Vespa velutina nigrithorax venom allergy: inhibition studies approach for the choice of specific immunotherapy
Eur Ann Allergy Clin Immunol. 2022 Dec 13. doi: 10.23822/EurAnnACI.1764-1489.277. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVespa velutina nigrithorax (VVN), commonly known as Asian wasp because endemic in Asia, represents an alien species in Europe. VVN can induce allergic reactions similar to those caused by other Hymenoptera and deaths after VVN stings, presumably due to fatal allergic reactions, were reported. In the treatment of Hymenoptera venom hypersensitivity, specific immunotherapy (VIT) is highly effective, and the vaccine allergen-specificity plays a crucial role. Currently, there is no specific available VIT for VVN, so V...

Antibody weapon against malaria shows promise in Africa
A new way to prevent malaria that showed promise in 9 U.S. volunteers deliberately exposed to parasite-laden mosquitoes last year has now shown its mettle in a real-world situation in Africa. A study published today in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that a single dose of lab-produced monoclonal antibodies can protect recipients from infection for up to 6 months during Mali’s intense malaria season. Monoclonal antibodies are expensive to produce and can be cumbersome to administer if they are infused straight into the bloodstream. That makes some researchers skeptical that the new ones to thwa...

Egg allergy and yellow fever immunization: a safe desensitization plan
Yellow fever is a viral hemorrhagic disease with a high-mortality rate endemic to tropical regions of South America and sub-Saharan Africa. While the egg-derived yellow fever vaccine (YF-VAX, Sanofi Pasteur, USA) is safe and provides life-long protection, it can pose a challenge for egg-allergic patients living in or traveling to endemic areas.

Policy Implications of the Southern and Central Africa International Center of Excellence for Malaria Research: Ten Years of Malaria Control Impact Assessments in Hypo-, Meso-, and Holoendemic Transmission Zones in Zambia and Zimbabwe
Am J Trop Med Hyg. 2022 Oct 11;107(4_Suppl):68-74. doi: 10.4269/ajtmh.21-1288. Print 2022 Oct 11.ABSTRACTThe International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR) were established by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases more than a decade ago to provide multidisciplinary research support to malaria control programs worldwide, operating in endemic areas and contributing technology, expertise, and ultimately policy guidance for malaria control and elimination. The Southern and Central Africa ICEMR has conducted research across three main sites in Zambia and Zimbabwe that differ in ecology, ent...
