Acute kidney injury in acute coronary syndromes – An important multifactorial consequence
Conclusions AKI is an important finding in ACS, with a significant impact on hard clinical endpoints such as in-hospital and one-year mortality. It is associated with easily identifiable clinical factors and an invasive strategy does not increase its incidence.

Epidemiological characteristics, management and early outcomes of acute coronary syndromes in Greece: The PHAETHON study.
CONCLUSIONS: The PHAETHON study provided valuable insights into the epidemiology, management and outcome of ACS patients in Greece. Management of ACS resembles the management observed in other European countries. However, several issues still to be addressed by public authorities for the timely and proper management of ACS. Influence of undernutrition at admission on clinical outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction.
CONCLUSIONS: Nutritional status is a significant prognostic factor in clinical outcomes after MI during hospitalization. Therefore, nutritional assessment and intervention, especially for undernourished MI patients, should be considered. PMID: 27567176 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Is SYNTAX Score Predictive of Atrial Fibrillation after On-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery?
CONCLUSION: The SYNTAX score level was independently associated with the development of AF after CABG. PMID: 27826338 [PubMed - in process]

Impact of prior permanent pacemaker on long ‐term clinical outcomes of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention
Conclusions PPM has no effect on all‐cause mortality in patients undergoing first PCI but significantly increases the HF‐associated hospitalization rate, especially in ACS patients.

Contrast ‐induced encephalopathy following cardiac catheterization
ConclusionsCIE is an important clinical entity to consider in the differential diagnosis of stroke following cardiac catheterization. Given that prognosis is excellent with supportive management only, physicians should be aware of it, and consider it prior to initiating thrombolysis. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Energy efficiency and pulmonary artery flow after balloon pulmonary angioplasty for inoperable, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension: Analysis by phase-contrast MRI
Conclusion Analysis of PA energetics using phase-contrast MRI demonstrates that BPA improves energy loss in CTEPH. In addition, BPA responses can be predicted by PA energy status pre-treatment.

Clinical Outcomes in Diabetic Patients Who Underwent Percutaneous Coronary Intervention during the Plain Old Balloon Angioplasty (POBA)-, Bare Metal Stents (BMS)- and Drug-eluting Stents (DES)-eras from 1984 to 2010.
Conclusion The incidence of 3-year cardiovascular events decreased from 1984 to 2010 in patients with diabetes following PCI, despite the higher risk profiles in the DES-era. PMID: 28049984 [PubMed - in process]

The Impact of Age and Sex on In-Hospital Outcomes of Chronic Total Occlusion Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.
CONCLUSIONS: Older age, but not sex, is associated with lower technical success and higher in-hospital complication rate for CTO-PCI. CTO-PCI is relatively infrequently attempted in women, despite high technical success and acceptable complication rates. PMID: 28089997 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Predictors of Restenosis Following Carotid Angioplasty and Stenting
Restenosis after carotid angioplasty is associated with ipsilateral stroke occurrence. Hypertension, angioplasty without stent, and impaired vasoreactivity identify patients at high risk of restenosis and potentially could help select patients for follow-up ultrasound imaging.

Recurrent contrast ‐induced encephalopathy following coronary angiography
Contrast‐induced encephalopathy (CIE) is an acute and reversible neurological disturbance associated with the intra‐arterial administration of iodinated contrast medium during cardiac catheterisation. It may manifest with encephalopathy, motor and sensory disturbances; vision disturbances, including cortical blindness, ophthalmoplegia, aphasia; and seizures. Disruption of the blood–brain barrier and direct neuronal toxicity are believed to be implicated in the pathophysiology of the syndrome. Symptoms appear soon after contrast administration and resolve completely within 24–48 h. Risk factors may include hypertens...

Comorbidities and Complications in Nonagenarians Undergoing Coronary Angiography and Intervention.
Authors: Gayed M, Yadak N, Qamhia W, Daralammouri Y, Ohlow MA Abstract Elderly people represent the fastest growing portion of cardiovascular patients. We aimed to analyze the clinical presentation, risk factors, co-morbidities, complications, and mortality in patients 90 years or more who underwent coronary angiography and intervention. We retrospectively studied 108 (0.25% of 43,385) consecutive patients ≥ 90 years undergoing cardiac catheterization and/or intervention in a tertiary specialist hospital between 2003 and 2014.Most patients (68.5%) were introduced on an emergency basis, especially with acute corona...

Current Trends for ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction during the Past 5 Years in Rural Areas of China's Liaoning Province: A Multicenter Study.
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the great progress that has been made in guideline-recommended therapies, in-hospital outcomes among rural STEMI patients have not significantly improved. Therefore, there is still substantial room for improvement in the quality of care. PMID: 28345538 [PubMed - in process]

Cangrelor reduces the risk of ischemic complications in patients with single-vessel and multi-vessel disease undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention: Insights from the CHAMPION PHOENIX trial
Conclusion In the CHAMPION PHOENIX trial, MVD and SVD patients had similar ischemic outcomes at 48hours and 30days. Cangrelor consistently reduced ischemic complications in both SVD and MVD patients without a significant increase in GUSTO severe bleeding. Clinical perspectives What's known? Cangrelor is a novel, intravenous, potent, and rapidly acting P2Y12 inhibitor that has been demonstrated to reduce the rate of ischemic events at 48hours in patients who received PCI compared with clopidogrel. What's new? In contrast to prior studies, we found that in this modern cohort, patients with SVD and MVD had a similar risk of i...
