Incidence of Ischemic Stroke in Young Adults, a 4 Year Retrospective Review from an Urban Tertiary Care Center in North Philadelphia (P3.232)
Conclusions: The incidence of Ischemic Stroke in this cohort is much higher than that reported in other observational studies. Despite an extensive work up, a cause was not found in the majority of patients. These data support the need for a more in depth investigation of the causes of stroke in the young in urban, underserved communities. Standard of care diagnostic tests fail to explain the unusually high incidence of Ischemic Stroke in this cohort.Disclosure: Dr. Pirastehfar has nothing to disclose. Dr. Katz has nothing to disclose. Lifetime risk of stroke in young-aged and middle-aged Chinese population: the Chinese Multi-Provincial Cohort Study
Conclusion: In young-aged and middle-aged population, the lifetime stroke risk will keep very low if major risk factors especially blood pressure level is at optimal levels, but the risk substantially increases even with a slight elevation of major risk factors, which could not be identified using 10-year risk estimation.

Rapid transitions in the epidemiology of stroke and its risk factors in China from 2002 to 2013
Conclusions: In 2002–2013, the incidence of stroke in China increased rapidly. Combined with a high prevalence, a trend toward a younger age, and stable mortality, this finding suggests that additional clinical and behavioral interventions for metabolic and lifestyle risk factors are necessary to prevent stroke, particularly in certain populations.

The predictive role of CHA2DS2–VASc score between venous thromboembolism and ischemic stroke: a large-scale cohort study
Conclusion: Our study is the first to concern the performance of CHA2DS2–VASc score in predicting the risk of ischemic stroke in VTE patients and the risk of VTE in ischemic stroke patients. Nevertheless, the performance of the score was modest, and the transportability of the score in these populations still needs to be defined.

2021 Taiwan Stroke Society Guidelines of blood pressure control for ischemic stroke prevention
J Chin Med Assoc. 2022 May 2. doi: 10.1097/JCMA.0000000000000738. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of the present guideline is to update the 2015 Taiwan Stroke Society (TSS) blood pressure (BP) Control for Treatment and Prevention of Stroke guideline (2015 TSS BP guideline). Since the publication of the 2015 TSS BP guideline, several clinical studies have addressed (1) whether a stricter BP target would be more effective for stroke prevention, (2) whether the older population requires a different BP goal for stroke prevention, or (3) the effect of different stroke etiologies, particularly large-artery atherosclerosis ...

Microvascular Structure and Network in the Retina of Patients With Ischemic Stroke Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Patients with ischemic stroke have a sparser and more tortuous microvascular network in the retina. These findings provide insight into the structure and pattern of microcirculation changes in stroke.

Disparities in Stroke Type and Vascular Risk Factors Between 2 Hispanic Populations in Miami and Mexico City
Conclusions: We found significant differences in the frequency of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and atrial fibrillation in Miami Hispanics and Mexican stroke patients, highlighting the heterogeneity of the Hispanic ethnic group. Future studies are needed to clarify the relative contribution of genetic and environmental disparities amongst Mexican and Caribbean Hispanic stroke patients.

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Stroke in an Adult Population in a Rural Community in the Niger Delta, South-South Nigeria
This study aimed to determine the prevalence of stroke in a rural population in the Niger Delta region in south–south Nigeria and to describe known risk factors for stroke among them. A door-to-door stroke prevalence study was conducted in 2008 among randomly selected adults of 18 years or older in rural Kegbara-Dere community in Rivers State, south–south Nigeria. We administered a modified screening tool by the World Health Organization, a stroke-specific questionnaire, and conducted a physical/neurological examination (on persons screening positive) in 3 stages of assessments. The crude prevalence of stroke was 8.51...

Socioeconomic Position and Incidence of Ischemic Stroke in Denmark 2003-2012. A Nationwide Hospital-Based Study Stroke
Conclusions In Denmark, there is a strong relation between low socioeconomic position and risk for hospitalization for stroke. Lifestyle, as indicated by smoking, obesity, and alcohol consumption, and diabetes appears to increase the risk for stroke in people with lower socioeconomic position.

Prevalence of stroke symptoms among stroke‐free residents: first national data from Lebanon
ConclusionsThis is the first study conducted in the Middle East, assessing self‐reported stroke symptoms among stroke‐free residents. Our study showed that almost one in eight residents without a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack has had stroke symptoms. Major vascular risk factors are associated with these symptoms, thus allowing for prevention strategies.

Infection, vaccination, and childhood arterial ischemic stroke
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel to the brain is either blocked or ruptured. When blood to part of the brain is blocked, it causes what is called an ischemic stroke. Stroke is much more common in adults and the elderly. This is because fats and cholesterol can build up and block blood vessels as we age. Stroke is much less common in children. Stroke occurs in 11 per 100,000 children under the age of 18 every year.1 Still, it is one of the top 10 causes of death for children.2 We don't routinely expect children to have the major risk factors for atherosclerosis, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, an...

Pharmacogenetic Associations of {beta}1-Adrenergic Receptor Polymorphisms With Cardiovascular Outcomes in the SPS3 Trial (Secondary Prevention of Small Subcortical Strokes) Clinical Sciences
Conclusion—Among individuals with previous small artery ischemic stroke, the ADRB1 Gly49 polymorphism was associated with MACE, particularly small artery ischemic stroke, a risk that may be increased among β-blocker-treated individuals. Further research is needed to define β-blocker benefit among ischemic stroke patients by ADRB1 genotype.Clinical Trial Registration—URL: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. Unique identifier: NCT00059306.
