A Novel Triple-Cell Two-Dimensional Model to Study Immune-Vascular Interplay in Atherosclerosis
Conclusions We have developed a co-culture model for the study of the immune-vascular interplay in atherosclerosis consisting of ECs, SMCs and an inflammatory compartment. In order to validate this model, we have demonstrated that the triple-cell 2D culture of ECs, SMCs, and THP-1 macrophage-like cells significantly alters the phenotype of ECs and SMCs within this culture in comparison with EC/SMC, EC/THP-1, or SMC/THP-1 double-cell cultures. Our results are indicative of the multi-directional communication between highly plastic vascular stromal cells and the immune system, which is now well recognized in the field, and ...

Anxiety in Patients With Acute Ischemic Stroke: Risk Factors and Effects on Functional Status
Conclusion: Depressive symptoms are the major correlates of PSA while more severe PSA is associated with poorer ADL and health-related QOL. Acute lesions involving CHWM may correlate with PSA in ischemic stroke patients with mild-to-moderate neurologic deficits, supporting a lesion-location hypothesis in PSA.IntroductionAnxiety is prevalent after stroke and occurs in about one-quarter of stroke survivors (1, 2). Poststroke anxiety (PSA) may have a negative impact on quality of life (QOL) of stroke survivors, affecting their rehabilitation (3). Furthermore, one prospective study found that severe anxiety symptoms were assoc...

Phagocytosis in the Brain: Homeostasis and Disease
Conclusions and Perspectives In this review we have summarized the critical role phagocytosis plays in both CNS homeostasis and disease. While much progress has been made in recent years, many unanswered questions remain. How phagocytosis in the CNS is influenced by numerous factors, such as microenvironment or phagocytic target, have yet to be fully resolved. Additionally, the utilization of novel technologies, including in vivo imaging techniques (217), iPSC-derived microglia (213) and high-throughput screens (66), will likely contribute to further identification of phagocytic pathways and consequences of phagocytosis w...

Returning to Unpaid Work after Stroke: The Psychosocial Outcomes in Stroke Cohort Study
Conclusions: More women are engaged in unpaid work before and at 12 months after stroke, but there is a reduction in the proportion of women returning to unpaid work at 12 months not seen in men. Consideration may need to be given to the development of rehabilitation strategies targeted at the specific needs of stroke survivors.Cerebrovasc Dis 2019;47:1 –7

Maximising data value and avoiding data waste: a validation study in stroke research.
CONCLUSION: We report the first linkage of data from an Australian national clinical quality disease registry with routinely collected data from several national and state government health datasets. Data linkage enriches the clinical registry dataset and provides additional information beyond that for the acute care setting and quality of life at follow-up, allowing clinical outcomes for people with stroke (mortality and hospital contacts) to be more comprehensively assessed. 20 years of researching stroke through audit.
This article records and reviews some questions that have been answered using data from the audit: Is the rate of institutional care after rehabilitation a possible measure of outcome? Does stroke unit care in routine practice give the benefits shown in randomized controlled trials? How is the quality of stroke care affected by a patient's age and the time of their stroke? Do patient-reported measures match those obtained from the professionals recording of processes of care? How do the processes of care after stroke affect mortality? Is thrombolysis safe to use in patients over the age of 80? Do staffing levels matter? Do...
