Community reentry: Racial/ethnic differences in unmet needs among adults with co-occurring opioid use and mental health disorder
CONCLUSIONS: While re-entry is a vulnerable period for all adults with COD, this paper identifies specific needs by race/ethnicity and proposes strategies to advance equity and improve care for all formerly incarcerated adults with a COD.PMID:37690361 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijlp.2023.101924

Alcohol and cannabis dual use among Black adults: Associations with alcohol use, use-related problems, and race-based discrimination
CONCLUSIONS: The use of cannabis among Black young adults who drink alcohol was related to heavier drinking and more alcohol-related problems. Further, experiencing more microaggressions may place these individuals at risk for using multiple substances, presumably to cope with these experiences.SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: Considering models suggesting that the dual use of cannabis may result in less alcohol use, the current study highlights that for Black adults who consume alcohol, cannabis dual use is related to heavier drinking and more alcohol-related problems, which can inform intervention and treatment efforts.PMID:3768...

Opioid and benzodiazepine misuse in the United States: The impact of socio-demographic characteristics
CONCLUSION AND SCIENTIFIC SIGNIFICANCE: A large portion of US adults are misusing opioids, benzodiazepines, and both drugs. Specifically, bisexual individuals experience higher odds of opioid misuse, benzodiazepine misuse and misuse of both drugs compared with heterosexuals, while males are experiencing lower odds of benzodiazepine misuse compared with females. Individuals aged 26-49 experience the highest odds of opioid misuse, though misuse of both drugs was higher among the 18-25 age group. Findings underscore the use of targeted preventive measures to reduce misuse of these drugs among at-risk populations identified in...

Impact of pictorial warning labels on meat meal selection: A randomised experimental study with UK meat consumers
Appetite. 2023 Sep 7:107026. doi: 10.1016/j.appet.2023.107026. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMeat consumption has been linked to adverse health consequences, worsening climate change, and the risk of pandemics. Meat is however a popular food product and dissuading people from consuming meat has proven difficult. Outside the realm of meat consumption, previous research has shown that pictorial warning labels are effective at curbing tobacco smoking and reducing the consumption of sugary drinks and alcohol. The present research extends this work to hypothetical meat meal selection, using an online decision-making task to tes...

Plasmon-Induced Radical-Radical Heterocoupling Boosts Photodriven Oxidative Esterification of Benzyl Alcohol over Nitrogen-Doped Carbon-Encapsulated Cobalt Nanoparticles
Angew Chem Int Ed Engl. 2023 Sep 8:e202312808. doi: 10.1002/anie.202312808. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSelective oxidation of alcohols under mild conditions remains a long-standing challenge in the bulk and fine chemical industry, which usually requires environmentally unfriendly oxidants and bases that are difficult to separate. Here, a plasmonic catalyst of nitrogen-doped carbon-encapsulated metallic Co nanoparticles (Co@NC) with an excellent catalytic activity towards selective oxidation of alcohols is demonstrated. With light as only energy input, the plasmonic Co@NC catalyst effectively operates via combining actio...
