Novel Immunopharmacological Drugs for the Treatment of Allergic Diseases
Annu Rev Pharmacol Toxicol. 2023 Sep 18. doi: 10.1146/annurev-pharmtox-051623-091038. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe exponential rise in the prevalence of allergic diseases since the mid-twentieth century has led to a genuine public health emergency and has also fostered major progress in research on the underlying mechanisms and potential treatments. The management of allergic diseases benefits from the biological revolution, with an array of novel immunomodulatory therapeutic and investigational tools targeting players of allergic inflammation at distinct pathophysiological steps. Prominent examples include therapeuti...

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 4619: Repurposing Clemastine to Target Glioblastoma Cell Stemness
hristopher J. Pirozzi Yiping He Brain tumor-initiating cells (BTICs) and tumor cell plasticity promote glioblastoma (GBM) progression. Here, we demonstrate that clemastine, an over-the-counter drug for treating hay fever and allergy symptoms, effectively attenuated the stemness and suppressed the propagation of primary BTIC cultures bearing PDGFRA amplification. These effects on BTICs were accompanied by altered gene expression profiling indicative of their more differentiated states, resonating with the activity of clemastine in promoting the differentiation of normal oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) into mat...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 6684: Microfluidic Analysis for the Determination of Protein Content in Different Types of Plant-Based Drinks
a Makszin The widespread consumption of plant-based drinks, driven by health and dietary reasons (including cow’s milk allergy, lactose intolerance, milk protein intolerance, following a vegetarian or vegan diet) necessitates automated and accurate test methods. Our study demonstrates the simultaneous determination of protein components and total protein concentrations in plant-based milk alternatives using a rapid and reproducible microchip gel electrophoretic method. As expected, the electrophoretic profiles of each plant-based drink differed. Based on our analyses and statistical evaluation, it can be ...

Acquired angioedema due to C1-inhibitor-deficiency (AAE-C1-INH) - a bi-center retrospective study on diagnosis, course and therapy
CONCLUSION: AAE-C1-INH is characterized by late onset swellings mainly involving the face and low C1-INH levels. Diagnostic delay for AAE-C1-INH is further decreasing despite being about 10-fold rarer than HAE. Patients severely affected without underlying condition or no indication for treatment could benefit from off-label therapy.PMID:37716525 | DOI:10.1016/j.jaip.2023.09.003

Endoscopic vidian and vidian ‐branch neurectomy for refractory allergic rhinitis: A systematic review
ConclusionEVN and vidian-branch neurectomy (including SVN and PNN) are effective treatments, but the former has a higher risk of complications. Additionally, vidian-branch neurectomy with FESS is beneficial for patients with mixed CRSwNP. SVN is a potential approach for patients with coexisting AR and asthma.
