Risk Factors of Ischemic Stroke and Subsequent Outcome in Patients Receiving Hemodialysis Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Incidence of stroke is high in patients with ESRD on hemodialysis with high case-fatality. Incident hemodialysis patients had the highest stroke incidence. Many, but not all, important risk factors commonly associated with stroke in the general population were not associated with stroke in patients receiving hemodialysis.

Outcomes of Thrombolytic Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke in Dialysis Dependant Patients in the United States (S02.003)

Risk Factors and Outcomes of Cerebral Stroke in End-Stage Renal Disease Patients Receiving Hemodialysis
This study investigated the stroke features and risk factors in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Methods: All end-stage renal disease patients undergoing HD at Teraoka Memorial Hospital dialysis center were identified, with 195 recruited. Baseline clinical characteristics were collected, and the clinical outcomes and related factors of stroke in HD patients were retrospectively analyzed.

Reducing the Risk of Stroke in Patients with Impaired Renal Function: Nutritional Issues
Patients with renal failure have extremely high cardiovascular risk; in dialysis patients the risk of stroke is increased approximately 10-fold over that in the general population. Reasons include not only a high prevalence of traditional risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension and dyslipidemia, but also the accumulation of toxic substances that are eliminated by the kidneys, so have very high levels in patients with renal failure. Risk of Stroke in Long-term Dialysis Patients Compared With the General Population
Conclusions: Patients undergoing dialysis are at elevated risk of stroke. Patients undergoing PD appear to be less likely to develop hemorrhagic stroke than those undergoing HD. Comprehensive control of hypertension and diabetes is necessary when delivering dialysis treatment.

Abstract Beyond the original meaning of chronic kidney disease (CKD) as high-risk state for future dialysis, CKD is now known as an established risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Serum lipoprotein(a) and risk of hemorrhagic stroke among incident peritoneal dialysis patients: a large study from a single center in China.

Lack of Concordance between Empirical Scores and Physician Assessments of Stroke and Bleeding Risk in Atrial Fibrillation: Results from the Outcomes Registry for Better Informed Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation (ORBIT-AF) Registry.

The Impact of Acute Kidney Injury on the Long-term Risk of Stroke Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease
Conclusions The patients who recovered from AKI had a higher incidence of developing incident stroke and mortality than the patients without AKI, and the impact was similar to diabetes. Our results suggest that a public health initiative is needed to enhance postdischarge follow-up of renal function and to control the subsequent incidence of stroke among patients who recover from AKI after dialysis.

Impact of dialysis modality on the survival of patients with end-stage renal disease and prior stroke
Conclusions PD was associated with overall poorer survival among patients with diabetes, ESRD and prior stroke and with similar overall survival among patients with ESRD and prior stroke, but without diabetes, compared with HD.
