Risk of stroke following antivenom use after venomous snakebite: correspondence
We read with great interest the epidemiological study by Hunget al.1 on the risk of stroke with antivenom use after venomous snakebite in Taiwan. According to the national medical claims data, the authors provide us with useful information and disclose that venomous snakebite is associated with an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke after the use of antivenom after using the matching propensity score in relevant measurable covariates. We strongly agree with the comments by Yehet al.2 on the unmeasured confounders associated with stroke in the present study. Furthermore, we are concerned that other residual confounders rel...

Prevalence and risk factors of retinal vein occlusion in the United States: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2005 to 2008
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2023 Feb 14;36(3):335-340. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2023.2173938. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTRetinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a rare, vision-threatening vascular disorder. Due to limited recovery associated with RVO, prevention is essential. There is a significant discrepancy in previously reported epidemiological studies in the United States on the prevalence and risk factors of RVO. The purpose of this retrospective, cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence and risk factors of RVO in adults ≥40 years of age in the US using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2...

Comment on: Dietary carbohydrate quantity and quality and risk of cardiovascular disease, all-cause, cardiovascular and cancer mortality: A systematic review and meta-analysis
We recently read an article published in Clinical Nutrition by Qin et  al., which qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed the relationship between the quantity and quality of dietary carbohydrates and cardiovascular disease risk, all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality in the form of a systematic review and meta-analysis. The authors concluded that increase d dietary carbohydrate intake was associated with increased cardiovascular disease, stroke, and all-cause mortality [1]. We congratulate the author on his very comprehensive work.

Association Between Blood Selenium Levels and Stroke: A Study Based on the NHANES (2011-2018)
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Apr 1. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03649-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAt present, the association between circulating selenium and stroke is still in dispute. Thus, this study aimed to ascertain the association with a larger sample size than the previous study, based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2018. In total, 13755 adults over the age of 20 years were included in our study. Multivariate logistic regression models were applied to analyze the correlation between blood selenium levels and stroke. The smooth curve fitting was performed to test the dos...
