The role of glycosylation in clinical allergy and immunology
While glycans are among the most abundant macromolecules on the cell with widespread functions, their role in immunity has historically been challenging to study. This is in part due to difficulties assimilating glycan analysis into routine approaches used to interrogate immune cell function. Despite this, recent developments have illuminated fundamental roles for glycans in host immunity. The growing field of glycoimmunology continues to leverage new tools and approaches to uncover the function of glycans and glycan-binding proteins in immunity.

With the Decongestant SNAFU, the FDA Tries Something New
It’s easy to understand how a medicine like phenylephrine got onto pharmacy shelves in the first place. The common decongestant, used most often as an ingredient in multidrug cold medications like DayQuil and Sudafed PE, was initially designated as “safe and effective” by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1976, when the agency was newly—and less stringently than today—greenlighting drugs that had been on the market for years before the agency had established any efficacy standards. After a full review of 14 studies (12 unpublished and two published) from pharmaceutical companies—...

The multifaceted role of mast cells in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis
Clin Exp Rheumatol. 2023 Sep 7. doi: 10.55563/clinexprheumatol/eontou. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMast cells (MC) are tissue duelling cells playing an active role in both innate and adaptive immune system. They act as first players in different microbial infections and exert a crucial role in allergy, chronic inflammation, fibrosis, and rheumatic diseases (RD), including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). MC are normally present in human synovia and they increase in the joints of RA patients, contributing to inflammatory and remodelling processes. Due to their great plasticity and multifunctionality, MC exert a wide range of ro...

Cow's milk-based infant formula supplements in breastfed infants and primary prevention of cow's milk allergy: A commentary of the Committee on Nutrition of the French Society of Pediatrics
Arch Pediatr. 2023 Sep 12:S0929-693X(23)00142-2. doi: 10.1016/j.arcped.2023.07.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe role of nutritional interventions for the primary prevention of cow's milk allergy (CMA) remains debated as well as the role of early introduction of allergenic foods, which is largely encouraged from the beginning of complementary feeding. Considering the introduction of cow's milk protein (CMP), current recommendations suggest avoidance of any cow's milk formula (CMF) supplements in breastfed infants in the maternity ward. By contrast, based on poor evidence, some authors support systematic supplements of...
