Gender Differences in Failure-to-Rescue After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting
CONCLUSIONS: Women who underwent isolated, non-emergent CABG had statistically similar frequencies of FTR compared to their male counterparts despite experiencing greater rates of morbidity and mortality. Further efforts to narrow the gender outcome gap after CABG should focus on preoperative and intraoperative phases of care instead of postoperative management.PMID:34774815 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.09.070

Processed EEG Use During Anesthesia and Outcomes: Analysis of the STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database
CONCLUSIONS: This large retrospective database study found no association between pEEG use during cardiac surgery and postoperative neurologic outcomes such as POD, stroke, encephalopathy, or coma. However, patients who underwent pEEG monitoring during anesthesia experienced higher mortality, even after adjustment for neurologic outcomes.PMID:34717905 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.09.049

Fifth Annual Pediatric Interagency Registry for Mechanical Circulatory Support (Pedimacs) Report
CONCLUSIONS: This Fifth Pedimacs Report demonstrates the continued robust growth of VADs in the pediatric community, now with over 1000 patients reported to the registry. The multiple available device types (PC, PP, IC) serve different populations with different pre-VAD risk profiles, which may account for differences in survival and AE between device types.PMID:34648810 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.10.001

Robotic Aortic Valve Replacement: First 50 Cases
CONCLUSIONS: RAVR appears to have procedural safety and short-term outcomes to rival alternatives. Incremental experience may facilitate the safe performance of concomitant procedures as deemed necessary.PMID:34560044 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.08.036

Early Discharge After Minimally Invasive Aortic and Mitral Valve Surgery
CONCLUSIONS: In well-selected patients, early discharge after minimally invasive valve surgery was associated with lower costs but comparable postoperative outcomes. About one fifth of patients who remain in the hospital beyond postoperative day 3 may be candidates for earlier discharge.PMID:34419437 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.07.047

Left Ventricle Mass Regression after Surgical or Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement in Veterans
CONCLUSIONS: SAVR patients were more likely to have LVMR and had a greater magnitude of LVMR than TAVR patients. LVMR was associated with better survival in SAVR patients, but not in TAVR patients.PMID:34416227 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.07.039

Real-World Outcomes of On- vs Off-Pump Coronary Bypass Surgery: Result from Korean Nationwide Cohort
CONCLUSIONS: In this contemporary, nationwide, clinical practice claim registry, off-pump CABG was associated with higher long-term risks of mortality, MI, and repeat revascularization than on-pump CABG.PMID:34400133 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.07.035

Failure to Rescue: A New Society of Thoracic Surgeons Quality Metric for Cardiac Surgery
CONCLUSIONS: A new risk-adjusted FTR metric has been developed which complements existing STS performance measures. The metric specifically assesses institutional effectiveness of postoperative care, allowing hospitals to target quality improvement efforts.PMID:34242640 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2021.06.025
