Is It Allergies, The Flu Or The Coronavirus? How To Tell The Difference
(CNN) — The coronavirus has infected more than 100,000 people worldwide. With all of the news of event cancellations, empty flights and health precautions (wash your hands!), it’s natural that people may get a little anxious every time they feel a tickle in their throat or the beginnings of a bad cough. While the coronavirus is certainly something to take seriously, the chances of any individual person getting it are still low. But if you’re wondering whether that stuffy nose could end up being a worst case scenario, CNN talked to Dr. Greg Poland, a professor of medicine and Infectious diseases at the May...

IJERPH, Vol. 17, Pages 177: The Dose of Fungal Aerosol Inhaled by Workers in a Waste-Sorting Plant in Poland: A Case Study
a Bioaerosol monitoring is a rapidly emerging area in the context of work environments because microbial pollution is a key element of indoor air pollution and plays an important role in certain infectious diseases and allergies. However, as yet, relatively little is known about inhaled doses of microorganisms in workplaces. Today, the important issue of social concern is due to waste management, transport, sorting, and processing of wastes and their environmental impact and effects on public health. In fact, waste management activities can have numerous adverse effects on human wellbeing. Health effects are generally ...

Systemic and environmental risk factors for recurrent aphthous stomatitis in a Polish cohort of patients.
Conclusions: The potential role of hypertension and anemia as modifiers of the immune reaction in RAS has been implied in this study but confirmation of this association requires further studies on a larger sample of patients. However, there appears to be no correlation between smoking and the occurrence of RAS. The positive family history observed in this study in the majority of RAS patients confirms the genetic background of the condition. PMID: 31320854 [PubMed]

Regional employment and individual worklessness during the Great Recession and the health of the working-age population: Cross-national analysis of 16 European countries
Publication date: Available online 25 June 2019Source: Social Science & MedicineAuthor(s): Claire L. Niedzwiedz, Katie H. Thomson, Clare Bambra, Jamie R. PearceAbstractStudies from single countries suggest that local labour market conditions, including rates of employment, tend to be associated with the health of the populations residing in those areas, even after adjustment for individual characteristics including employment status. The aim of this study is to strengthen the cross-national evidence base on the influence of regional employment levels and individual worklessness on health during the period of the Great Rece...

The Toxicological Analysis of Ni and Cr in Prescription Food for Special Medical Purposes and Modified Milk Products for Babies in Infancy Available in Pharmacies in Poland.
Abstract Prescription food for special medical purposes (FSMPs) and modified milk products (MMPs) for babies in the infancy period available in pharmacies are increasingly frequently used for newborns and infants-especially in cases where allergies and food-borne diseases are diagnosed. However, there is a lack of scientific study around the safety assessment of the elemental impurities in these products. Importantly, the allergen Ni and the problematic metal Cr are little considered. Hence, the aim of this article was the toxicological analysis of Ni and Cr impurities in prescription FSMPs (n = 6) and MMPs (n...

Vaccination Against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella in the Light of Current Epidemic Threats: Unjustified Postponement.
This study seeks to define the reason and justification for postponing MMR vaccination in a population of children referred to the outpatient specialist immunization clinic. One hundred and thirty eight (138) children, mean 24.5 ± 26.6 months, with a history of past allergies, in whom the first-time MMR vaccination was delayed by family doctors for fear of allergic reactions, were enrolled into the study. The mean delay in a vaccine shot was 12.3 ± 26.9 months. There were 101 children who displayed a distinct allergy to the egg proteins, among other accompanying types of allergy. All of the 138 children were found ...

Microbiological indoor air quality in an office building in Gliwice, Poland: analysis of the case study
This study aimed to characterize and compare the microbial air quality of air-conditioned (AC) and naturally ventilated (NV) office rooms in the Upper Silesia region of Poland. The bacterial samples were collected during the late spring season. Culturable bacteria were deposited on the nutrient media on Petri dishes to investigate the viable-culturable count (VCC) of bacteria and bacterial community structure using a Biolog GEN III system. In total, 12 species of bacteria were identified, with the most isolatedMacrococcus equipercicus,Micrococcus luteus D,Staphylococcus xylosus (indoor), andBacillus species (outdoor). The ...

This analysis is limited to the recurrence of dermatologic diseases in the hospitalized pediatric population within the Pomeranian region for the purpose of future targeted education. Retrospective analysis included 282 participants over a 3-year period between 20...

In Utero Exposure to Select Phenols and Phthalates and Respiratory Health in Five-Year-Old Boys: A Prospective Study
Conclusion: Ethyl-paraben, bisphenol A, 2,5-dichlorophenol, and DIDP tended to be associated with altered respiratory health, with ethyl-paraben and bisphenol A exhibiting some consistency across respiratory outcomes. The trends between bisphenol A pregnancy level and increased asthma and bronchiolitis/bronchitis rates in childhood were consistent with a previous cohort study. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP1015 Received: 25 August 2016 Revised: 12 January 2017 Accepted: 26 January 2017 Published: 08 September 2017 Address correspondence to C. Allergies in urban versus countryside settings in Poland as part of the Epidemiology of the Allergic Diseases in Poland (ECAP) study - challenge the early differential diagnosis.
CONCLUSIONS: Inhabitants of metropolitan areas are to a greater extent predisposed to allergic conditions. One factor significantly contributing to allergies is genetic predisposition. Given the scale of the problem, there is an urgent need to implement measures for early prevention and diagnosis of allergies to minimize distant health effects. PMID: 28182031 [PubMed - in process]

Polish and World spirometry days - Three years of research experience on causes and consequences of obstructive diseases in Poland
Conclusion: Screening tests (similar to those conducted during Spirometry Days) and promotion of appropriate knowledge are of great importance. They may increase awareness on chronic respiratory diseases and their relationship with smoking and quality of the environment Otherwise significant part of the Polish population will still be unknowingly living with obstructive disease.
