabolic activation. Wasting of the target muscle of the disrupted innervation correlated to severity of brain injury. Our data indicate the presence of a stroke-specific sarcopenia.

Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells intrathecal transplantation in chronic stroke.
This study demonstrates the potential of autologous BMMNCs intrathecal transplantation in improving the prognosis of functional recovery in chronic stage of stroke. Further clinical trials are recommended. This trial is registered with NCT02065778. PMID: 25126443 [PubMed]

Stroke Survivors Scoring Zero on the NIH Stroke Scale Score Still Exhibit Significant Motor Impairment and Functional Limitation.
Conclusion. While being used in stroke trials, the NIHSS may have limited ability to discriminate between treatment responses, even when only a relatively narrow array of impairment levels exists among patients. Given these findings, NIHSS use should be restricted to acute stroke studies and clinical settings with the goal of reporting stroke severity. PMID: 24772367 [PubMed]

Kinesthetic taping improves walking function in patients with stroke: a pilot cohort study.
CONCLUSION: The results of this study indicate that kinesthetic taping of the anterior thigh and knee provides an immediate improvement in walking function in patients with stroke. Such a positive effect on motor function could be a valuable adjunct in physical therapy and rehabilitation of patients with stroke. PMID: 25467397 [PubMed - in process]

Hospitalization Within the First Year After Stroke: The Dijon Stroke Registry Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Stroke survivors are at high risk of hospitalization after the episode, and subsequent admission is associated with poor survival, thus highlighting the need for follow-up interventions after discharge to prevent readmission.

Can a Novel Clinical Risk Score Improve Pneumonia Prediction in Acute Stroke Care? A UK Multicenter Cohort Study Stroke
Conclusions The ISAN score is a simple tool for predicting SAP in clinical practice. External validation is required in ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke cohorts.

Job Strain and the Risk of Stroke: An Individual-Participant Data Meta-Analysis Brief Reports
Conclusion— Job strain may be associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke, but further research is needed to determine whether interventions targeting job strain would reduce stroke risk beyond existing preventive strategies.

Regional Availability of Mechanical Embolectomy for Acute Ischemic Stroke in California, 2009 to 2010 Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In California, most patients with stroke lived within reasonable ground transport distances from centers that performed ≥1 mechanical embolectomy in a 2-year period. The probability of receiving mechanical embolectomy for acute ischemic stroke was associated with living in close geographic proximity to these hospitals.

Effects of Blood Pressure-Lowering Treatment in Different Subtypes of Acute Ischemic Stroke Brief Reports
Conclusions— The results suggest that the effect of blood pressure–lowering treatment with candesartan may differ according to different types of acute ischemic stroke, but this needs to be confirmed in future trials. Efficiency of unimanual and bimanual reach in persons with and without stroke.
CONCLUSION: Motor efficiency of the unimpaired upper extremity may be adversely influenced when yoked with the impaired limb during symmetrical simple movements in persons with stroke. As such, motor efficiency is not exclusively limited to the impaired side, the effects of which may be task dependent. PMID: 25776121 [PubMed - in process]

B-Type Natriuretic Peptides Help in Cardioembolic Stroke Diagnosis: Pooled Data Meta-Analysis Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Natriuretic peptides are strongly increased in cardioembolic strokes. Future multicentre prospective studies comparing BNP and NT-proBNP might aid in finding the optimal biomarker, the best time point, and the optimal cutoff points for cardioembolic stroke identification.
