Comparison of various prediction models in the effect of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass on type 2 diabetes in the Chinese population 5 years after surgery
CONCLUSIONS: T2D was relieved to varying degrees 5 years after RYGB in patients with obesity. The prediction models in ABCD and the Panuzi et al. [34] studies showed the best prediction effects. ABCD was recommended for clinical use because of excellent predictive performance, good statistical test results, and simple and practical design features.PMID:37716844 | DOI:10.1016/j.soard.2023.05.012

Multi-element Exposure and Cognitive Function in Rural Elderly Chinese
Biol Trace Elem Res. 2023 Sep 16. doi: 10.1007/s12011-023-03774-1. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo investigate the relationship between selenium (Se) based multi-element combined exposure and cognitive function in rural elderly individuals, a cross-sectional study was conducted. The study involved 416 older adults aged 60 and above, residing in four different areas of Enshi county, China, with varying soil Se levels. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was employed to measure the concentrations of Se, copper (Cu), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and lead (P...

Metagenome-assembled genomes reveal carbohydrate degradation and element metabolism of microorganisms inhabiting Tengchong hot springs, China
Environ Res. 2023 Sep 15;238(Pt 1):117144. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2023.117144. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA hot spring is a distinctive aquatic environment that provides an excellent system to investigate microorganisms and their function in elemental cycling processes. Previous studies of terrestrial hot springs have been mostly focused on the microbial community, one special phylum or category, or genes involved in a particular metabolic step, while little is known about the overall functional metabolic profiles of microorganisms inhabiting the terrestrial hot springs. Here, we analyzed the microbial community structur...

An interval water demand prediction method to reduce uncertainty: A case study of Sichuan Province, China
In this study, we constructed a GA-BP-KDE hybrid interval water demand prediction model by combining non-parametric estimation and point prediction. Multiple metaheuristic algorithms were used to optimize the Back-Propagation Neural Network (BP) and Kernel Extreme Learning Machine (KELM) network structures. The performance of the water demand point prediction models was compared by the Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Kling-Gupta Efficiency (KGE), computation time, and fitness convergence curves. The kernel density estimation method (KDE) and the normal distribution method were used to...

Prevalence and predictors of vitamin D deficiency among adults with epilepsy: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSION: Vitamin D deficiency among PWE is prevalent in our local population, suggesting that regular screening should be considered for those at risk. Early identification would allow intervention to reduce the risk of future complications.PMID:37716324 | DOI:10.1016/j.yebeh.2023.109432

A foot structure study of new arch flexibility grading system based on three-dimensional arch volume
CONCLUSION: In cavus, rectus, and planus, different AVF accounts different percentage, but the difference is not statistically significant. AVF is evenly distributed in the arches of the feet at different heights. We further found the relationship between AHF and AVF is not significant. As a three-dimensional index, AVF may be able to describe the flexibility of the arch more comprehensively than AHF.PMID:37716873 | DOI:10.1016/j.cjtee.2023.09.002

Effect of c.1431C & gt;T mutation, a causative mutation of Glanzmann's thrombasthenia, on ITGB3 splicing, gene and protein expression
CONCLUSION: Due to its significant impact on protein expression, c.1431C>T mutation in ITGB3 could be considered a pathogenic variant of GT. This could enrich the ITGB3 mutation spectrum and provide a base for the genetic diagnosis of GT.PMID:37716584 | DOI:10.1016/j.gene.2023.147805

Revisiting the academic self-concept transcultural measurement model: The case of Spain and China
CONCLUSION: These two differences may be behind the difficulty in finding invariance using SEM models. It is a question of the construct's nature, less related to analytical phenomena, and deserves deeper discussion.PMID:37715352 | DOI:10.1111/bjep.12635

Novel MEIOB pathogenic variants including a homozygous non-canonical splicing variant, cause meiotic arrest and human non-obstructive azoospermia
In this study, we identified novel compound heterozygous MEIOB variants (c.814C > T: p.R272X and c.976G > A: p.A326T) and a previously undescribed homozygous non-canonical splicing variant of MEIOB (c.528 + 3A > C) in two NOA-affected individuals from two irrelevant Chinese families. MEIOB missense variant (p.A326T) significantly reduced protein abundance and nonsense variant (p.R272X) produced a truncated protein. Both of two variants impaired the MEIOB-SPATA22 interaction. The MEIOB non-canonical splicing variant resulted in whole Exon 6 skipping by minigene assay, which was predicted to produce a frameshift tru...

In situ effects of microplastics on the decomposition of aquatic macrophyte litter in eutrophic shallow lake sediments, China
Environ Pollut. 2023 Sep 14:122543. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2023.122543. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe toxicity of microplastics (MPs) to aquatic organisms has been extensively studied recently. However, few studies have investigated the effects of MPs in sediments on aquatic ecosystem functioning. In the present study, we conducted an in situ experiment to explore the concentration-dependent effects (0.025%, 0.25%, 2.5%) and size-dependent effects (150-300 μm and 500-1000 μm) of polypropylene microplastics (PP MPs) on Vallisneria natans litter decomposition dynamics, in particular, the process associated with macroinv...
