Motives and food craving: Associations with frequency of hyper-palatable food intake among college students
CONCLUSIONS: Results highlight the role of craving and coping motive in the frequency of HPF intake among college students. Prevention efforts may consider targeting craving and eating to cope to potentially address frequency of HPF intake among college students.PMID:37729846 | DOI:10.1016/j.eatbeh.2023.101814

Rural nutrition and dietetics research-Future directions
CONCLUSION: Establishing strong, collaborative place-based nutrition and dietetics research teams are necessary to combat the significant gaps in the scientific knowledge of solutions to improve nutrition in rural Australia. Further, dieticians and nutritionists who live in and understand the rural contexts are yet to be fully harnessed in research, and better engaging with these professionals will have the best chance of successfully addressing the nutrition-related disease disparity between rural and metropolitan Australia.PMID:37723938 | DOI:10.1111/ajr.13041

Effect of functional resistance training on the structure and function of the heart and liver in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver
Sci Rep. 2023 Sep 19;13(1):15475. doi: 10.1038/s41598-023-42687-w.ABSTRACTThe current study is of the quasi-experimental type, with a pre-and post-test design, and subjects were randomly assigned to one of two groups: control (n = 8) and experimental (test) (n = 8). Based on the patient's self-report and using daily diet control tables, the patient's diet planning percentage of energy supply was managed and controlled for 3 days. The protocol for functional resistance training for these circular exercises, including the squat, lunge, bear crawl, rock press, jumping jack, and back fly lunge, was performed three times per we...

The comparison of total energy and protein intake relative to estimated requirements in chronic spinal cord injury
Br J Nutr. 2023 Sep 20:1-30. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523002088. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn chronic spinal cord injury (SCI), individuals experience dietary inadequacies complicated by an understudied research area. Our objectives were to assess (1) the agreement between methods of estimating energy requirement (EER) and estimated energy intake (EEI) and (2) whether dietary protein intake met SCI-specific protein guidelines. Persons with chronic SCI (n=43) completed 3-day food records to assess EEI and dietary protein intake. EER was determined with the Long and Institute of Medicine (IOM) methods and the SCI-specific Fa...

Vegetarian diets and the risk of gastrointestinal cancers: a meta-analysis of observational studies
CONCLUSION: Adhering to vegetarian diets reduces the risk of gastrointestinal tumorigenesis. More data from well-conducted cohort and other studies are needed.PMID:37724454 | DOI:10.1097/MEG.0000000000002643

Effects of long-term consumption of two plant-based dietary supplements on cardiovascular health and low-grade inflammation in middle-aged and elderly people: study protocol for a randomised, controlled trial
This study will provide evidence whether long-term, plant-based dietary supplementation can support cardiovascular health, anti-inflammatory processes, immunity and nutritional status in ageing. Trial registration This trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04763291) on February 21, 2021.PMID:37726820 | DOI:10.1186/s41043-023-00434-x

Osteopontin-driven T-cell accumulation and function in adipose tissue and liver promoted insulin resistance and MAFLD
CONCLUSIONS: Current findings highlight a critical role of SPP1 in the initiation of obesity-driven chronic inflammation by regulating accumulation and/or polarization of T cells. Early targeting of SPP1 could be beneficial for IR and MAFLD treatment.PMID:37724058 | DOI:10.1002/oby.23868

The importance of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids as high-quality food in freshwater ecosystems with implications of global change
Biol Rev Camb Philos Soc. 2023 Sep 19. doi: 10.1111/brv.13017. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTraditionally, trophic ecology research on aquatic ecosystems has focused more on the quantity of dietary energy flow within food webs rather than food quality and its effects on organisms at various trophic levels. Recent studies emphasize that food quality is central to consumer growth and reproduction, and the importance of food quality for aquatic ecosystems has become increasingly well recognized. It is timely to synthesise these findings and identify potential future research directions. We conducted a systematic review of om...

The impact of calorie labelling and proportional pricing on out of home food orders: a randomised controlled trial study using a virtual food and drink delivery app
CONCLUSIONS: Calorie labelling on food delivery platforms may effectively reduce calories ordered. Proportional pricing may be useful in prompting consumers to select smaller portion sizes, although further research in real-world settings will now be valuable.PMID:37726788 | DOI:10.1186/s12966-023-01513-2

Is duration of residence a proxy for acculturation? The case of health risk behaviors among international immigrants
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that duration of residence should not be used as a proxy for acculturation when studying health risk behaviors among immigrants. Researchers should consider additional time-dependent factors to explain behavioral changes by duration of residence.PMID:37723980 | DOI:10.1177/14034948231199534

Selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase 1 regulates transcription of elongase 3 in murine tissues
This study explored underlying mechanisms of GPX1 in regulating tissue fatty acid (FA) biosynthesis. GPX1 OE, KO, and wild-type (WT) mice (n = 5, male, 3-6 months old) were fed a Se-adequate diet (0.3 mg/kg) and assayed for liver and adipose tissue FA profiles and mRNA levels of key enzymes of FA biosynthesis and redox-responsive transcriptional factors (TFs). These three genotypes of mice (n = 5) were injected intraperitoneally with diquat, ebselen, and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) at 10, 50, and 50 mg/kg of body weight, respectively, and killed at 0 and 12 h after the injections to detect mRNA levels of FA elongases and desatu...
