Association of black race with recurrent stroke risk (s4.001)
Conclusion: Recent ischemic stroke patients of Black race almost 60[percnt] more likely to experience a recurrent stroke within 2 years than their White race counterparts, but this risk is likely mediated through several stroke risk factors. These results underscore a need to optimize and sustain control of stroke risk factors among recent Black stroke patients.Disclosure: Dr. Park has nothing to disclose. Self-Reported Stroke Risk Stratification Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—A simple self-reported questionnaire can be used to identify those at high risk for stroke better than the gold standard FSRF. This instrument can be used clinically to easily identify individuals at high risk for stroke and also scientifically to identify a subpopulation enriched for stroke risk.

Leukoaraiosis and stroke recurrence risk in patients with and without atrial fibrillation
Conclusions:
Leukoaraiosis is an independent predictor of stroke recurrence in non-AF stroke patients. However, leukoaraiosis did not increase the accuracy of the CHADS2 and CHA2DS2-VASc scores to predict stroke recurrence in AF or non-AF stroke patients.

Association of Short-Term Use of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs With Stroke in Patients With Hypertension Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—
The results demonstrate an increased risk of stroke, specifically ischemic stroke among hypertensive subjects with NSAIDs use. It would be important to closely monitor the transient effect of initial NSAIDs treatment, particularly in patients with hypertension.

Prospective Study Of Acute Ischemic Stroke Sub-Types In A Teritiary Care Hospital In South India (P4.283)
Conclusion: The study contributes to understanding of demographic characteristics, risk factors and stroke-subtype in acute ischemic stroke. Like other studies LVA is the commonest subtype and intra-cranial vessels are commonly involved as in other Asian studies.Disclosure: Dr. Garuda has nothing to disclose. Abstract 206: Aiming to Improve Stroke Care Continuity with Primary Care Follow-up Appointments Scheduled Prior to Hospital Discharge Session Title: Poster Session II
Conclusions: Hospital performance with scheduling primary care follow-up appointments improved significantly; however, only 1 in 4 patients had an appointment scheduled prior to discharge. Case study analysis of missed opportunities may help identify barriers and facilitators associated with access, availability, and awareness that can be addressed in future improvement cycles.

Factors for short-term outcomes in patients with a minor stroke: results from China National Stroke Registry
In this study, we aimed to identify which factors were associated with adverse outcomes of a minor stroke.
Methods:
The China National Stroke Registry (CNSR) is a nationwide prospective registry for patients presented to hospitals with acute cerebrovascular events between September 2007 and August 2008. The 3-month follow-up was completed in 4669 patients with a minor stroke defined as the initial neurological severity lower than 4 in the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). Multivariate model was used to determine the association between risk factors and clinical outcomes.
Results:
Of 4669 patients with a m...

Importance of Considering Competing Risks in Time-to-Event Analyses: Application to Stroke Risk in a Retrospective Cohort Study of Elderly Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Original Articles
Conclusions:
The incidence of death without stroke was 9-fold higher than that of stroke, leading to biased estimates of stroke risk with traditional time-to-event methods. Statistical methods that appropriately account for competing risks should be used to mitigate this bias.

Diet Beverages Linked To Increased Stroke Risk & Heart Attacks
This study, as well as other research on the connection between diet beverages and vascular disease, is observational and cannot show cause and effect. That’s a major limitation, researchers say, as it’s impossible to determine whether the association is due to a specific artificial sweetener, a type of beverage or another hidden health issue.
“Postmenopausal women tend to have higher risk for vascular disease because they are lacking the protective effects of natural hormones,” North Carolina cardiologist Dr. Kevin Campbell said, which could contribute to increased risk for heart disease and stroke...

An epidemiological survey of stroke among rural Chinese adults results from the Liaoning province
ConclusionsThe annual incidence of stroke and resulting mortality has increased at an accelerated rate. Furthermore, the incidence of stroke in rural China was higher than that found in urban China and Western countries. Hypertension and lipid disorder were important modifiable risk factors. The primary sub‐type of stroke observed in rural China was ischemic stroke. These findings underscored the need for more aggressive efforts to control the risk factors of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases in rural areas.

Rates and predictors of risk of stroke and its subtypes in diabetes: a prospective observational study
Conclusions
Older people with a history of stroke were at highest risk of stroke, but the prognosis and prognostic factors of subtypes were heterogeneous. The results will help clinicians quantify the absolute risk of stroke and its subtypes for typical diabetes patients.

Lower systolic blood pressure is associated with poorer survival in long-term survivors of stroke
Conclusion:There was a greater risk of poor outcome in long-term survivors of stroke with low SBP. This is further evidence that low SBP may result in poor prognosis. Ideal blood pressure levels for long-term survivors of stroke may need to be reassessed.

Comparison of Ventricular Assist Device (VAD)-Related Stroke to the General Stroke Population: Associations with In-Hospital Mortality (P1.223)
Conclusions: Ischemic stroke in patients with VAD is associated with high in-hospital mortality. Although both older patients and women comprised a smaller percentage of VADWS than in the general stroke population, there was no age or sex association with mortality. While pre-existing CAD was more prevalent in VADWS, these patients had lower in-hospital mortality, possibly suggesting an additional unidentified subset with high mortality. Further study is needed to explore the associations between age, sex, and CAD in patients with VAD and ischemic stroke.Disclosure: Dr. Peters has nothing to disclose. Dr. Singh has nothing...
