Accuracy of a Glycerol Dehydrogenase Assay for Ethylene Glycol Detection
CONCLUSIONS: The GDH assay provides a sensitive and specific method for the detection and quantification of EG that is comparable to a GC-based method. More widespread use of this rapid, inexpensive assay could improve the care of patients with suspected toxic alcohol exposure. Further study is needed to evaluate the test performance in real-time patient treatment decisions.PMID:37695470 | DOI:10.1007/s13181-023-00967-x

Clinical, Gender, Socioeconomic Characteristics and Outcomes of Individuals Receiving Hepatitis B Treatment in Ethiopia: 18-Month Follow-Up
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2023 Sep 11:tpmd230236. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.23-0236. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThere is a lack of real-world data on hepatitis B (HBV) treatment in Africa. We conducted a single-center 18-month prospective cohort study in Ethiopia to understand clinical, laboratory, and demographic variables associated with HBV treatment. One hundred fifty HBV-positive patients were included: 51 on treatment, 99 with no treatment. Median age was similar between groups. Those on treatment were more likely to be male (86%), report higher coffee intake (90% versus 70%, P < 0.05), lower khat intake (0% versus 9%, P = 0...

Dietary habits among snus users: a population-based cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: We observed that snus users had an unhealthier diet than never tobacco users. Future studies on the association between snus use and health outcomes should, therefore, consider diet as a potential confounder.PMID:37691745 | PMC:PMC10492228 | DOI:10.29219/fnr.v67.9537

The influence of various endocrine disruptors on the reproductive system
This article presents the current state of knowledge of the effect of EDCs and additional factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and cannabis on the gonads. The article is an overview of the impact of EDCs and their mechanism of action, with particular emphasis on gonads, based on databases such as PubMed, EMBASE and Google Scholar, and Web of Science available until May 2022. The impact of human exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) is not fully understood, but it has been shown that phthalates show a negative correlation in anti-androgenic activity in the case of men and women for the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH). Smokin...

Folium crataegi boosts skin regeneration for burn injury in rats through multiple ways
In conclusion, this research illustrated that the folium crataegi extract, especially aqueous extracts, had better therapeutic effects on skin burns through multiple ways, possibly including a novel mechanism related to circadian rhythm pathway. These findings suggest that folium crataegi could be a valuable source of compounds for enhancing skin regeneration through multiple ways.PMID:37690389 | DOI:10.1016/j.biopha.2023.115457

Is teacher violence a form of betrayal trauma? Relationship with mental health problems among young adults
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings expand the application of the betrayal trauma theory to school settings and point to the importance of preventing and managing teacher violence. It is important to provide more support and training to teachers and enhance monitoring measures in schools. More research on the prevalence and correlates of exposure to teacher violence is needed. We also provided first evidence supporting the reliability and validity of the English version of the TVS to facilitate future research.PMID:37690435 | DOI:10.1016/j.chiabu.2023.106436

Community reentry: Racial/ethnic differences in unmet needs among adults with co-occurring opioid use and mental health disorder
CONCLUSIONS: While re-entry is a vulnerable period for all adults with COD, this paper identifies specific needs by race/ethnicity and proposes strategies to advance equity and improve care for all formerly incarcerated adults with a COD.PMID:37690361 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijlp.2023.101924

Opioid and benzodiazepine misuse in the United States: The impact of socio-demographic characteristics
CONCLUSION AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: A large portion of US adults are misusing opioids, benzodiazepines, and both drugs. Specifically, bisexual individuals experience higher odds of opioid misuse, benzodiazepine misuse and misuse of both drugs compared with heterosexuals, while males are experiencing lower odds of benzodiazepine misuse compared with females. Individuals aged 26-49 experience the highest odds of opioid misuse, though misuse of both drugs was higher among the 18-25 age group. Findings underscore the use of targeted preventive measures to reduce misuse of these drugs among at-risk populations identified in...

Alcohol and cannabis dual use among Black adults: Associations with alcohol use, use-related problems, and race-based discrimination
CONCLUSIONS: The use of cannabis among Black young adults who drink alcohol was related to heavier drinking and more alcohol-related problems. Further, experiencing more microaggressions may place these individuals at risk for using multiple substances, presumably to cope with these experiences.SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: Considering models suggesting that the dual use of cannabis may result in less alcohol use, the current study highlights that for Black adults who consume alcohol, cannabis dual use is related to heavier drinking and more alcohol-related problems, which can inform intervention and treatment efforts.PMID:3768...

Identification of novel dithiocarbamate-copper complexes targeting p97/NPL4 pathway in cancer cells
Eur J Med Chem. 2023 Sep 4;261:115790. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmech.2023.115790. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDithiocarbamates (DTCs) are simple organic compounds with many applications in industry and medicine. They are potent metal chelators forming complexes with various metal ions, including copper. Recently, bis(diethyldithiocarbamate)-copper complex (CuET) has been identified as a metabolic product of the anti-alcoholic drug Antabuse (disulfiram, DSF), standing behind DSF's reported anticancer activity. Mechanistically, CuET in cells causes aggregation of NPL4 protein, an essential cofactor of the p97 segregase, an integra...
