Device use for proximal anastomosis on ascending aorta in off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting.
CONCLUSIONS: Clinical safety of Device use in CABG comparable to No-touch for mortality and morbidity. Hemostasis may be a key issue for accomplishing higher level quality control when devices used in proximal anastomosis of CABG. PMID: 33065052 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

First-in-Human Use of the COOK Hybrid Frozen Elephant Trunk Graft: The Canadian Experience.
CONCLUSIONS: The Cook hybrid stent-graft device provides encouraging mid-term results in a high-risk cohort. This novel graft is simple to deploy, may be customized to patients' anatomy in elective cases, eases arch reconstruction and allows versatility in the choice of arch grafts. Risk of Liver Dysfunction after Left Ventricular Assist Device Implantation.
CONCLUSIONS: RVSWI, RAP, CPBT, and UF were each more strongly associated with elevated risk of INT-LD after LVAD implant than Tbili. Thus, optimization of right ventricular hemodynamics and minimizing CBPT and UF could potential reduce the risk of LD, but these observations require prospective validation. Outcomes of current generation Transfemoral Balloon-Expandable versus Self-Expandable TAVR.
CONCLUSIONS: Mid-term outcomes of both valve types were comparable despite a higher risk of short term stroke for the SE cohort. Select patients may benefit from one valve type over another based on clinical and anatomic risk factors. PMID: 33045207 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Impact of Race on Outcomes of Revascularization for Multivessel Coronary Artery Disease.
CONCLUSIONS: Black patients with MVCAD have a higher comorbidity burden and undergo PCI at higher rates. After adjusting for baseline differences, black patients still had higher rates of PCI utilization and long-term stroke. It is possible that a significant portion of racial disparities in MVCAD are driven by differences in baseline risk, however, there is evidence of possible racial bias with regards to revascularization strategies. Is the use of BITA vs SITA grafting safe and beneficial in octogenarians?
CONCLUSIONS: This study shows equal long-term survival for BITA and SITA grafting in octogenarians. BITA is an acceptable alternative to SITA grafting in low-risk octogenarians and in the presence of calcified aorta or poor quality of saphenous vein graft. Benchmarking Outcomes: Reoperation for Aortic Valve Patient Prosthesis Mismatch.
CONCLUSIONS: Reoperative surgery for PPM is complex but may be performed with good outcomes and low mortality in experienced centers. These data provide excellent clinical and hemodynamic benchmarks for the treatment of PPM in the current era of valve-in-valve TAVR. PMID: 32980325 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Preparing for Bundled Payments: Impact of Complications Post-Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting on Costs.
CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative characteristics had less of an impact on costs post-CABG than postoperative complications. Postoperative complications vary in their impact on internal costs, with reoperation, stroke and renal failure having the greatest impact. In preparation for bundled payments, hospitals should focus on understanding and preventing drivers of high cost. PMID: 32896546 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Outcomes of tricuspid valve operation at the time of pericardiectomy for constrictive pericarditis.
CONCLUSIONS: Concomitant tricuspid valve operation for regurgitation can be done without increased operative mortality during pericardiectomy for constrictive pericarditis. Operation appears protective against long-term mortality, residual tricuspid regurgitation, and right ventricular enlargement. PMID: 32896543 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Early Postoperative Functional Assessment Predicts Non-home Discharge following Pulmonary Lobectomy.
CONCLUSIONS: Early postoperative functional impairment assessment using AM-PAC may be useful to predict of non-hospital discharge following pulmonary lobectomy. Attention to these factors may be used to aid early disposition planning, and adjust preventative strategies. PMID: 32891652 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Perceval sutureless aortic valve implantation: mid-term outcomes.
CONCLUSIONS: After more than 11 years of continued clinical use of the Perceval sutureless valve, we observe low mortality and stroke rates, with good hemodynamic behaviour of the valve. None of our patients was reoperated for SVD. Because of the key benefits of this rapid-deployment valve, it has an added value in surgical aortic valve replacement. Less-Invasive Aortic Valve Replacement: Trends and Outcomes from the STS Database.
CONCLUSIONS: LI-AVR is associated with a similar operative mortality and postoperative stroke rate compared to FS. LI-AVRS should be served as a benchmark for comparison between TAVR and sAVR in low risk patients. PMID: 32835750 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Impact of Hematologic Malignancies on Outcome of Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Although late survival is reduced in patients with hematologic malignancies, early outcomes are generally similar to matched controls. Thus, operation should not be withheld in patients with a diagnosis of hematologic malignancy who would benefit from cardiac procedures. PMID: 32822668 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

The Use of Frailty Scoring to Predict Early Physical Activity Levels Following Cardiac Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the predictive ability of objective frailty scoring and PA measurement for outcomes after cardiac surgery. This has important implications for surgical risk-stratification and personalized post-operative planning. PMID: 32818541 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Very long-term outcome of Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Bypass.
CONCLUSIONS: Very long-term clinical outcome of MIDCAB is satisfactory in terms of survival and freedom from MACCE. MIDCAB significantly reduces in-hospital stay and blood transfusions when compared to full sternotomy bypass surgery on left descending coronary artery and appears to effectively improve prognosis in terms of cardiac- and all-causes events.
