Mediterranean diet cuts heart and stroke risk
Conclusion The results of this randomised controlled trial appear to confirm previous studies that there are benefits to following a Mediterranean diet. The trial has many strengths, including its large size, long period of follow-up, thorough assessment of medical outcomes (including reviewing medical records and having contact with the family doctor), and careful attempts to assess whether the diets were being followed. As this is a randomised controlled trial, it should also balance out other health and lifestyle differences between the groups that may influence cardiovascular risk. This avoids the limitations of m...

A Combination of Atorvastatin and Aspirin Enhances the Pro-Regenerative Interactions of Marrow Stromal Cells and Stroke-Derived Monocytes In Vitro
Conclusion: Atorvastatin, alone and in combination with aspirin can promote anti-inflammatory effect by modulating the secretome profile of Mo and MSCs. Our results suggest that stroke trials involving the use of intravenous MSCs should consider the effect of aspirin and atorvastatin, both of which are administered to the majority of hospitalized ischemic stroke patients.

The PAr index, an indicator reflecting altered vitamin B-6 homeostasis, is associated with long-term risk of stroke in the general population: the Hordaland Health Study (HUSK).
Conclusions: Higher plasma PAr was independently associated with increased risk of incident stroke in all participants and across all subgroups stratified by conventional risk predictors. Our novel findings point to and expand the range of inflammation and immune activation processes that may be relevant for the pathogenesis and prevention of stroke. This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT03013725. PMID: 29381795 [PubMed - in process]

Characteristics of cerebral ischemic stroke based on moyamoya disease and atherosclerosis-associated intracranial arterial stenosis
ConclusionsDiffering from LAS stroke, MMD stroke mainly presents with WSI and does not feature with platelet hyper-aggregation and fragmentation of ulcer plaque. Whereby, focusing on perfusion improvement rather than antiplatelets and statins may be the predominant step in MMD-stroke correction.

Poor Adherence to Statin and Antihypertensive Therapies as Risk Factors for Fatal Stroke
ConclusionsIndividuals with hypercholesterolemia and hypertension who fail to take their prescribed statin and antihypertensive medication experience a substantially increased risk of fatal stroke. The risk is lower if the patient is adherent to either one of these therapies.

Get Rid of Toxins to Reduce Risk of Stroke
Effects of Toxins I’ve been warning you about the toxins in our environment for years. They cause inflammation… They make you gain weight… They cause you to feel fatigued… Our exposure to them starts before we’re even born. One study found 287 chemicals and toxins in the blood of newborn babies.1 It’s shocking. What is in the air we breathe? We breathe in toxins and air pollutants every day. Carbon dioxide, lead, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter (PM). Causes of Stroke Now, a new study reveals that air pollution is responsible for as many as one-third of all strokes.2 That’...

Effect of statin use on clinical outcomes in ischemic stroke patients with atrial fibrillation
The objective of this study was to clarify whether statin therapy can influence the prognosis in recent ischemic stroke patients with atrial fibrillation. We identified ischemic stroke patients with atrial fibrillation between 2001 and 2011 from Taiwan National Health Insurance Database. Patients not treated with statins during the first 90 days after the index stroke were matched to patients treated with statins in the first 90 days in a 2:1 ratio on the basis of age, sex, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, estimated National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale, use of anticoagulant, an...

Stroke Prevention - Medical and Lifestyle Measures
Background: According to the World Health Organization, stroke is the ‘incoming epidemic of the 21st century'. In light of recent data suggesting that 85% of all strokes may be preventable, strategies for prevention are moving to the forefront in stroke management. Summary: This review discusses the risk factors and provides evidence on the effective medical interventions and lifestyle modifications for optimal stroke prevention. Key Messages: Stroke risk can be substantially reduced using the medical measures that have been proven in many randomized trials, in combination with effective lifestyle modifications. The glob...

Factors predictive of hospice care in patients with Ischemic stroke (P1.077)
CONCLUSIONS: In our patient population, factors associated with hospice discharge were female gender, age > 70 years, prior stroke and not receiving thrombolysis and/ or intervention. Severity of deficits (NIHSS) was not a reliable marker. Study Supported by:Disclosure: Dr. Sultan has nothing to disclose. Dr. Lee has nothing to disclose.

Blood pressure control and risk profile in poststroke survivors: a comparison with the general population
Conclusion: We found a high prevalence and poor control of major cardiovascular risk factors in patients surviving their first-ever ischemic stroke, thus showing poor implementation of guidelines for secondary prevention in clinical practice.
