Levamisole-Induced Leukoencephalopathy in Russia: Analysis of 30 Cases
CONCLUSION: The differential diagnosis remains difficult for suspected cases of LEV-induced MIL that could lead to delayed therapy initiation, and consequently incomplete recovery. Growing evidence suggests that a single administration of levamisole even in low doses might potentially lead to severe neurological deficit or death. Therefore, changes in medication management policies are required in order to prevent uncontrolled use of levamisole.PMID:34951579 | DOI:10.2174/1574886317666211224121517

Genes, Vol. 12, Pages 1938: Examination of Genetic Variants Revealed from a Rat Model of Brain Ischemia in Patients with Ischemic Stroke: A Pilot Study
A. Limborska Although there has been great progress in understanding the genetic bases of ischemic stroke (IS), many of its aspects remain underexplored. These include the genetics of outcomes, as well as problems with the identification of real causative loci and their functional annotations. Therefore, analysis of the results obtained from animal models of brain ischemia could be helpful. We have developed a bioinformatic approach exploring single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in human orthologues of rat genes expressed differentially under conditions of induced brain ischemia. Using this approach, we identified a...

New Analyses Suggest Favorable Results for STELARA ® (ustekinumab) When Used as a First-Line Therapy for Bio-Naïve Patients with Moderately to Severely Active Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
SPRING HOUSE, PENNSYLVANIA, October 25, 2021 – The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson today announced data from two new analyses of STELARA® (ustekinumab) for the treatment of adults with moderately to severely active Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).1,2 In a modelled analysisa focused on treatment sequencing using data from randomized controlled trials, network meta-analysis and literature, results showed patient time spent in clinical remission or response was highest when STELARA was used as a first-line advanced therapy for bio-naïve patients with moderately to severely acti...

Modelling the impact of compliance fruit and vegetable intake recommendations on mortality in Russia
ConclusionsThe modelling illustrates the potentially large social benefits of compliance with national fruit and vegetable intake recommendations.Key messagesDespite strong evidence indicating that low fruit and vegetable intake relates to chronic diseases and mortality, most adults do not comply with dietary recommendations. The modelling illustrates the potentially large social benefits of compliance with national fruit and vegetable intake recommendations.

Exploring age-sex-specific all-cause mortality in Russia using the RLMS-HSE cohort study data
ConclusionsDeath numbers because of stroke are around the same among males and females. Deaths due to cardiac and neoplasms prevailed in males. Fatal cases due to injuries/accidents among males were more than twice that among females, same for murder/self-murders. The mean death age for cause-related to neoplasm, cardiac, and stroke was around as general population - 66, 69, and 72 years old, and was more than 80 years in senility/old age cause.Key messagesThe official statistics of mortality by Federal State Statistics Service and results getting from surveys are compatible with each other, therefore adequately reflecting...

Household availability of dietary fats and cardiovascular disease and mortality: prospective evidence from Russia
ConclusionOur results suggest that lard, a dietary fat of animal origin traditionally used in Eastern European cooking, is of a particular concern regarding CVD risk. Replacing it with plant-based oils in cooking practices is strongly recommended.

Heat shock proteins: a history of study in Russia
Cell Stress Chaperones. 2021 Jun 28. doi: 10.1007/s12192-021-01219-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis review describes a brief history of the discovery and studies in Russia and associated countries of the main stress protein (Hsp70) that plays important roles both in the normal function of the cell and body as well as under various stressful stimuli. Research on this protein at the Institute of Molecular Biology (Moscow) began with the elucidation of its adaptive functions at the cellular level and at the level of the whole organism. These studies examined the function of Hsp70 under normal and extreme conditions using...

The Influence of Personality Type D on Cardiovascular Prognosis in Patients After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting: Data from a 5-Year-Follow-up Study
ConclusionsType D patients had a greater risk for cardiac events over 5  years after CABG compared with non-type D patients. Obtained data indicates that it is reasonable to consider personality type while detecting patients at risk of development of stress induced cardiac complications after CABG.

Cutaneomeningospinal Angiomatosis (Cobb Syndrome) in a Young Patient
CNS Neurol Disord Drug Targets. 2021 Feb 17. doi: 10.2174/1871527320666210218083550. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCobb Syndrome (Spinal Arteriovenous Metameric Syndrome 1-31 (SAMS 1-31)) is a rare, non-hereditary disorder. Approximately 100 cases of CS have been described to date. The actual incidence may be much higher since only symptomatic patients were documented. In particular, post mortem studies suggest a possibly higher incidence of this syndrome. The main clinical manifestations of this syndrome include skin stains of vascular nature on the torso, in combination with spinal vascular malformations localized in one...

Low- and moderate-dose non-cancer effects of ionizing radiation in directly exposed individuals, especially circulatory and ocular diseases: a review of the epidemiology.
CONCLUSIONS: We document statistically significant excess risk of the major types of circulatory disease, specifically ischemic heart disease and stroke, in moderate- or low-dose exposed groups, with some not altogether consistent evidence suggesting dose response non-linearity, particularly for stroke. However, the patterns of risk reported are not straightforward. We also document evidence of excess risks at lower doses/dose-rates of posterior subcapsular and cortical cataract in the Chernobyl liquidators, US Radiologic Technologists and Russian Mayak nuclear workers, with fundamentally linear dose response. Nuclear cata...

Early-Term Complications after Carotid Endarterectomy and Their Risk Factors: Eight-Year Employment of Local Treatment Protocol of a Russian High-Volume Center
Conclusions: The present retrospective analysis of the local carotid surgery register showed appropriate outcomes after CEA regarding the cumulative incidence of MACE, which is comparable to previously published international register data. A previous history of stroke, myocardial infarction, COPD, a prolonged clamping time during CEA, and diabetes mellitus were found to be factors of high-risk for cardiovascular mortality. A prolonged clamping was identified as an independent predictor of any stroke.Eur Surg Res

Cerebrolysin for acute ischaemic stroke.
CONCLUSIONS: Moderate-quality evidence indicates that Cerebrolysin probably has little or no beneficial effect on preventing all-cause death in acute ischaemic stroke, or on the total number of people with serious adverse events. Moderate-quality evidence also indicates a potential increase in non-fatal serious adverse events with Cerebrolysin use. PMID: 32662068 [PubMed - in process]
