Combining transcranial ultrasound with intelligent communication methods to enhance the remote assessment and management of stroke patients: Framework for a technology demonstrator
With over 150,000 strokes in the United Kingdom every year, and more than 1 million living survivors, stroke is the third most common cause of death and the leading cause of severe physical disability among adults. A major challenge in administering timely treatment is determining whether the stroke is due to vascular blockage (ischaemic) or haemorrhage. For patients with ischaemic stroke, thrombolysis (i.e. pharmacological ‘clot-busting’) can improve outcomes when delivered swiftly after onset, and current National Health Service Quality Improvement Scotland guidelines are for thrombolytic therapy to be provid...

E-055 Endovascular Therapy for Patients with Acute Large MCA Territory Ischemia: Its Effect on the Risk of Subsequent Development of Deep Venous Thrombosis
ConclusionsIn patients with acute large MCA territory ischemia, endovascular recanalization therapy appeared to decrease the risk of developing subsequent DVT or PE. However, a larger sample size is needed to demonstrate statistical significance. Interestingly, majority of DVT were developed on the side of the extremity contralateral to the affected cerebral hemisphere.DisclosuresZ. Li: None. M. Cox: None.

O-012 Emergent Endovascular Management of Long-segment Carotid Artery Dissections in Acute Ischemic Stroke Intervention with Multiple Tandem Stents
ConclusionTandem stent reconstruction for the treatment of long segment and flow limiting carotid dissections is technically safe and effective with favorable clinical outcomes in acute ischemic stroke intervention, allowing for successful thrombectomy, vessel salvage, restoration of cerebral perfusion, and prevention of recurrent thromboembolic stroke.DisclosuresS. Upper extremity arterial thrombus presenting at birth
We report a 36-week neonate born to a 31-year-old G2P0 woman by emergency c-section due to decreased fetal movement. The pregnancy had been uncomplicated up to that point and the mother had no significant medical history. Birth weight was 2.49 kg. Apgars were 6 and 5. Superficial skin loss and dark blue discolouration were noted along the left upper extremity and hand immediately after delivery. Fluid resuscitation and sterile saline wraps slowly improved perfusion, and the extremity pinked up over the subsequent 3 h (figure 1). She was transferred to an appropriate outside facility where Doppler ultrasound revea...

Thrombus-Targeted Theranostic Microbubbles: A New Technology towards Concurrent Rapid Ultrasound Diagnosis and Bleeding-free Fibrinolytic Treatment of Thrombosis
Conclusions: We describe a novel theranostic technology enabling simultaneous diagnosis and treatment of thrombosis, as well as monitoring of success or failure of thrombolysis. This technology holds promise for major progress in rapid diagnosis and bleeding-free thrombolysis thereby potentially preventing the often devastating consequences of thrombotic disease in many patients.

In Vitro Evaluation of Focused Ultrasound-Enhanced TNK-Tissue Plasminogen Activator-Mediated Thrombolysis
The low and incomplete recanalization performance of thrombolytic therapy in patients with acute ischemic stroke has created the need to use focused ultrasound (FUS) energy as a way to enhance thrombolysis efficiency (sonothrombolysis). Using an in vitro flow model, the role of various parameters involved in FUS-enhanced tenecteplase (TNK-tPA [tissue plasminogen activator])-mediated thrombolysis was evaluated.

Microbubble-Mediated Sonothrombolysis Improves Outcome After Thrombotic Microembolism-Induced Acute Ischemic Stroke Basic Sciences
Conclusions— Microbubble-mediated sonothrombolysis improved the outcomes of microthrombi-induced acute ischemic stroke. Thus, this method may serve as an attractive adjunct to recanalization therapy for acute ischemic stroke.

Atrial Septal Defects and Cardioembolic Strokes
Atrial septal defects (ASDs) can be complicated by cardioembolic strokes, but the exact incidence is unknown. Patients with large and small shunts may present with a cardioembolic stroke. Patients with cryptogenic strokes should have cardiac ultrasound to see if an ASD is present. Cardioembolic strokes associated with ASD principally occur with 2 mechanisms. The first is paradoxic embolism involving a venous-based source of thrombus, which may subsequently pass through the ASD by right-to-left shunting, causing a cardioembolic stroke. The second is atrial fibrillation that can complicate the course of patients with ASDs, e...
