Meta-Analysis of Genome-Wide Association Studies Identifies Genetic Risk Factors for Stroke in African Americans Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— We identified a novel genetic variant associated with total stroke in African Americans and found that ischemic stroke loci identified in European-ancestry populations may also be relevant for African Americans. Our findings support investigation of diverse populations to identify and characterize genetic risk factors, and the importance of shared genetic risk across populations.

Embolic Strokes of Undetermined Source in the Athens Stroke Registry: An Outcome Analysis Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Long-term mortality risk in ESUS is lower compared with cardioembolic strokes, despite similar rates of recurrence and composite cardiovascular end point. Recurrent stroke risk is higher in ESUS than in noncardioembolic strokes.

Copeptin Levels in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke and Stroke Mimics Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— In the prehospital setting, copeptin is neither appropriate to discriminate between stroke and stroke mimic patients nor between vascular and nonvascular patients. Clinical Trial Registration— URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT01382862. The Pre-Hospital Acute Neurological Therapy and Optimization of Medical Care in Stroke Patients study (PHANTOM-S) was registered (NCT01382862). This sub-study was observational and not registered separately, therefore.

Long-Term Exposure to Particulate Matter Air Pollution Is a Risk Factor for Stroke: Meta-Analytical Evidence Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The scientific evidence of the past decade identifies long-term exposure to PM, and PM2.5 in particular, as a risk factor for stroke. However, we found some currently unexplained geographical variability in this association.

Electrocardiographic Left Atrial Abnormality and Risk of Stroke: Northern Manhattan Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— ECG-defined left atrial abnormality was associated with incident cryptogenic or cardioembolic stroke independently of the presence of AF, suggesting atrial thromboembolism may occur without recognized AF.

Determinants of Emergency Medical Services Utilization Among Acute Ischemic Stroke Patients in Hubei Province in China Brief Reports
Conclusions— A very low proportion of patients with acute ischemic stroke used the EMS in Hubei province in China. Considerable education programs are required regarding knowledge of potential symptoms and the importance of EMS for stroke.

Stroke, Physical Function, and Death Over a 15-Year Period in Older Australian Women Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— This study provides evidence of the long-term outcomes of stroke among older women, with women living for many years with poor PF. This outcome has important implications for the women’s quality of life during their later years and in understanding the burden of disability associated with stroke.

Hepatocyte Growth Factor Is Positively Associated With Risk of Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—Circulating HGF was positively associated with the incidence of stroke in a diverse, population-based cohort of men and women from the United States. Our findings support the hypothesis that circulating HGF is a marker of endothelial damage and suggest that HGF may have utility as a prognostic marker of stroke risk.

Altered Expression of Long Noncoding RNAs in Blood After Ischemic Stroke and Proximity to Putative Stroke Risk Loci Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—This study provides evidence of altered and sexually dimorphic lncRNA expression in peripheral blood of patients with stroke compared with that of controls and suggests that lncRNAs have potential for stroke biomarker development. Some regulated lncRNA could regulate some previously identified putative stroke-risk genes.
