Older age and duration of exposure to type 2 diabetes in selective screening of asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis for primary stroke prevention —A single institution experience
Carotid artery disease is a well-known cause of stroke. In Malaysia, stroke is the third most common cause of death [1]. To our knowledge, there is still limited information regarding stroke and its associated risk factors. Strokes from ischemic infarction of the brain is due to narrowing or occlusion from local thrombosis or embolization of a proximal thrombus. The incidence of ischemic stroke from carotid artery stenosis in an asymptomatic western population is approximately 2.7% according to a report from Netherlands by Hartog et al.

Study results published this week in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Clinical Electrophysiology show that an investigational set of algorithms in Medtronic's Micra transcatheter pacing system (TPS) significantly improves synchrony and cardiac function in patients with impaired electrical conduction between the chambers of the heart, a condition called atrioventricular (AV) block.

Predictors of Quality of Life among Older People with Mild Cognitive Impairment Attending Urban Primary Care Clinics.
CONCLUSIONS: MCI was prevalent among study participants and were associated with poorer QOL in all domains of QOL. A better understanding of predictors of QOL in older people with MCI is deemed important.
CLINICAL IMPLICATION: Routine cognitive screening at primary care clinics will facilitate early recognition of MCI and facilitates referral to memory clinics for further assessment and treatment.

Atrial Transcriptional Profiles of Molecular Targets Mediating Electrophysiological Function in Aging and Pgc-1 β Deficient Murine Hearts
Conclusion: These findings limit the possible roles of gene transcriptional changes in previously reported age-dependent pro-arrhythmic electrophysiologial changes observed in Pgc-1β-/- atria to an altered Ca2+-ATPase (Atp2a2) expression. This directly parallels previously reported arrhythmic mechanism associated with p21-activated kinase type 1 deficiency. This could add to contributions from the direct physiological outcomes of mitochondrial dysfunction, whether through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production or altered Ca2+ homeostasis.

In conclusion, aqueous extracts of C. ferruginea leaves showed antimicrobial activity due to the presence of hydroquinone and caffeic acid methyl ester. This supports its traditional use for infections and confirmed that the active molecules are water-soluble.
