The effect of physical activity on mortality and cardiovascular disease in 130  000 people from 17 high-income, middle-income, and low-income countries: the PURE study
We examined whether different amounts and types of physical activity are associated with lower mortality and CVD in countries at different economic levels. Methods In this prospective cohort study, we recruited participants from 17 countries (Canada, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Poland, Turkey, Malaysia, South Africa, China, Colombia, Iran, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe). Within each country, urban and rural areas in and around selected cities and towns were identified to reflect the geographical diversity. Within these communities, we invited individuals aged between 35 and 70 years ...

Predictors of Quality of Life among Older People with Mild Cognitive Impairment Attending Urban Primary Care Clinics.
CONCLUSIONS: MCI was prevalent among study participants and were associated with poorer QOL in all domains of QOL. A better understanding of predictors of QOL in older people with MCI is deemed important. CLINICAL IMPLICATION: Routine cognitive screening at primary care clinics will facilitate early recognition of MCI and facilitates referral to memory clinics for further assessment and treatment. Screening for phaeochromocytoma in patients with acute cerebrovascular disease: Is it necessary?
CONCLUSION: We noted that CATS/METS were elevated in one-third of patients, especially in patients with high systolic blood pressure. Increase in CATS/METS should be appropriately followed up with repeat testing. Since false elevation in CATS/METS has been reported in cerebrovascular disease, screening for phaeochromocytoma is best deferred for a month. PMID: 32860372 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Association of traditional complementary and alternate medicine usage with quality of life of diabetic patients in a Malaysian tertiary hospital
This study aims to design to assess the traditional, complementary and alternate medicine (TCAM) usage and its association with the quality of life (QOL) of Type 2 diabetic patients in a tertiary hospital (Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia) in Malaysia. A total of 300 respondents included in this study were divided into the following two major categories: TCAM (34.33% of respondents) and non-TCAM users (65.67% of the respondents), respectively. The mean ages of the respondents were 59.3 ± 10.2 for the TCAM users and 57.7 ± 12.0 for the non-TCAM users. A greater percentage of non-TCAM users reported poor co...

Risk of serious adverse events after the BNT162b2, CoronaVac, and ChAdOx1 vaccines in Malaysia: A self-controlled case series study
CONCLUSION: This study shows acceptable safety profiles of COVID-19 vaccines among recipients of BNT162b2, CoronaVac, and ChAdOx1 vaccines. This information can be used together with effectiveness data for risk-benefit analysis of the vaccination program. Further surveillance with more data is required to assess AESIs following COVID-19 vaccination in short- and long-term.PMID:35667917 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2022.05.075

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 15746: Patient Outcomes following Immediate Tracheostomy and Emergency Decompressive Craniectomy in the Same Setting
In conclusion, compared to early tracheostomy, immediate tracheostomy in the same setting as emergency decompressive craniectomy is associated with a shorter duration of mechanical ventilation and LOS in critical-care units with acceptable morbidity and mortality rates. This practise could be used in busy centres with limited resources, such as those where mechanical ventilators, critical-care unit beds, or OT wait times are an issue.

Results of global fats and carbs study not very relevant for UK
Conclusion The results of the study have been presented in the media as if they overturn all current dietary guidelines. In the UK at least, that is completely misleading. The study results support the UK guidelines, having found that people who get around 50% of their calories from carbohydrates and 35% from fat, as recommended by Public Health England, were likely to live the longest. There are some limitations to the study, not least that observational studies cannot prove cause and effect. For example, the very low fat and high carbohydrate levels of diets found among some participants in the study might simply repres...

Isolation of Antimicrobial Compounds From Cnestis ferruginea Vahl ex. DC (Connaraceae) Leaves Through Bioassay-Guided Fractionation
Conclusion In conclusion, aqueous extracts of C. ferruginea leaves showed antimicrobial activity due to the presence of hydroquinone and caffeic acid methyl ester. This supports its traditional use for infections and confirmed that the active molecules are water-soluble. Author Contributions KK, SP, LVP, and WL conceived and designed the experiments. SP, KK, M-RY, and J-GL performed the experiments. SP, LVP, WL, M-RY, J-GL, and Z-HJ analyzed the data. WL and Z-HJ contributed reagents, materials, and analysis tools. Atrial Transcriptional Profiles of Molecular Targets Mediating Electrophysiological Function in Aging and Pgc-1 β Deficient Murine Hearts
Conclusion: These findings limit the possible roles of gene transcriptional changes in previously reported age-dependent pro-arrhythmic electrophysiologial changes observed in Pgc-1β-/- atria to an altered Ca2+-ATPase (Atp2a2) expression. This directly parallels previously reported arrhythmic mechanism associated with p21-activated kinase type 1 deficiency. This could add to contributions from the direct physiological outcomes of mitochondrial dysfunction, whether through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production or altered Ca2+ homeostasis. Introduction Atrial arrhythmias constitute a major public health pro...

Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (Cyto-MSC) are Well-tolerated and Associated with Renal Function Improvement in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease: An Observational Retrospective Study
Conclusion MethodologyThere were 4 clinical trials approved at the National University Malaysia in collaboration with Cytopeutics (Cyberjaya, Malaysia) which provided the mesenchymal stromal cells (Cyto-MSC) for treatment of acute stroke, heart failure, diabetes with critical limb ischemia and severe deforming osteoarthritis. All patients received 65-130 × 106 Cyto-MSC intravenously. Severity of chronic kidney disease is based on baseline estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and serum creatinine which are markers of renal dysfunction. These and other blood tests including fasting blood sugar (FBS) and Hba1c (ma...
