Occasional digestive hemorrhage in children due to strongyloidiasis: importance of parasitologic testing

Determinants of low measles vaccination coverage in children living in an endemic area
Conclusion: We reported inadequate measles immunization rate in Southern Italy, with lowest rates in children ≤ 2 years or with underlying conditions. Only a minority had true contraindications to vaccine uptake. Implementation strategies addressed to health-care professionals and families should focus on the reported determinants to increase measles vaccination coverage. What is Known:• Measles is a viral, highly communicable disease, preventable by vaccine.• Measles elimination in Europe failed as demonstrated by outbreaks in several countries, due to low immunization rates. What is New:• Inadequate measles immu...

Prevalence of Atopy following Mass Drug Administration with Albendazole: A Study in School Children on Flores Island, Indonesia
Conclusions: This study indicates that 1 year of MDA with albendazole was associated with a reduced prevalence of STH infections. This study shows that the prevalence of allergic sensitization increases after 1 year of albendazole treatment. Placebo-controlled and larger studies are needed to further substantiate a role of deworming treatment in an increased risk of allergic sensitization.Int Arch Allergy Immunol

Long-term effectiveness of one and two doses of a killed, bivalent, whole-cell oral cholera vaccine in Haiti: an extended case-control study
Publication date: September 2018Source: The Lancet Global Health, Volume 6, Issue 9Author(s): Molly F Franke, Ralph Ternier, J Gregory Jerome, Wilfredo R Matias, Jason B Harris, Louise C IversSummaryBackgroundNo study of long-term protection following killed oral cholera vaccination has been done outside of the historically cholera-endemic areas of south Asia, or has examined protection after a single-dose vaccination regimen. To address this, we examined the duration of protection of the standard two-dose regimen and an incomplete regimen of one dose up to 4 years after vaccination in Haiti.MethodsIn the setting of two-do...

Specific-IgE to galactose- α-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) has limited utility in diagnosing meat allergy in a tick-endemic population
Sensitization to galactose- α-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal) is considered a prerequisite to mammalian meat allergy (MMA) and can occur through tick bites, which is due to the paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, in Australia.1 The onset of symptoms is typically 3 to 6hours after ingestion of mammalian meat, but immediate reactions have been described.2

Development and Evaluation of a Novel ELISA for Detection of Antibodies against HTLV-I Using Chimeric Peptides.
Abstract We aimed to develope a peptide-based indirect ELISA to detect antibodies against Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I). Two chimeric peptides (CP-1 and CP-2) were designed using linear immunodominant epitopes of gp-46-I, and gp21-I proteins, according to the sequence from Uniprot database. These peptides were studied initially in the ELISA using infected sera. The most promising peptideCP-1, was used to develop a peptide ELISA for detection of HTLV-I infected sera. The optimal conditions for CP-1ELISA were: the optimum coating buffer was 100mM NaHCO3, pH 9.6; coating peptide concentration was 10 µg/...

Component ‐resolved diagnostics demonstrates that most peanut‐allergic individuals could potentially introduce tree nuts to their diet
Conclusions and clinical relevancePR‐10‐sensitizations were frequent and strong regardless of peanut allergy status. Component‐resolved diagnostics can be employed to demonstrate to patients that sensitization to seed storage proteins of tree nuts is uncommon. Several tree nuts could potentially be reintroduced to the diet.

Clinicoepidemiologic Features of Chronic Urticaria in Patients with versus without Subclinical < b > < i > Helicobacter pylori < /i > < /b > Infection: A Cross-Sectional Study of 150 Patients
Conclusion: A subset of chronic urticaria patients appears to have asymptomaticH. pylori infection. However, its implications in chronicity, recurrences, the severity of urticaria, other systemic manifestations, and management remains conjectural in view of 33% of controls also having positiveH. pylori ELISA and the endemicity of infection in developing countries.Int Arch Allergy Immunol

Susceptibility to mycobacterial disease due to mutations in IL-12R β1 in three Iranian patients
AbstractIn the last decade, autosomal recessive interleukin-12 receptor β1 (IL-12Rβ1) deficiency, the most common cause of Mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial disease (MSMD), has been diagnosed in a few children and adults with severe tuberculosis in Iran. Here, we report three cases referred to the Immunology, Asthma and Allergy ward at the National Research In stitute of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (NRITLD) at Masih Daneshvari Hospital from 2012 to 2017 with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacteria infections due to defects in IL-12Rβ1 but with different clinical manifestations. All three w...
