Therapeutic antibodies in rheumatology
Z Rheumatol. 2023 Sep 1. doi: 10.1007/s00393-023-01409-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEmil von Behring's serum therapy for diphtheria was the first therapeutic use of antibodies. More than 100 years later, a new era in the treatment of rheumatic diseases began in 1998 with the approval of infliximab, an antibody directed against tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha). The special feature of antibody therapy is the ability to bind and neutralize antigens in a highly specific manner. In addition, target cells can be eliminated by activation of the immune system. These properties of the immune system are exploited in rheum...

News at a glance: Moon landing, museum thefts, and gardening for conservation
SPACE SCIENCE Indian Moon lander begins search for ice India last week put a spacecraft on the Moon, making it the fourth nation to perform the feat, after the United States, the Soviet Union, and China. The $75 million, robotic Chandrayaan-3 mission is the first to explore a region near the lunar south pole, which is thought to hold frozen water that could be used to support human explorers. The area also contains large impact craters, which could hold clues to the history of the Solar System. Hours after landing, the craft released a solar-powered, suitcase-size rover that will study soil composition for a...

Gardens blooming with endangered plants could prove a boon to conservation
Looking to spruce up your garden or apartment balcony with a new plant? Consider an endangered species and you might help contribute to its conservation, according to researchers in Germany. Saving critically endangered plants will require unorthodox solutions like these, says Doug Tallamy, an entomologist and wildlife ecologist at the University of Delaware who wasn’t involved with the work. “We’re in the midst of the Earth’s sixth great extinction event. We have parks and preserves, but they’re not good enough. So, we have to practice conservation outside of those.” For years, conservationists have ...

PsoBarrier EU study: a Multicentre, Cross-sectional Survey Investigating the Quality of Psoriasis Care in Four European Countries
Acta Derm Venereol. 2023 Aug 31;103:adv6532. doi: 10.2340/actadv.v103.6532.ABSTRACTEnhanced treatment options for psoriasis and growing use of guidelines increased the potential to better quality of psoriasis care in Europe. The aim of the PsoBarrier EU study is to compare the quality and processes of psoriasis care in four European countries with different healthcare systems, based on validated quality indicators. This cross-sectional survey was conducted in dermatology centres in Denmark, Germany, Poland and Spain on 1,304 patients, using standardized patient and physician questionnaires. Measured by quality of psoriasis...

Machine translation of standardised medical terminology using natural language processing: A Scoping Review
N Biotechnol. 2023 Aug 29:S1871-6784(23)00043-2. doi: 10.1016/j.nbt.2023.08.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStandardised medical terminologies are used to ensure accurate and consistent communication of information and to facilitate data exchange. Currently, many terminologies are only available in English, which hinders international research and automated processing of medical data. Natural language processing (NLP) and Machine Translation (MT) methods can be used to automatically translate these terms. This scoping review examines the research on automated translation of standardised medical terminology. A search was...

Irrelevant interests? A qualitative study into how German family surrogates of persons living with dementia fulfill their legal role as advocates of an advance directive
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATION: Our findings lead us to critique the legal construction of family surrogates as advocates of the AD. Family members are directly and enduringly affected by the end-of-life care decisions that the AD sets out and are thus no neutral agents who have no stake in the matter. Expecting them to simply transmit decisions formulated in the AD means expecting them to render their own interests irrelevant - which, arguably, might be too much to ask.PMID:37650918 | DOI:10.1093/geront/gnad119
