Impact of glazing on wear, fracture load, and optical properties of a new fully crystallized lithium disilicate ceramic material
CONCLUSIONS: The glazed fully crystallized LDS was superior to the partially crystallized one with regard to wear resistance but showed more color changes than the polished fully crystallized one. Furthermore, polishing of fully crystallized LDS could still be considered a better option than glazing when aesthetics is a primary prerequisite.PMID:37660448 | DOI:10.1016/j.jmbbm.2023.106102

Safety and efficacy of the epithelial sodium channel blocker idrevloride in people with primary ciliary dyskinesia (CLEAN-PCD): a multinational, phase 2, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial
Lancet Respir Med. 2023 Aug 31:S2213-2600(23)00226-6. doi: 10.1016/S2213-2600(23)00226-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Mucociliary clearance is dysfunctional in people with primary ciliary dyskinesia, resulting in the accumulation of dehydrated mucus in the airways that is difficult to clear. We undertook a study to assess the benefit on lung function of treatment with a nebulised epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) blocker, idrevloride, with or without hypertonic saline, in people with primary ciliary dyskinesia.METHODS: The CLEAN-PCD trial was a phase 2, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover tr...

Associations between anthropometric parameters and immune-phenotypical characteristics of circulating Tregs and serum cytokines
CONCLUSIONS: Anthropometric measures are associated with Tregs and serum cytokine concentrations revealing new important interconnections between obesity and the adaptive immune system.PMID:37659013 | DOI:10.1007/s00011-023-01777-1

Global Brassicaceae phylogeny based on filtering of 1,000-gene dataset
Curr Biol. 2023 Aug 28:S0960-9822(23)01069-2. doi: 10.1016/j.cub.2023.08.026. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe mustard family (Brassicaceae) is a scientifically and economically important family, containing the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana and numerous crop species that feed billions worldwide. Despite its relevance, most phylogenetic trees of the family are incompletely sampled and often contain poorly supported branches. Here, we present the most complete Brassicaceae genus-level family phylogenies to date (Brassicaceae Tree of Life or BrassiToL) based on nuclear (1,081 genes, 319 of the 349 genera; 57 of the 58 tri...

Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 7623: Utilizing Motion Capture Systems for Instrumenting the OCRA Index: A Study on Risk Classification for Upper Limb Work-Related Activities
a-Bastidas In the search to enhance ergonomic risk assessments for upper limb work-related activities, this study introduced and validated the efficiency of an inertial motion capture system, paired with a specialized platform that digitalized the OCRA index. Conducted in a semi-controlled environment, the proposed methodology was compared to traditional risk classification techniques using both inertial and optical motion capture systems. The inertial method encompassed 18 units in a Bluetooth Low Energy tree topology network for activity recording, subsequently analyzed for risk using the platform. Principal outcomes...

Rapid point-of-care detection of SARS-CoV-2 infection in exhaled breath using ion mobility spectrometry: a pilot study
ConclusionsDespite identifying several peaks by MCC-IMS with significant differences in peak intensity between PCR-negative and PCR-positive samples, finding a classification system that allows reliable differentiation between the two groups proved to be difficult. However, with some modifications to the setup, breath gas analysis using MCC-IMS may be a useful diagnostic toolbox for SARS-CoV-2 infection.Trial registration: This study was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov on September 21, 2020 (NCT04556318; Study-ID: HC-N-H-2004).

Oncological outcomes of standard versus prolonged time to surgery after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for oesophageal cancer in the multicentre randomised controlled NeoRes II trial
CONCLUSION: Prolonged time to surgery did not improve histological complete response or other pathological endpoints, while there was a strong trend towards worse survival, suggesting caution in routinely delaying surgery for more than six weeks after nCRT.PMID:37657554 | DOI:10.1016/j.annonc.2023.08.010

Electronic Patient-Reported Outcome Monitoring to Improve Quality of Life After Joint Replacement: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Clinical Trial
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this randomized clinical trial, the PROM-based monitoring intervention led to a small improvement in HRQOL and fatigue among patients with hip or knee replacement, as well as in depression among patients with hip replacement.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Deutsches Register Klinischer Studien ID: DRKS00019916.PMID:37656459 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2023.31301

Effects of combined exercises on shoulder mobility and strength of the upper extremities in breast cancer rehabilitation: a 3-week randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: A combined device-supported strength and mobility training (FIVE®) showed no advantages. Therefore, a variety of exercise methods is possible in exercise therapy of breast cancer patients.CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: Since the University of Education Weingarten does not assign clinical trial registration numbers or ethical approval numbers, none could be assigned for this study.PMID:37656241 | DOI:10.1007/s00520-023-07959-1

Therapeutic antibodies in rheumatology
Z Rheumatol. 2023 Sep 1. doi: 10.1007/s00393-023-01409-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmil von Behring's serum therapy for diphtheria was the first therapeutic use of antibodies. More than 100 years later, a new era in the treatment of rheumatic diseases began in 1998 with the approval of infliximab, an antibody directed against tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha). The special feature of antibody therapy is the ability to bind and neutralize antigens in a highly specific manner. In addition, target cells can be eliminated by activation of the immune system. These properties of the immune system are exploited in rheum...
