Potassium Intake and Risk of Stroke in Women With Hypertension and Nonhypertension in the Women's Health Initiative Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— High potassium intake is associated with a lower risk of all stroke and ischemic stroke, as well as all-cause mortality in older women, particularly those who are not hypertensive.

Intravenous Thrombolysis for Stroke Recurring Within 3 Months From the Previous Event Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Patients currently treated with alteplase, despite a history of previous stroke ≤3 months, do not seem to achieve worse outcome than those with first-ever stroke. Although careful patient selection was probably of major importance, our findings provide reassurance that this group of patients may safely benefit from thrombolysis and should not be arbitrarily excluded as a whole. Further studies are needed to identify the shortest safe time lapse from the previous event to treatment with alteplase.

Tedium vitae in stroke survivors: a comparative cross-sectional study.
CONCLUSIONS: Tedium vitae is a common suicidal experience after stroke and may be among the earliest perceptible pointer to impending poststroke suicide. It is easy to assess and may be less costly to obtain an adequate sample size in studies aiming to understand the phenomenon of suicide in the stroke population. Physical Activity Frequency and Risk of Incident Stroke in a National US Study of Blacks and Whites Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Self-reported low PA frequency is associated with increased risk of incident stroke. Any effect of PA is likely to be mediated through reducing traditional risk factors.

Antihypertensive Drug Use, Blood Pressure Variability, and Incident Stroke Risk in Older Adults: Three-City Cohort Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— The angiotensin receptor blocker and β-blocker drug classes were associated with incident stroke and ischemic stroke in older adults. BPV was generally not associated with incident stroke.

Carotid Atherosclerosis and Stroke in Atrial Fibrillation: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study Brief Reports
Conclusions— Increased cIMT and presence of carotid plaque are associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke in individuals with AF. Furthermore, they may improve risk prediction of stroke, over and above the CHA2DS2-VASc score.

Blood Pressure, Carotid Flow Pulsatility, and the Risk of Stroke: A Community-Based Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— CSBP and common carotid PI jointly and independently predicted future stroke. Carotid flow pulsatility may play an important role in the development of stroke.

Stroke Incidence by Major Pathological Type and Ischemic Subtypes in the Auckland Regional Community Stroke Studies Clinical Sciences
Conclusions—A lack of change in IS and ICH incidence may reflect a trend toward increased incidence of younger strokes. Increased rates of large-artery atherosclerosis and small-vessel occlusion are associated with increased smoking and high blood pressure. Ethnic differences in the proportional distribution of pathological stroke subtypes suggest differential exposure and susceptibility to risk factors.

High Blood Pressure, Physical and Cognitive Function, and Risk of Stroke in the Oldest Old: The Leiden 85-Plus Study Original Contributions
Conclusions— Our findings suggest that impaired physical and cognitive function moderates the association between blood pressure and stroke.

Atrial Fibrillation, Stroke Risk, and Warfarin Therapy Revisited: A Population-Based Study Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— AF is more common than present guidelines suggest. The attributable risk of AF for ischemic stroke increases with age and is close to that of hypertension in individuals aged ≥80 years. Because a majority of patients with AF with increased risk for stroke had not received anticoagulation therapy, there is a large potential for improvement.

Hospitalization Within the First Year After Stroke: The Dijon Stroke Registry Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— Stroke survivors are at high risk of hospitalization after the episode, and subsequent admission is associated with poor survival, thus highlighting the need for follow-up interventions after discharge to prevent readmission.

Short-Term Blood Pressure Variability in Acute Stroke: Post Hoc Analysis of the Controlling Hypertension and Hypotension Immediately Post Stroke and Continue or Stop Post-Stroke Antihypertensives Collaborative Study Trials Clinical Sciences
Conclusions— When derived from casual cuff BP measures, short-term BPV is not a useful predictor of early (2 weeks) outcome after acute stroke. Differing methodology may account for the discordance with previous studies indicating long-term (casual BPV) and short-term (beat-to-beat BPV) prognostic value. Obesity Increases Risk of Ischemic Stroke in Young Adults Brief Reports
Conclusions— These results indicate that obesity is a risk factor for young onset ischemic stroke and suggest that this association may be partially mediated through hypertension, diabetes mellitus, or other variables associated with these conditions.

Short Leukocyte Telomere Length Is Associated With Cardioembolic Stroke Risk in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Brief Reports
Conclusions— Telomere shortening is associated with cardioembolic stroke risk in patients with AF. Prospective studies are encouraged to establish the value of LTL to improve prediction tools to categorize cardioembolic stroke risk in AF.
