Sensation seeking, drinking motives, and going out mediate the link between eveningness and alcohol use and problems in adolescence
Chronobiol Int. 2023 Sep 18:1-11. doi: 10.1080/07420528.2023.2256396. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe present study was aimed at obtaining a more comprehensive understanding of the possible mediating factors in the morningness-eveningness → alcohol consumption relation. We explored the role of mediators such as sensation seeking, the frequency of going out in the evenings, and drinking motives. We tested the proposed mediation model via structural equation modeling based on cross-sectional research conducted among Hungarian adolescents and young adults (N = 1695, 42.5% male, Mage = 18.98, SDage = 1.89). The outcomes in...

Preparation of blast furnace dust particle electrodes and their application in synergistic electrochemical degradation of saline polyvinyl alcohol wastewater
Environ Pollut. 2023 Sep 16:122574. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2023.122574. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPolyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been widely used as a water-soluble plastic in laundry and dish detergent pods, yet wastewater contaminated with PVA is too difficult to be treated due to its high salinity and foaming. Here, we fabricated blast furnace dust (BFD) particle electrodes, and developed a three-dimensional electrocatalytic system (3DEC) to treat saline PVA wastewater. The optimum preparation condition for BFD particle electrode was iron carbon ratio of 2:1 doping with TiO2. The optimal parameters of 3DECs for PVA wast...

CRISPR/Cas9-mediated deletion of adipocyte genes associated with NAFLD alters adipocyte lipid handling and reduces steatosis in hepatocytes < em > in vitro < /em >
Am J Physiol Cell Physiol. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1152/ajpcell.00291.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTObesity is a major risk factor for the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the subcutaneous white adipose tissue (scWAT) is the primary lipid storage depot and regulates lipid fluxes to other organs. Our previous work identified genes up-regulated in scWAT of patients with NAFLD: SOCS3, DUSP1, and SIK1. Herein, we knocked down (KD) their expression in human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hADMSCs) using CRISPR/Cas9 technology and characterized their phenotype. We found that SOCS3, DUSP1, a...

Green preparation of magnetic ferroferric oxide-polyvinyl alcohol-alginate coated UiO-67 nanospheres: Characterization, adsorption properties and adsorption mechanism of methylene blue
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Sep 16;253(Pt 3):126967. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.126967. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn this paper, a kind of magnetic ferric oxide/polyvinyl alcohol/calcium alginate/UiO-67 (Fe3O4/PVA/CA/UiO-67) nanospheres with homogeneous surface interconnecting structures was prepared by using macromolecular polymer polyvinyl alcohol and sodium alginate as carriers and zirconium organic skeleton as nanocrystals. The properties of magnetic nanospheres were studied by SEM, FT-IR, TGA, XRD, BET, VSM and Zeta potential. The impression of diverse temperatures, MB concentrations, interaction time, pH, and mag...

Disulfiram-Like Reaction With Ginaton: A Case Report and Literature Review
This article details such a case from China. Healthcare providers should be proactive in educating patients about the potential adverse reactions related to using Ginaton and the importance of avoiding alcohol consumption while using it. Patients should also be advised to disclose their alcohol-consumption habits and seek medical advice before initiating treatment with any medication or supplement during treatment with Ginaton.PMID:37722955 | DOI:10.1016/j.clinthera.2023.08.013

Covalent Capture and Selection of DNA-Encoded Chemical Libraries via Photo-Activated Lysine-Selective Crosslinkers
Chem Asian J. 2023 Sep 18:e202300652. doi: 10.1002/asia.202300652. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCovalent crosslinking probes have arisen as efficient toolkits to capture and elucidate biomolecular interaction networks. Exploiting the potential of crosslinking in DNA-encoded chemical library (DEL) selection methods significantly boosted bioactive ligand discovery in complex physiological contexts. Herein, we incorporated o-nitrobenzyl alcohol (o-NBA) as a photo-activated lysine-selective crosslinker into divergent DEL formats and achieved covalent capture of ligand-target interactions featuring improved crosslinking effici...

The risk of road traffic crashes for occupational drivers: A responsibility study with comparison to the general population
CONCLUSION: On-duty drivers showed lower risk of responsibility for an accident than other drivers. However, on-duty drivers on temporary or work/study contracts, who are usually not subject to specific regulations, showed higher risk, and should be the subject of particular attention regarding occupational risk prevention.PMID:37718828 | DOI:10.3233/WOR-220578

Are ride-hailing services safer than taxis? A multivariate spatial approach with accommodation of exposure uncertainty
Accid Anal Prev. 2023 Sep 15;193:107281. doi: 10.1016/j.aap.2023.107281. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDespite many research efforts on ride-hailing services and taxis, limited studies have compared the safety performance of the two modes. A major challenge is the need for reliable mode-specific exposure data to model their safety outcomes. Moreover, crash frequencies of the two modes by injury severities tend to be spatially and inherently correlated. To fully address these issues, this study proposes a novel multivariate conditional autoregressive model considering measurement errors in mode-specific exposures (MVCARME)....

Preparation and characterization of polyvinyl alcohol/sodium lignosulfonate/black rice anthocyanin extract agricultural film for monitoring soil pH
This study focuses on the formulation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based films with pH-sensitive properties and ultraviolet (UV) resistance by incorporating sodium lignosulfonate (LS) and varying concentrations of black rice anthocyanin extract (BRE) into PVA matrix. The films were characterized through Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), tensile test, water vapor permeability (WVP), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. The results indicated that BRE and LS effectively formed strong hydrogen bonds with PVA, leading to reduced film crystallinity, improved mechanical properties, ...
