A modified murine photothrombotic stroke model: a minimally invasive and reproducible cortical and sub-cortical infarct volume and long-term deficits
In conclusion, this modified model helps to understand stroke pathogenesis and minimize the animals' numbers which help to increase the scientific and statistical potential in pre-clinical studies.PMID:37656197 | DOI:10.1007/s00221-023-06696-5

The specific VPAC2 agonist Bay 55-9837 increases neuronal damage and hemorrhagic transformation after stroke in type 2 diabetic rats
In conclusion, Bay 55-9837 did not show antidiabetic or antistroke efficacy in the type 2 diabetic GK rat. Contrarily, Bay 55-9837 treatment led to increased mortality and worsening of the severity of stroke.

63. Resting state cortical electroencephalographic rhythms in acute stroke patients
Patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson disease with dementia, and diffuse cerebrovascular dementia show different features of cortical sources of resting state electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms (Babiloni et al., 2004, 2011). Here, we tested the hypothesis that stroke patients are characterized by peculiar abnormalities of these rhythms. Resting state eyes-closed EEG data were recorded in 29 acute stroke, 29 Alzheimer’s disease, 29 mild cognitive impairment patients, and 29 cognitively intact elderly subjects. Stroke patients were age matched with the other groups, they showed a mild cognitive declin...

A male Fabry disease patient treated with intravenous thrombolysis for acute ischemic stroke
We report a 38-year-old man with acute aphasia and a left M2 segment of the middle cerebral artery thrombus with no recanalization who was finally diagnosed with Fabry disease after left ventricular hypertrophy of undetermined cause had been identified. A gene test revealed a R227X mutation typical of Fabry disease with the classical phenotype. To our knowledge our patient is the first reported male Fabry patient who was given intravenous thrombolytic therapy and the first reported Fabry patient who received intravenous thrombolytic therapy between 3 and 4.5hours of the symptom onset. Despite favorable prognostic indicator...

In-hospital outcomes of thrombolysis for acute ischemic stroke in patients with primary brain tumors
Publication date: March 2015 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, Volume 22, Issue 3 Author(s): Santosh B. Murthy , Yogesh Moradiya , Shreyansh Shah , Aditi Shastri , Eric M. Bershad , Jose I. Suarez Data on thrombolysis outcomes in patients with primary brain tumors are limited. Our aim was to study stroke outcomes following thrombolysis in these patients in a population-based study. Patients with acute ischemic stroke who received thrombolysis were identified from the 2002–2011 USA Nationwide Inpatient Sample. We compared demographics, comorbidities, and outcomes between primary brain tumor-associated strokes (BT...

Treatment of patients with mild acute ischemic stroke and associated large vessel occlusion
Publication date: Available online 3 April 2016 Source:Journal of Clinical Neuroscience Author(s): Russell Cerejo, Esteban Cheng-Ching, Ferdinand Hui, M. Shazam Hussain, Ken Uchino, Jennifer Bullen, Gabor Toth Several recent studies have shown that patients presenting with mild acute ischemic stroke (mAIS) symptoms may have an unfavorable natural history. The presence of associated large vessel occlusion (LVO) may lead to even worse outcomes, but most mAIS patients are still excluded from acute stroke treatment (AST). A retrospective review of patients with acute ischemic stroke presenting to our institution betwe...

Multicenter Study of Adverse Events After Intravenous Tissue-Type Plasminogen Activator Treatment of Acute Ischemic Stroke
Conclusion: Close monitoring during the first 12 hours after IV tPA treatment may be essential. However, close monitoring after 12 hours may not contribute significantly to improved patient outcomes. Larger studies may provide evidence for the safest and most efficient monitoring protocol for patients treated with IV tPA for ischemic stroke.

Cerebral small vessel disease and risk of incident stroke, dementia and depression, and all-cause mortality: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Publication date: Available online 13 April 2018 Source:Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews Author(s): S.P. Rensma, T.T. van Sloten, L.J. Launer, C.D.A. Stehouwer MRI features of cerebral small vessel disease, i.e. white matter hyperintensities, lacunes, microbleeds, perivascular spaces, and cerebral atrophy, may be associated with clinical events, but the strength of these associations remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the association between these features and incident ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke, all-cause dementia and depression, and all-cause mortality. For the asso...

Increased center of pressure trajectory of the finger during precision grip task in stroke patients.
Abstract The aim of this study was to assess the spatial stability of stroke patients while holding a freely movable object. Twenty-two acute stroke patients with mild hand impairment performed a grip and lift task using the thumb and index finger. The displacement of the center of pressure (COP) trajectory, the grip force (GF) and several clinical parameters were monitored. Although the GF was not different between paretic and nonparetic hands, the COP trajectory of the paretic index finger was increased. Moreover, the COP trajectories of the thumb and index finger in hemorrhagic patients were longer than those i...

Serum Uric Acid and Risk of Hemorrhagic Transformation in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke
AbstractUric acid (UA) is an antioxidant with neuroprotective effects in experimental stroke models. Whether serum UA plays a role in hemorrhagic transformation (HT) remains unclear. We aimed to explore the association between serum UA and HT in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). AIS patients within 7  days after stroke onset were consecutively enrolled between January 2016 and October 2017. Patients were categorized into three groups according to serum UA tertiles by sex. HT was detected by follow-up CT or MRI within 7 days after admission. The multivariate logistic analysis was performed to a ssess the associat...

Association between stress hyperglycemia and outcomes in patients with acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion
CONCLUSION: Stress hyperglycemia ratio, as measured by the glucose/HbA1C, was associated with a decreased odds of achieving a favorable functional outcome in patients with acute large vessel occlusion stroke at 90 days.PMID:36914967 | DOI:10.1111/cns.14163

Neuroinflammation in Acute Ischemic and Hemorrhagic Stroke
AbstractPurpose of ReviewThis review aims to provide an overview of neuroinflammation in ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, including recent findings on the mechanisms and cellular players involved in the inflammatory response to brain injury.Recent FindingsNeuroinflammation is a crucial process following acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and hemorrhagic stroke (HS). In AIS, neuroinflammation is initiated within minutes of the ischemia onset and continues for several days. In HS, neuroinflammation is initiated by blood byproducts in the subarachnoid space and/or brain parenchyma. In both cases, neuroinflammation is characterized b...

The emerging role of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 in cerebral ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke
Publication date: Available online 29 December 2015 Source:Progress in Neurobiology Author(s): Zhenxing Liang, Guiling Wu, Chongxi Fan, Jing Xu, Shuai Jiang, Xiaolong Yan, Shouyin Di, Zhiqiang Ma, Wei Hu, Yang Yang Signal transducers and activators of transcription (STATs) comprise a family of cytoplasmic transcription factors that mediate intracellular signaling. This signaling is typically generated at cell surface receptors, the activation of which results in the translocation of STATs to the nucleus. STATs are involved in biological events as diverse as embryonic development, programmed cell death, organoge...
